Lenses / Re: 400 f/2.8L IS I vs. 400 f/2.8L IS II
« on: Today at 02:41:05 PM »
I had the version I of the lens second hand for a year, sold it and recently got a hold of version II through a mentorship programme. In terms of IQ and sharpness, difficult to find major differences between the two, AF is fast on both except it had a tendency to keep searching more on the version I (in my case only maybe?), but what I found to be a blessing is the obvious and welcome decrease in weight. I literally got severe back pain carrying the version I, not telling the version II is a featherweight but oh so easier on the shoulders.

Never heard of it being mentioned

With all the uwa architecture opportunities you might consider renting a TS lens.

Planned equipment would be a 70-200 mm f/2.8 and 24 mm TS-E.

Lenses / Re: Who has pre-ordered or will order 200-400

See now I have a dilemma...I have been saving my money to purchase the 400mm 2.8 for the past couple of years and I'm about $1500 off from paying straight cash for it. I am planning to have it by the time fall rolls around for some high school football action. Now with this lens finally becoming a reality I wonder should I just go ahead go for this or just go ahead and pull the trigger on the 400 since I've been saving for it for so long...

Decisions, decisions...
Unless you will need less than 400mm I cannot see why you must change plans.

400 2.8 L IS II weighs the same as the 200-400 and is one stop better...

That's the thing though, one stop better, sharper and more depth of field, but you miss shots if subject comes too close, 200-400 has that versatility but a stop worse... decisions, decisions.

Non-existent lens, so filter question is superfluous.

Here is a comparison of the 200-400 mtfs at 400mm and 560mm with the f/2.8 300mm II + 1.4x TC at 420 mm, and the f/2.8 400mm II prime, and then the 200-400mm at 560mm with TC, the 300mm at 600mm with 2xTC, and the 400mm prime with 1.4x TC. I'll stick with the 300mm + TCs as the 200-400 is too heavy for me as well as too pricey. All these lenses seriously outgun the 100-400mm f/5.6, and you see it quite easily in the resolution of detail when you compare them in practice.

So basically MTF say 400 with a 1.4 is still sharper than the 200-400?

Lenses / Re: Best lens for capturing the Milky Way?
« on: April 30, 2013, 01:07:37 AM »
Here is an example of using the 8-15mm Fisheye I took. Although I did use a long exposure to get star trails. Hopefully it is still informative for you.

I also have used the TS-E 24mm II for astrophotography and have quite enjoyed it, however I can definitely understand wanting the EF 24mm 1.4 opposed to it for that specific use. Here is an example although I do not have any Milky Way shots with the 24mm.

How did you manage to fit a filter in front of the fisheye? Or you just used bulb mode in near darkness?

Thank you for suggestions. I heard the metro stations are something to behold.

Up till now means to this very minute, been using the combination and never had issues.

Never tried using a warming filter, they are not used that much now that we are in the digital era.

Would a 24 mm TS-E II or the 8-15 mm fisheye be good for this type of capture?

What sort of performance would I get if I put my 2x III on the 400 mm version II? Close to the 800 mm performance up til now?

Ive got one and can testify how good they are. Only problem I have is they put a cool blue cast on the pics. Otherwise, the best filters around. Good luck with the big stopper, youll love them but getting the timing right is a bit hit or miss.

Cast is easily correctable in post if shooting in RAW. Problem is.... they are fragile as &^%/2!
