EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Confusion about Macro Photography
« on: April 16, 2013, 11:08:16 AM »
As I remember, the terms macro and micro photography go back to the days of film cameras.  If the close up photographed image of a subject was, on film, the same size as, or smaller than the actual image itself, then it was called macro photography.  In other words, if you took a close up image of an ant and the image size on film was the same size as the ant or smaller than the ant then it was referred to as macro photography.

If, on the other hand,  you took a close up picture of a grain of sand and the lens in use rendered an image size on film that was larger than the actual subject, then it was called micro photography.

Do I remember this correctly?  Don't know how these terms might relate to macro and micro economics.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 1DX Does not wake up

When your 1DX does not wake up, is the vertical grip on/off switch in the "on" position?  Just wondering because sometime when I have the vertical grip switch "on" my 1DX will do strange things such as the main dial quits working.  I turn the vertical grip switch off and the main dial begins to work just fine.  Turn the vertical grip switch back "on" and main dial still works.  This just occurs occasionally.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Advice for Vacation to Belize

It is easy to schedule and insure your equipment under your homeowner's policy.  Just call your agent.  When equipment is scheduled you usually have coverage for just about any loss.  I'm sure your agent will be happy to explain the exact coverage.  (My agent told me that I was covered even if I were to accidentally drop my equipment over the side of our cruise ship.)  Coverage under your homeowner's policy is usually reasonable.  Also, after you get back home if you think you no longer need the coverage you can always cancel.

Belize is a beautiful place but, as you can imagine, ranges from plush, exotic resorts to rural areas of profound poverty.  When I was there, no one in our group had any problems with crime but as always remain alert and careful.

Have a great trip.  The Mayan ruins are worth the trip.

When I need a battery pack I use a Pixel TD-381 which I purchased from Amazon.  Had no problems.  Probably not as sturdy as the Canon CP-E4 but about $100 cheaper.

If you are having trouble moving Lightroom 3 to a new computer you might try going over to the Adobe Lightroom forum and ask for help.  Many of the posters know their stuff and enjoy helping others.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS-1D X Firmware 1.1.1 Now Available

I think I remember several months ago Canon saying when this fix was released that it would not make everyone happy.  True statement however I believe it is better than nothing.  The flashing will take some getting use to.

Software & Accessories / Delkin memory cards
« on: August 29, 2012, 12:04:57 PM »
Are Delkin memory cards the only UDMA 7 CF's manufactured in the USA?  They are certainly more expensive than SanDisk and Lexar (especially if one or the other is on sale).  Just wondering if they are worth the price difference?

B&H quotes the price of a Delkin 32 GB UDMA 7 1000X at $199.99.  A comparable Lexar is on sale for $132.24.

Thanks for the help.  Just a little over cautious I guess.

Sorry to keep asking questions but I really would hate to mess this up.

If Canon says the file is 33.04 MB then that should calculate to 33,812,480 bytes (33.04 X 1024).  The extracted FIR file that I have downloaded is 32,988,060 bytes according to the "properties" function.

I confess I am not a computer person but it sounds like my file is not complete.  Any help appreciated.

Mine says 33 MB on disk (32,988,060 bytes).  You're fine, just go for it.

BTW, your math is wrong, you need two factors of 1024: bytes to kilobytes then kilobytes to megabytes (meaning 32,988,060 bytes = 31.46 MB), but also hard drives have a minimum block size that means files take up more room than their actual size, and that minimum block size increases with larger drives, and is dependent on the OS.

1MB = 1024 bytes

Before I install this firmware update I thought that I had better ask for a little help.

If I am reading the Canon web site correctly the FIR file should be 33.02 MB once expanded.  However, when I download the file, expand and then right click to properties I show the downloaded file to be 32,988,060 bytes.  I have downloaded and expanded the file two times and get the same 32,988,060 bytes on both downloads but the apparent difference caused a little concern.

When in doubt ask for help.  Do I have the full file for updating?  Want to be sure before attempting to install on the camera.

EOS Bodies / Re: 1dX dust in viewfinder
« on: August 19, 2012, 09:35:44 AM »
I read somewhere on the Internet that you really need to be careful and turn your camera off before changing lens to help prevent dust on the focus screen.  The reasoning, as I remember, was that when the camera is on that there is a small electrical charge on the screen that attracts dust.

Anyone know if this is truth or fiction? I try to always make sure mine is off before swapping lens but from time to time will get in a hurry and forget.

Wycmfdm -- I live in a small town in the southeast and there is not a qualified Canon service facility within a hundred miles.  For that reason I send all my service work to the Canon factory service center in New Jersey.  With second day air service from UPS it really makes no difference where you live.  Using second day air service I can usually have the camera back in my hands in about a week.

You can go to the Canon web site for more information on service and repairs.

EOS Bodies / Autofocus guide
« on: August 16, 2012, 08:56:07 PM »
Does Canon offer a printed and bound version of the revised autofocus guide linked above or is it just available in PDF?

Sure would like to have a printed and bound version to keep in my bag along with the camera owners manual.

Is there a way to register an AF point, keep it registered and then turn off the visual reminder in the viewfinder?
