EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: So, which memory cards for video?
« on: July 17, 2012, 04:19:37 PM »
The SD slot in the Mk3 isn't UHS, so even if you put a super fast SD card in there, it will work, but will only read/write at class 10 speed.  My SD slot is usually left empty.  Would've much preferred dual CF slots, but whatayagonnado

Privilege of the 1D X.

Which is right, there has to be something else than shutter speed that justifies the extra price.

The 50L is a superb lens but its overkill for video. Its meant for high speed stills but you wont notice the difference in video. Get the 50mm 1.4 canon

+1
You really won't need the 50L, it's a great lens, sure. But that single step won't make difference. Also, if you would've ever tried to focus even with the 50mm f/1.4 USM at wide open aperture, you'd realize how insane f/1.2 would be. And for video even worse!
I would also consider the 50mm f/1.8, although it's made out of plastic, optically it's superb! Some do even say that the f/1.8 is superior to the f/1.4. I don't think so, but they're really close together in points of IQ and sharpness.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Discounts for the 1DX for Christmas?

If you're lucky they'll show up at online dealers outside USA/Canada perhaps.
That would maybe make the price a bit cheaper.

Or Canon realized they don't need to sell this kind of camera on discounters etc., so that they won't even give them that wonderful baby!

Grüeziwohl! Lucky you!  ;D

Initially I thought about preordering on digitec, but then they took the 1D X from their website and I decided to wait until arrival, giving me at least a chance to compare prices. I expect the last one or two months will pass as well, after having to wait for so long.

Salü ;D
yeah, digitec had it at CHF 8000 but then it was taken down, probably because canon decided that only professional photo partners (whatever that is) would sell it.

I'm still waiting and i'm guessing i still have a looooong way to go since i payed it in profot in March :(

lg, nico

Salamander mitenander,

Digitec had it, I told 'em if I can pre-order and they were like "as soon as we have the prices". They took down the 1D X and never put it up again.

However, I prefer to support local dealers anyway. Also, I think Canon doesn't give it to online dealers because they'll ruin the prices. As they always do. So in order to keep the local dealers alive, you really should order there :)
I only order >500 CHF lenses from Digitec, everything else I get at my local dealer.

By the way: You can find the Canon Professional dealers for Switzerland here: http://de.canon.ch/cps/haendler/

I'm an argentine in Switzerland and I also wait for my 1D X. I do mostly photojournalism.

Grüezi Herr n0iZe  ;)

You got your camera? Cool man! I'm very happy for you :)
Where was it that you ordered it?
Please write what you think of it when you have some time :)
Lg

Yes I got my 1D X. Couldn't leave it at home so I took it with me to my office, although that's pretty useless - neither do I have interesting subjects nor time to shoot them here... :(

I ordered it from the Canon Pro dealer in Basel, but I already did so in December. So that's why I already have it... And as it seems two or three people were pre-ordering even earlier than me.

I have been looking to buy a 1D X since its announcement, but where I live (in Switzerland) the camera is still not available for sale, although there are signs, that it may be coming soon.

Just recently I purchased a 5D Mark III. This makes it much easier on me to wait for the 1D X.

As soon as the 1D X appears in stores I will hurry to purchase one. Then the 5D Mark III will make a fabulous secondary/backup camera. I will also keep using my 7D for that bit of extra reach. My original thinking was to use the 7D as a secondary/backup camera for the 1D X, but I dropped that notion as soon as I had taken some night shots with the 5D Mark III.

Salli,

The 1D X are starting to appear in the stores.
However, only pre-orders are getting filled at the moment. And only very very limited quantity has been sent to the stores. I pre-ordered my 1D X back in December... I received mine yesterday, and yes, I live in Switzerland as well.
I think it will take at least a month or two until they're in the store without pre-orders. If you're lucky, that is.

Will test the camera a little today after 4 PM and of course on the weekend. Damn, am I glad that my girlfriend bought herself a 7D - we can go and shoot together and I won't have to hear any of that "I should get priority, not the camera!!!" stuff.
Tried it out a little yesterday and with the 16-35mm f/2.8L II it's awesome. Also I love the LCD screen (1Ds Mark II LCD sucks big time against this!!!!) a lot.

I'm a lucky man.

I want my 1D X as well  :-[

I'm getting jealous. All you people have got shipment notices and I still do not know when I'll finally get mine. :(

Today I stopped being jealous - I have just picked up my 1D X from my local store and I'm sooo happy!
Only thing bothering me is that the charger takes long to charge the battery haha. But oh well, even 20 seconds would be too long atm.

