EOS Bodies / Re: How excited are you about the new 7D II?
« on: September 16, 2014, 02:47:28 AM »
The 7D2 looks like a perfect camera for serious amateur sports/wildlife photographers who cannot afford the 1DX.  Some will complain about the sensor's quality being short of current Sonikon's, but it's unreasonable to expect the 7D line to get the technology upgrade before the 5D and 1D lines.

Speaking of speakers, so to speak...

Consumers Union (publisher of Consumer Reports) lost a major case in the U.S. Supreme Court when sued by Bose. The speaker manufacturer didn't care for the review and showed CR to be full of shirt.

In case no one is interested....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bose_Corp._v._Consumers_Union_of_United_States,_Inc.

Actually, Consumer Union won by 6-3 at the US Supreme Court:

"Bose Corp. v. Consumers Union of United States, Inc., 466 U.S. 485 (1984), was a product disparagement case ultimately decided by the Supreme Court of the United States. The Court found, on a 6-3 vote, in favor of Consumers Union, the publisher of Consumer Reports magazine, ruling that proof of "actual malice" was necessary in product disparagement cases raising First Amendment issues, as set out by the case of New York Times Co. v. Sullivan. The Court ruled that the First Circuit Court of Appeals had correctly concluded that Bose had not presented proof of actual malice."

Canon General / Re: Another Canon Medium Format Mention
« on: August 11, 2014, 05:42:04 PM »
Just don't believe it. If they are looking at MF now they're about twenty five years too late.

My thoughts exactly.

Developing a medium format camera today is way more complicated than it was in the film days and the market is much smaller and shrinking all the time. If Canon and Nikon were uninterested in medium format when it was actually a viable market, why would they invest in it now?

On another thread, I posted a reference to an estimate from Leica that the worldwide market for medium format is only 6,000 units annually. Hasselblad has a grand total of 180 employees according to their own website, not exactly a huge operation.

There are other markets that are far more promising.

To paraphrase an ancient proverb: “The best time to develop a MF camera was 25 years ago. The second best time is now.”

I'll go out on the proverbial limb here and recommend the Panasonic Lumix FZ200 bridge camera, which I own. It has an equivalent 25-600/2.8 constant aperture zoom and provides plenty of IQ for situations like this. And ... no one would ever think you were a "professional" with this camera!

Please do not repeat dishonest Panasonic marketing crap: at equivalent 25-600mm, it is f/16, NOT f/2.8

I used my just released 7D2 with the pre-production 100-400 II at the World Cup championship game in Russia as the US team bested Brazil 3-0.  Then, I traveled back in time to post this.

No doubt the source must have said "Fiscal Year of the Lens," but CR guy got too excited and only heard Year of the Lens.

I think, at this point, I and probably others, would like to hear from the Original Poster.  We've heard passionate answers with supporting claims and counter arguments.  Is the OP satisfied with the answers and with which explanations does he agree?  I learned a lot and big thanks to CR members for the education.

Thank you, CanonRumors.  I've been looking for the 430EX II flash and the price was great.

I enjoy both zooms and primes. But to say an improved 100-400 will make the 400 prime effectively replaced, well there are many prime tele shooters (BIRDERS!) who will have a field day with that comment. I think they both have their place.

Now, which will I get?

That my friend is the real conundrum.
Rent them both :)

I tried but Roger said he didn't have any Unicorns farting rainbows.
See if he has any beachfront property in Memphis ;D

Which Memphis?  The new one in Tennessee or the original Memphis in Egypt.  I have some spare bitcoin rattling in my pocket.

EOS Bodies / Re: 7D shutter count
« on: December 12, 2013, 12:40:21 PM »
I tried a few resources yesterday and I couldn't find a program or website that would give me the sitter count on a 7d.  I have used astro jargon before, but alas, not compatible with the 7d.

Anyone want to point me in the right direction?
I have Macs at home, and this one worked fine for my 7D:

Canon Shutter Actuation App for Mac

Plenty of others out there if you Google for "Canon EOS Shutter Count".
Thanks.  I'll give it a look when I get home.  I only have Windows, but hopefully I'll find something

It takes a bit of work but, for Windows, try this: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1058019

I suppose my thing is pronouns; They're such simple things that I can't understand why people get them wrong - that drives me crazy!

Jim

Using uppercase after a semi-colon may also drive some people crazy.

Canon General / Re: Priest meltdown over photographer at wedding. Ouch!! :O
« on: September 30, 2013, 02:01:19 PM »

I read one quote someone made on YouTube that I agreed with.  The groom should have leaned into the priests ear and said something like "I'm paying the photographers much like I'm paying you, please continue. And..if you do walk out, I'll sue your ass off, now, please get back to marrying us..."

cayenne

I totally disagree with this.  So, the groom would add his meltdown to the officiant's over-reaction?  You have not seen anything yet until the bride breaks down when the officiant walks away.
