Lenses / Re: Lens Fungus - Advice Needed
« on: December 03, 2014, 01:58:05 PM »
A while back tried to sell my daughters 450d and kit lens to a uk shop ( daughter inherited my much loved 550D and 15-85 combo, after I upgraded to a 5D3) the shop examined the lens, said it had traces of fungus, so where not interested in the lens or body (the spores easily spread between lens, camera, and any other lens used. Glad I never let her use any of my new lenses. The kit that she bought second hand  at university was a Kiss version of the 450d, so probably originated from a humid climate, lens was dumped, body sold with a lens I wanted rid of to another uk retailer for near on peanuts.

Went for a three hour walk with my 5d3, new 70-200 f2.8 IS mk2 attached to a new BR7 curve and my Border Terrier, Watson in tow. Love the BR method of carrying this combo, one hand on the lens for peace of mind most of the time, do not feel the weight compared to the neckstrap ( I have the lens pointed forward, but it often wants to sit to the rear after taking shots, then I adjust it, what would most recommend lens or body in front?) my only concern is on getting back to the car I noticed the lockstar had become open! so this is another weak link! I will be paranoid about using this strap until I implement the  safety methods mentioned by others in this post.

Just received a BR7 tried it on my 5D3, yes it works fine but I had reservations. Glad I remembered this post! My main concern (and why I have responded to a oldish post ) is that there is no information in the box re the lockstar) It was in the box but I nearly ignored it, not knowing its` purpose. I will be fitting further fail safe straps as suggested by others here. One question for those who use Loctite on the threads, can you ever remove the thread if required ?

Lenses / 70-200 f2.8 IS mk 2 with 2x extender
« on: October 16, 2014, 05:05:14 PM »
Just received my 70-200 today, to late to really test it as have been so busy, just know it works and focuses fast. A couple of questions, firstly is it any good with the 2x extender ( I have searched, this forum and others, Arthur Morris, birds as art on FM gets brilliant images with this combo ) others say the 100-400 (which I have) or similar gives better results. I also have the 1.4 mk3 extender and reviews say it performs well with the 70-200 f2.8 IS mk2. Second question, is there a strap that is capable of carrying this lens on a 5D3,either to my side or across my back ( as I saw a Nikon user recently using, though with a lighter lens, bigger camera) My usual method of carrying the 100-400 is to hold the lens as I am walking, I do not find this awkward most of the time but if walking with my dog it can be a problem.

Agree with ahsanford`s method, only things I can add are to set WB manually before inserting BS, (one colour cast is enough to remove) daylight seems to work best and do cover the OV, blue tack or a piece of electrical tape will do the job.

I already had  a 430exII, so decided to go down the route of two Phottix Odin radio recievers and an on camera trigger, I have since acquired a Phottix Mitros flash (similar spec to the Canon 580) The receivers and triggers were £300 the flash £200 ( a mint demo unit ) they all work flawlessly.

I have a Cokin P series CPL filter along with ND grads for skies, CPL filters are best used at 90 degrees to the sun, (do not have the sun in front  or behind you) or they give little to no effect. Cokins are OK but eventually I intend to switch to Lee filters.

Software & Accessories / Re: What size RAW should I shoot at?

Shoot full RAW, the camera shoots at full RAW then downsizes to medium or small, wasting proccesing time.

I have the 24-105 with the same cokin single holder, no vignetting that I can notice, even is there is a little it can be corrected in post.

Thanks so far, I do have the wide angle holder and it is nice to know it should be OK down to 17mm, only used it on my 24-105 till now.

Lenses / 16-35 maybe 17-40
« on: March 09, 2013, 02:07:07 PM »
I am considering one or the other mainly for landscapes, but it could be nice to have  f2.8 for the occasional indoor scene, there is a Canon cashback offer in the UK on the 16-35, still more than I would like to pay, but I have learnt in photography you have to pay for quality gear, my other concern is do these lenses vignette at wide angle especially with filters ( Cokin p system ) I would be prepared to upgrade filters over time.

Yes, some not bad insect in flight shots, but cast a look at these, http://www.pbase.com/carlogalliani/insects_in_flight, not mine but would love them to be. also if you love macro look here  http://www.dgrin.com/forumdisplay.php?f=23 You will need to go to carlos macro section and look for insects in flight.
