I used a very geeky option for a recent two week long RV trip: a Raspberry Pi.

Pi $35
Pi Case $6
Travel WiFi Hotspot $20 (I liked it better than the $10 wifi dongle.)
Powered USB HUB $15

SD Card for the Pi's OS - Lying Around
USB Hard Drive - Lying Around
CF/SD to USB card reader - Lying Around

It worked well.  I installed a VNC server on the Pi and then used either my Nexus pad or iPhone to log into the Pi via VNC client to kick off an rsync script to backup the various cards from the cameras.   

I tried gphoto2 to directly read off the camera but liked the external reader better as I could just use rsync to manage incremental copies.

I also used the Pi as a media server to the various devices in the RV which is did well too.

Mounted on a 7D - an Access P-MC "macro" 28-70mm f2.8-4.2 FD mount.  It was $10 or $15 from ebay with a Hoya CPF I was mostly after.  I figure the FD to EOS mount acts like a small extension tube.  Yes, there was some PP involved for saturation.

My first suggestion would be a monopod - it doubles as a club for when you get out of line. A $1 alternative is one of these .... $1 Image Stabilizer For Any Camera - Lose The Tripod/Monopod[/url] - I find this works quite well. ...

+1 to the monopod and +1 and an "I'm going to make one of those" for the $1 alternative.  (I'll do a lashing too since since I'm an Eagle Scout as well.)

One more test for fun comparing the SD card via CF adapter in the 7D with the same SD Card installed natively in my wife's t4i.   It just proves the 7D has a much deeper buffer.

I was curious about my own set of cards so ran a test using my 7D with Firmware 2.0.3.  I formatted the cards in-camera first, and then shot a 20 second burst of raw files in manual-focus, 1/200 exposure against a still-life.  I timed the result till the write-light turned off.   It was fairly impressive what the old 4GB cards could do.

The last entry is an SD to CF adapter I have for emergencies when traveling - knowing any Walmart or Target will have SD cards.

The burst figures there are for a 30s burst of RAW+JPEG instead of a 20s burst like Neuro.  The older cards perform worse than in Neuro's test which may be a difference in RAW+JPEG or, my guess, that Rob's tests were with the old firmware and the improved burst capability of the Ver 2.0 firmware is much more significant on an older card.

The quote from the firmware announcement: "These improvements include a higher maximum burst rate (130* for JPEG Large/Fine and 25* RAW images) for continuous shooting".

+1  The NAPP site is a member area but good.   I would recommend it if you decide to buy-CS6/subscribe-to-CC.

Bags are pretty personal.

I have a half dozen bags and mostly switch between a satchel for my medium-sized kit (Crumpler 6-Million Dollar Home) and a backpack (Lowepro Primus AW) when I want more stuff with me.   

If you already have a non-photo backpack or satchel that you love, search for a "camera bag insert" like the "Timbuk2 Snoop".  The stealth factor for an insert is much higher than most camera bags.
