EOS Bodies - For Stills / Dual Card-Slot Workflow?
« on: June 11, 2012, 05:46:56 PM »
The 5Diii is my first camera with dual card slots, and I'm trying to figure out my work flow.  Here's my thought process:

I'll record jpegs on one card and RAW on another for my "everyday shooting."  That way I can upload my jpegs into Lightroom 4 and keep my snapshots with minimal storage usage, and then pull out the few that I'd want to really process and potentially enlarge, and then grab those RAW files.

Questions: If this workflow makes sense, do you recommend CF vs SD for RAW (and how about for video, SD or CF?)?  Does Lightroom 4 have a way to convert the original RAW files to jpeg rather than just exporting and making duplicates so that I could only shoot RAW and then just easily convert my snapshots to jpeg for storage purposes?

(CF - SanDisk Extreme, 16GBs, 60MB/s  ////  SD - Trascend 32GB, class 10)

Does this even make sense?

We should make it a bit more interesting. No insurance + you only have 2 grand to spend.

5DmII refurbished, 50 1.4 refurbished.  Probably would help me improve as a photographer more than anything else I could put together, and force me to see as I learned with the AE-1 back in middle school.

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Huge SanDisk Sale at B&H
« on: May 20, 2012, 12:58:25 AM »
The benefit from a super fast card comes when your buffer is full due to fast FPS shooting, or faster downloading to your computer, assuming you have a super fast card reader to match.

Unless you are doing that, a inexpensive Sandisk 60 mb/sec CF card is overkill, but a good middle of the road choice.  In another year or even this next Christmas, prices for those super high speed cards will drop as a newer and faster one arrives on the market.

Awesome, that's what I needed to hear.  Can't imagine I'll be shooting at 6FPS too often to make the difference worth the money right now.

Watch out, those SDXC UHS-1 cards do not work in UHS-1 mode for Current Canon cameras, so it might sound like a good deal for a fast card, however, it will not be nearly that fast in your camera, so you are wasting money.

Am sure I could find my answer, but wondering if this'll come back quickly.  Looking to buy my first CF card for my upgrade to a 5DM3.  Suggestions for a primarily photo but sometimes video shooter?

Lenses / Re: 70-200: 2.8L vs 4L IS?
« on: May 18, 2012, 12:14:23 AM »
This has been really helpful; thank you all.  The typo at the top is that I currently have the 4L (non IS).  With some of the comments about sharpness, I'm thinking the 4L IS is the upgrade of choice.  I don't shoot indoor sports, and while low light is one of my favorite times to shoot, I'd rather have a faster prime for those occasions.

Gotta love the Canon refurb store...

Lenses / 70-200: 2.8L vs 4L IS?
« on: May 17, 2012, 03:48:53 PM »
Refurbished, the 70-200 2.8L costs almost exactly the same as the 70-200 4L IS.  I currently have the 70-200 on a 550D body, and am expecting to go FF and am interested in upgrading this lens to improve IQ.  Don't have the extra grand to get the 2.8L IS.  Any opinions on IQ, build quality, handling, etc.?

Software & Accessories / Best site for renting underwater housing?
« on: May 09, 2012, 11:49:08 AM »
Heyo,

Headed to Belize this summer and am considering renting some underwater housing for my camera.  Model of body is inconsequential as I may be upgrading or renting a body, I'm just looking for price.

Anyone had any luck with this in the past?

Cheers

Lens?  Seems like it must have been a fisheye....  Looks absolutely fantastic, I'd buy that poster.

So "refresh" button is the way to go.  Most worth-while lenses are out of stuck right now, so I guess I'll just have to keep an eye out...

It's in the title, but I'm just wondering if any of you wonderful people know what kind of schedule Canon is on when they update their refurbished section of the Direct Store?  And, is it possible to set up your account so that you are emailed/notified if a certain item comes in?  I have a "Wish List" set up but I couldn't find any way to have it contact me...

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Sorry 5D3, Insufficient Value
« on: April 20, 2012, 11:40:40 PM »
I've been an amateur photographer for a while, graduated from college, paid off my loans, and now have some expendable income.  As a T2i shooter, I've had FF envy for a long while and am finally ready to bite the bullet.  35 hundo is a big bullet to bite, agreed.  And the jump from models was disappointing.  But investing in 4-year old technology (argue what you want about Canon's "old" and "new," but consumer understanding is what's important) doesn't make sense to me.  If you bought a 5DII in 2008 for $2500, and are selling it now for $1900, that's 4 years for $600.  If I sell the 5DIII in 3 years for $3,000, that's the best rental price I can find.  5DII probably won't be worth much in 3 years...

So that's my logic.

EOS Bodies / Re: I just bought a 5dmk2 new. was it a good buy?
« on: April 19, 2012, 03:43:06 PM »
Obviously we never know what exactly Canon (or other imaging companies) will do next, but from what I've read it is VERY unlikely that Canon will offer a full frame lower than the 5DMII price.  If anything they will update that $2,500 price point with a camera very similar to the MII (maybe just an updated sensor) and keep the bells and whistles on the MIII.  That's my guess, and who knows if/when that'll even happen.
