Doesn't apply to you, but I use Aperture, and a little app called Aperture Inspector to pull all sorts of stats from my libraries.

Is Aperture Inspector a plug in for Aperture? Would you mind telling me how to get it?

As always, your knowledge and insight to all of this makes this forum great. Thanks!

EDIT: link was already provided in the thread! :)

Lenses / Re: +18 AFMA out of the box....return?
« on: May 17, 2013, 05:09:36 AM »
Well I just ran my 50mm f/1.4 through Focal Pro about eight times tonight. EV was 11. When Focal worked (it kept erroring out saying it could no longer find the target and then it prevented me from closing any of the app's windows) I got results from +10 to +15. When I got the +15 it said the fitment quality was poor. I got +10 with a "good" fitment quality, +12 with excellent, and twice +13 with excellent fitment quality and confidence rating. I set the lens to +13.

I don't know whether it is the new version of Focal or just this particular lens, but every other lens I have was much easier to calibrate...with no errors when using the program. Of course, f/2.8 is the fastest aperture of all my other lens, so perhaps having a two-stop aperture difference makes a difference to focus reliability on the target?

Anyways, I have tomorrow to return the lens before the long weekend here. I'm wondering if I should and get a different copy of it, or just keep playing with this current one. When I first brought it home it front-focused something fierce before I calibrated it. Now it is pretty good with focusing. I'm just getting a little anxious with all this camera and lens micro adjustment talk.

Advice? :-\

There's no problem with a big adjustment, per se, as long as it's 20 units or less.  The problem is when you change upi your gear.  If your lens needs +18 on your current body, what if you get a new body that is off in the same direction - now, 20 units of adjustment isn't enough.

Thank you and jdramirez for the reply! Makes sense.

So you guys are saying that if there's a big adjustment to the afma that a lens should be returned until one is found that doesn't require as much of an adjustment?

I just bought the 50mm f/1.4 yesterday and calibrated it. I got 11+.

Think I should try for a different copy of the lens too?

Was at the Calgary Bird Sanctuary the other day. The male geese are something to watch. Very territorial right now!

All taken with EF 70-200mm f/2.8L with 2xII Extender.

I tried about 10 times last night. Nothing seemed to work.

Finally I gave up, removed Magic Lantern from the camera, and took the camera to the store I bought it at. They're sending it to Canon for me.

Tonight playing with live-view mode I noticed some stuck red pixels. I followed the method as described above of removing the lens and putting the cap back on the camera, and then putting the camera in manual sensor cleaning mode for 30 seconds.

Nothing changed. I still have three stuck red pixels - one being right in the center.

What do people recommend? Sending it in to Canon under warranty? I have heard they just replace the sensor.
I had to do it twice before all the hot pixels disappeared ... maybe your camera requires a few tries.

Very cool! I liked that it's a little 'different' compared to other droplet photographs.

Wow, that first one had some severe problems.  I hope the 2nd one holds up better.  Keep us informed.

Yeah, it sure did. This new one is working brilliantly - no more focus issues, no more soft images, and overall just a joy to shoot with.

Thank you again for your help on the matter, as always! I'll post again if anything should go wrong with this copy of the lens.

I just calibrated the new Tokina using Focal. The results are interesting compared the faulty version I had which seemed to go all over the place on the graph.

Old first, new second.

I took the lens back today to Calgary's The Camera Store. Even though I was out of my two week return period they replaced it on the spot. Absolutely incredible service!

The new lens works much better - no focus issues and razor sharp all the way through.

The Camera Store has a good reputation.  I've considered driving up to buy a lens from them, a few years ago, when there was a big currency difference, I could have bought a new 300mm f/2.8 IS for $3500 from them.

Well if you ever do make it to Calgary I still highly recommend you check The Camera Store out, despite our currencies being pretty much par these days. It's a phenomenal store in every way.

Thanks again for you help, Mt. Spokane.

What do you guys think? I'm generally seeing more softness in the bottom right-hand corner than anywhere else in the image.

The camera was perfectly aligned perpendicular to the wall. I used three spirit levels to make sure everything was level as well. I used only the center focus point. Aperture is f/2.8.

First two are at 28mm.
