Not to worry, it's most likely just a post processing artifact used by Google at the request of the US Government to hide the sensitive military installations hidden in the shadows in that part of Oregon.

How did he find that secret submarine base in the first place??
Now, there will be a international incident as the US accuses Canada of leaking secrets via Canon rumors.

The sub is actually parked right behind OMSI and the portland opera. For reals yo.

And, oddly enough, no banding!

Actually, Leica is still very much involved in satellite imaging equipment.

Keep in mind...ONLY the Sony Exmor sensor has nearly read-noise-free images. Most other CMOS sensor designs still exhibit a lot more noise than an Exmor sensor. Many of those designs will exhibit pattern and banding noise like Canon sensors. Just because banding exists in a photo does not mean it was taken with a Canon camera...it just means it wasn't taken with a camera using an Exmor sensor.

Don't make the mistake of assuming Sony's advancements in sensor fabrication mean ALL sensor manufacturers EXCEPT Canon are just as good. Its the exact opposite. Only Sony is that good, and all other sensor manufacturers (for consumer grade devices, anyway) are worse to one degree or another.

Ok, this is NOT a Canon sucks post. I love my Canon stuff. But I was on google maps, and I saw something very familiar to me.... Banding in the shadows on the satellite images! To the best of my knowledge, this is fairly exclusive to Canon. So yeah. If million dollar satellite cameras  have banding noise in their shadows, do we have any hope of our lowly little cameras ever breaking free from this curse?

And the other take-away from that link is the rumors section mentioning the D4x at 54 MP, right where I'd expect it to be, 2.25x the D3200's sensor.

When that comes out we can start a whole new round of, uhm, sophisticated deliberation when its merits are measured by DxO and published against whatever Canon will have to compare to it.

Oh my God. I would hate to shoot 54mp. The difference from 22 to 36 in print is small, but the file size increase is huge. I would imagine the jump from 36 to 54 to be a nightmare to post process, with only a coupe inches gained in print size. So not worth it. Just my two cents.

The way the 5D2 kit is selling (and get them while you can) I'd go for one of those. Get your body and sweet glass all at the same time. Have you considered the CLP?

CLP is a sweat deal and I'd have no problem getting one through them, however as capable as I know the 5D2 is, I'm just hung up on the idea of buying a 2008 camera, just like I'd hate to buy a 2008 car when I can have a 2012.... retail it doesn't make alot of sense however if I can't wait CLP is a great way to make it happen have save lots of money.

I don't know about you, but I would go for the 2008 car. Buying new is the best way to lose money. Especially if the 2008 model does everything you need and has just as smooth a ride.

Why do you think this was addressed earlier than the 5d mark III, despite the 5d being released "long" before the 1dx?

The simple answer would be: The 1dx costs more. "Professionals" demand it. etc.

But I don't think there are too many amateurs running around out there with $3000 bodies.

I was relatively unconcerned with the large amount of discontent with the 5d mark iii preformance, personally feeling that the camera fit its role.

I am, however; utterly pissed that Canon chose to overlook the fact that there are thousands of 5d mk3 users out there that have demanded, more or less, that the AF in AI Servo be changed through a simple firmware update, and instead, offer it to the 1dx that has been out for a fraction of the time.

I love Canon, but this really irks me, maybe unjustifiably, but irks me none the less, and where better to rant than cr?

Grrrrr.

I'm sure canon will get around to the 5d3 eventually. Hopefully.

Or not. Force us to upgrade to the 1dx. Make more money. You know, canon's usual. Or should I say, a sane company's usual.

Not sure if anyone else has said it, but the "reach" of the 7d vs a 5d3 is BS. Crop into the 5d3 frame and it will still be sharper than the 7d. I did lots of testing myself to confirm this. The only time I touch my 7d is as a backup. Go for that glorious 5d3 and you will love it.

based on your suggestion, i wonder:

1. why buy telephoto while i can crop, and
2. should i sell my 5d iii to buy nikon d800 since its sharpness will maintains much better than 5d iii after cropping due to its resolution...

yes, i still have my 7d (will keep it as back up) and 30d (will keep it for experiment purposes).  everyone has his/her own philosophy about utilizing his/her camera right?

Huh? I assume you are being sarcastic? Longer lenses are always better than cropping. Unless, of course, the lens is just really really bad.

For any given lens, a 5d3 gives such a better image than a 7d that even with it cropped down to the same field of view as the 7d, then unscaled to 18mp, it can look just as good, if not better than the 7d.

And no, I don't think the d800 would be nearly as good. Canon lenses are awesome.

They already illuminate in One Shot (provided you've enabled the setting to do so, the default is to only illuminate when the camera thinks it's dark enough to need it, but you can have them light every time with a setting change).  The issue at hand was that the point in use doesn't illuminate in AI Servo on the 1D X, as it did on previous 1-series bodies (but not on the 7D).

No, I'm saying both the 1D X and the 5DIII can light up when focus is achieved (not at the start of AF, but at the end), provided the VF Display Illumination setting (AF5 menu) is set accordingly.

Update #2

After playing with the files, including upscaling the 1dx to the 5d3 and d800 resolutions, I've concluded that there isn't a TON of difference. Yes, the d800e is sharper at 100% at 36mp, but the 1dx seems to take sharpening much better.  1dx raw vs jpeg is night and day difference too. Amazing, but that is to be expected.

As for print sizes, ive calculated that the:
1dx = 18x12 at 300dpi
5d3 = 19x13 at 300dpi
d800 = 25x16 at 300dpi
(numbers are rounded)

SO that bump in resolution from 1dx to 5d3 is basically nothing. one inch in print. Up to the d800 seems like a fairly substantial increase in size, but again, not a HUGE difference.

See below for a comparison of 1dx upscaled to d800e resolution, to compare sharpness. From RAW

The d800e has been sharpened, but the 1dx received more.
