maybe the editing cause the soft look? the filters being used to achieved post process look may caused images to soften.

Lenses / Re: Thinking about a 17-40 f4L USM. Thoughts?
« on: November 02, 2012, 11:01:17 PM »
The 17-40 is a fantastic lens. Like everyone else mentioned very sharp at f8 and up. In terms of image quality i would rate it par to my 135 f2, even sometimes sharper. but i have to disagree with the build quality. and this is the main reason why I think it cost lesser than other L lenses.

my camera was attached to 17-40 on a tripod and it accidentally fell onto a rock (distance from camera fall to rock about 5 feet)  resulting in a broken camera's lcd and due to impact my lens rear mount was also broken. In my opinion, due to that impact with any solid build lens, the rear mount should not break. Unfortunately the 17-40 lens did not stand the impact. So i gave it a 5/10 for built quality. I would not judge a lens' built quality by the looks and feels, until you actually experience the impact or any unwanted damages to it.

EOS Bodies / Re: One friend want to Buy my 24-70L... but...

the 135 is nice for outdoor but indoor especially wedding might not be a good idea if you were to only use prime. Space is an issue with 135 for indoor. if i were you just keep the 24-70, you need flexibility.

Good to hear. My experience with the work they did at the Mumbai CCC was not good. I have sent my 100-400 lens back. Hope it gets fixed next week... The focus ring is jamming :(

Sorry to hear that rpt, hope it gets fix soon...:)

When I first bought my camera 5d mark 3, I noticed an over exposed vertical band on left side of image, so I sent it in for repair at customer service centre in Mississauga. Since it is still under warranty, they replaced the new sensor and updated the firmware. It only took 3 business days to completed the repair! I just need to only showed them my receipt.

On Thanksgiving holiday I went out for photo shoot and my camera accidentally fell onto a rock; resulting a broken lcd and some scratched marks. Due to the impact, the lens also resulting a broken rear mount. So i dropped it off for repair at same location without hesitation because I knew they would do a great job like the first time I sent it in.

The following hour, I mean literately the next hour after I dropped my camera and lens in, I received an email for an estimate of the repairs. I was like wow! so fast. That night I made the transaction online for the repairs. The next day, I checked the repair status online and found out my camera has been completed! and my lens completed the following day.  I am just beyond words how fast the service was.

That's not all, there's more great news to it. When I picked up my camera and lens, I notice the scratched marks has been fixed without any additional charges, sensor cleaned, firmware updated, rear camera lcd, top lcd, shutter released button, all covered with protected sticker. I am just overwhelmed and excited with the great services I getting at Canon Canada, the completed repair shows how the technician put a lot  meticulous care and efforts into. The overall cost of repairs is not even that expensive.

I don't work for Canon or neither CPS member, I just wanted to shout out my great experiences. If any of you hesitated to send your gear in for repair at canon due to cost or whatever it is, please don't hesitate anymore, just do it! I will certainly guaranteed you will be very satisfied. They will take great care of your gears and turn-around time for repair is lighting fast. I don't know about USA Canon, cant comment on that.

EOS Bodies / Need advices, white line across photos...5D3
« on: September 06, 2012, 11:28:17 PM »
I bought my 5d3 brand new, never brought it in for service but thinking about it... before i do,
can i get your advices to why my photos turned out the way it did?

I notice the white line across my photo on the left side going vertically, happens on all
photos on the same spot. btw, the sensor never been cleaned before.

white line appears:
- with my other lens also
- regardless of shutter speed fast or long.
- more noticable when i darken the image (adding contrast, b&w etc..)
- more noticeable when bracketed photos merged into hdr as one photo
- with and without clear mrc filter

I have provided some samples for you to diagnose the problems. each samples with "normal" photo and
with "darken" intentionally for this purpose so you can the line more clearly as to what i am trying to explain. On "normal" photo, white line still appear but  less noticeably.

if solutions can be fixed without having to bring it in for service, that would be greatly appreciated.
just don't like to wait or the fear of more problems could persist after bringing in for service due to dissembled/reassembled of parts.

Lenses / Why pick 16-35 f2.8 over 17-40 f4
« on: August 23, 2012, 10:44:27 PM »
I have a 17-40 f4 on my 5d3 and i truly love this lens, little bit of corner softness but other than i love it.