Perhaps you should check out the booq Python series for DSLRs.

http://www.booqbags.com/us/python/

I for myself own the Python pack, which gives me enough space for my whole equipment + MacBook Air and iPad 2 and is very nicely padded.
Also it comes with a raincoat, which could be very useful in some occasions.  ;)

I made my decision and picked up a 100mm f/2.8L IS USM at my local Canon Pro store. Also I got me a 1.4x Extender III to make that 70-200 lens a bit longer.

Good time to get them with the current rebates - but still enough time to get doubts because the Kenko 1.4x tc is up to par with the Canon concerning iq & fits the 100L, too :->

There will always be space for doubts. Everything has it's good and it's bad part, so I'll now just have to live with my decision. :) If I really need the 1.4x Extender on the 100L as well I can still get me a Kenko one - and that combo is still cheaper than the 180L. :)

A few weeks ago I called Adorama to inform them of my CPS gold status and they insisted it wouldn't give me a any preference. I pretty much had an argument with the rep but telling him to put in the info anyway. He said Canon directly informed them CPS status would not be a factor.  I ordered mine last October, too and so far no ship notice.

It isn't an Adorama decision as to whether or not to give CPS members priority shipping; it is a Canon decision. We can certainly add to any customer profile that he/she is a CPS member, but for this release, Canon, as I said, is not allocating units specifically for these customers.

I'm really sorry; you would need to contact Canon themselves to challenge this. (Not that I would expect it to change their policy on this occasion, but it might be worth registering your feelings with them)

Wow, now even Adorama is in CR threads, I'm glad you guys care that much about peoples opinion about you.

Regarding the CPS decision: I think it's a good thing, otherwise CPS members who were too lazy or just too late to order early could've blocked other peoples cameras. I would've been pissed if I ordered from Adorama on the 14th and then some CPS guy would order in June and still get his camera before me... So Canon really has a point there.

About my camera:
I went to my store yesterday and asked again. He took a look at the list and told me the following: "Well, you're the first one on the list. As soon as shipment comes, you'll get yours and you'll be contacted by us.". When I inquired when the camera shipment should come he told me that he expects it in the next weeks. He said it could be that I get it next week, but it could just aswell be in two weeks. Or even three. However, I don't think it will take more than two weeks.
But we'll see. As long as I know I'm first on the list, I'm waiting quite happily :)

Dear all,

Thank you very much for all your tips, opinions and discussion.

I made my decision and picked up a 100mm f/2.8L IS USM at my local Canon Pro store.
Also I got me a 1.4x Extender III to make that 70-200 lens a bit longer.

Thanks a lot.

The old version of the 100mm is NOT compatible with the 1.4 x and 2x extenders.!! (i dont know about the new ones)
Flowers; go for the 100mm
Butterfly's: go for the 180 ( they tend to fly away when you get to close :-))
The MP-E 65mm 1-5x Macro will give you 5 x magnification, you will need to get VERY close and you will
also need a ringflash.
Do butterflies sit still for autofocus? No but if you get up early in the morning before they get heated by the sun,
then they will sit still. Another trick is to catch one and put it in the refrigiator for a while.
Oh by the way, checkout this guy's pictures in his gallery

Thanks a lot for the advice, but I won't be putting butterflies into my refrigerator. Somehow it reminds me of this:

The hint for getting up early is greatly appreciated, I'll try that. :)

If your 70-200 is already f/2.8, that's a great portrait lens and I'd get the 180L. Else, I'd say the 100L is the better choice.

+1 ... 100L + 70-200 is really overlapping, you could just get the non-L macro in this case. One drawback of the 180mm macro is that the af performance on the 1dx/5d3 is worse than the 100L.

That's my main problem - AF. And I'm afraid that AF could be even worse with the 1.4x Extender attached to the 180L...

Anyone ever tried a 180L with a 1.4 Extender? Would be quite an expensive solution, but I could use the extender for my 70-200 also, so maybe that would be an option?

I'm using the Kenko 1.4x tc on the 100L, works fine, iq and af @f4 is very good. If you want the Canon extender, be sure that it fits the lens. Concerning 180+tc: A friend of mine is using this on his Nikon, seems to work pretty well for him as a combined macro and tele lens with very near focusing distance.

I would probably go for the Canon Extender, although I've seen that the Kenko one delivers really good IQ.
Also I've seen that the 2x Extender really isn't what I want to do to my photos  ;)
