When talking about a bigger sensor the question to ask is how much bigger? It may not be going to APS-C size, but rather a percentage increase above the sensor in the current G12.

Canon have to add something new to the next camera in the G series. I suggest a faster lens -- the Canon G12 is only f/2.8 compared with f/2 for the Canon s95.

It amazes me the number of people that claim a zoom with image stabilisation is just as good as a prime lens with a large aperture. This is not correct. There are several reasons for this:

1. The role of aperture in composition: wide apertures can be used for their narrow depth of field and bokeh effect. This is a key element of creative photography.
2. Prime lenses are optimised for a specific focal length (obviously they only have one). The image quality of zoom lenses may vary at different focal lengths.
3. Prime lenses have less elements. Zoom and image stabilisation add extra elements to the lens and affect image quality.

If you are happy using an image stabilised zoom then good for you. Please understand there are very good reasons why other photographers use prime lenses though.

I'm interested to see if Canon release a cheaper 30mm-ish prime lens. Either an update of the existing 35mm f/2 or a new lens such as a 30mm f/1.8.

I thought something like this could have been released with the two new Rebels, however it seems the two new Speedlites were the goodies there.

I suspect the 1100D will have a small form factor as its unique selling point. It will be the smallest DSLR ever made by Canon. This was hinted at in a comment by a Canon executive in an article published by Reuters(?) a while ago (can't be bothered searching for the link).

I am curious about whether there will be any new lenses to complement this small camera. Perhaps a new extra-small kit lens or maybe a small prime lens such as a new 35mm f/2.

Both C and N need to lower their margins and come up with more lenses with lower prices which have 2.8 and IS/VR.

I'm sure everybody would love cheaper lenses, but there is more profit in camera bodies that get replaced every two or three years rather than lenses which last longer and don't date as rapidly.

It's easy to get obsessed with the specs of the latest camera. It's worth remembering that two years from now both Canon and Nikon will have released even newer models to replace them. Hopefully a new camera will last a bit longer than that, but you will probably replace it within four or five years. Who knows what Canon or Nikon might be offering then?

The bottom line is: they're both very good cameras and in the hands of a competent photographer either of them can take great photos. (I haven't used either camera, but I am confident in the truth of this statement.)

Could the new camera body be the 1000D replacement? It is unlikely to be anything revolutionary. Just a 550D minus a few features. Probably 12MP sensor and 720p video.

I am hoping this might be launched with cheaper 30-35mm prime lens. That would be a lot more interesting than the camera itself.

I have also been waiting to see if Canon releases this lens or something similar. If nothing is announced at Photokina then I will probably buy the Canon EF 28mm f/1.8.