I always have it on my tripod when shooting landscape, i don't shoot portrait with this lens- exclusively for landscape, i must say it is worth every penny but i have never used the 16-35 f2.8 and curious of the performance, i wanted to know in which ways it is better than the 17-40 and is it worth paying double the price?

If anyone of you used 16-35 or have both lenses that can share some of your experiences and benefits of have 16-35 over 17-40 aside from aperture because i always have it on f8-f11.

many thanks

I found this great waterfalls in Hamilton. The city of hamilton has over 100 falls, the most well known falls in hamilton is the photo i taken below called albion falls with my 5d3 17-40 f/4 lens at iso 100, f11 with Lee big stopper.

Portrait / Re: My photos look so dull
« on: August 22, 2012, 11:37:18 PM »
it's definitely "post process" look you need, it's not your camera or lens. took me about 10 mins to edit your photo, i removed the blemishes, add contrast, little of saturation and using the levels to add more brightness.

Are you CPS at all?

If you are CPS, send it in.  If not, then let your budget decide.

What about  1 year manufacture warranty?

EOS Bodies / Re: Shooting leveled landscape pictures
« on: August 22, 2012, 10:48:00 PM »
i wouldn't worry to much about leveling, it's taking your time away from the importance of composition and capturing the moment rather than trying to level the camera while opportunity just passes by. Use your visual and judgement to tell if it's level or not. you can always fix it in post.

Tnank you fallenflower and M.ST.

I think I know how to do now.
I've disabled the HDR and Multi Exposure-things in the "quickmenu".

Now I have "5" "number of bracketed shots" in the "C.Fn1:Exposure"-menu enabled.

Then I had to go to "Expo.comp./AEB" option under "SHOOT2" (the second red menu) and set the 5 exposures (-2,-1,0,+1,+2) with the dial and "set" it.

When I try to take pictures now it is 5 pictures that I take when I do a "shoot". I've set the cameras mode to the fastest shootmode "H" and when I hold the button on the remote it fast takes these 5 shots and then stops. If I press and hold the button again it takes another 5 pictures.

Just like I want it!

My following question:
Is there any way that I can "change" the exposures with buttons/wheels on the camera and not in the menu? I can change the +/- from where I starts.. like I want it to start at -1 and then it changes to "-3,-2,-1,0,+1"..
I think that I've seen (and done this before?) that I can with the wheels change both the exposuresteps (like ½ steps between) and then all the way to "0" to disable the bracketing? Like holding a button and scrolling a wheel and not have to navigate to the menu.

Best regards.
Fredrik

yes you can Fredrik, and this is the reason why i like using canon, taken photos just been more easier.

Instead of navigating through to menu, on the shooting settings display (to access this display click on the info button until you see it) press the q button to enable quick control of the shooting settings. You will see settable functions on quick control screen, select the exposure compensation/aeb setting and move the main dial left or right to change the aeb range and move the quick control dial to change the exposure compensation.

note. if you would like to change the bracketing sequence from "default 0,-,+" to "-,0,+"(my favorite sequence) go to menu under c.fn1;exposure select bracketing sequence and choose your desire sequence. This you would have to navigate through menu, and should not be change often.

if i have not answered your questions, or you are not clear with something, write back and i will try my best to help you out.

i had the same question as you when i first purchased the camera and worked my ways around it and finally figured it out, its pretty easy. follow the simple instructions below. instructions are based on factory settings.

i like to use aperture priority mode, so we'll stick with that for the sake of this instructions.
1.disable incamera hdr
2.multiple exposure also disable
1&2 might work if you have it enable, but i like it to be disable.
Instruction #3 is the magic answer to your question.
3. change your exposure comp./aeb settings- turn main dial to the right to set the aeb range (eg. -2,-1,0,+1,+2) and turn the quick control dial to change the exposure compensation for me i leave it at default i dont change the exposure comp.
4. select your drive mode to self-timer:2sec/remote- for that mode you can use your release cable if wish, but for me i like the 2sec timer.

that's it!

to change from 3 brackets to 2, 5, or 7 go to menu, under c.fn1:exposure select number of bracketed shots, then change to your desire.

i like to keep it at 5, 3 is also good and 7 is for under extreme light, especially shooting at the sun or where lots of shadows.

The camera will do the rest, it will automatically take 2,3,5 or 7 photos (depending on your settings)
