PowerShot Cameras / Re: Canon PowerShot G12 Digital Camera

Without the flippy screen it's not worth it 'Techradar' seems to think so too with a non committal review.
If push came to shove I'd buy a G12 at the lower price but then it's not a lot different to my G11 which is working perfectly well since it's overhaul.

I was really hoping for something more radical The only major changes are a better lens and the loss of the screen which makes it a no go for me and I am not shelling out 500 quid just for the new lens, for my needs it's just not justified. I'd be replacing something OK with something mediocre!

Nikon just stole the Canon's thunder!

Well, that looks like the end of all the expectation and enthusiasm for the sucessor to the G12!
Just another compact P&S with nothing special to recommend it.
What happened at Canon, did the earthquake damage their thinking processes?

PowerShot / Re: Down to the RX100 or G15...

The G15 weighs less than the P7700 Because they got rid of the vari angle screen and have a lighter smaller body and lens. If I was happy with a smaller body I'd go for the Sony RX100 but I already have a Canon Ixus A4050 which I bought when my G11 wasn't working and took weeks to get repaired because they had to get a new back from Japan. So I didn't need a smaller camera, there are plenty around to choose from including the RX100.
I wanted and expected a step up from the G12 not a step back into the past.
Incidentally the P7700 still weighs less than the G12.

PowerShot / Great dissapointment, the G15 is a flipping flop!

What a big disappointment! One step forwards two backwards! We expected a Digic 5 processor, nothing new there. We expected a faster lens, nothing new there. We expected a better sensor all we got was the same old 1/1.7" upgraded to CMOS just like everyone else.

Then the disaster, they got rid of the variable angled screen! You what! Something the last three models at least had and which had become part and parcel of the line. Why? To make it slimmer so that now you can put it in your pocket! Excuse me but I dont use my camera in my pocket!

So Now the G15 is just like any other compact P&S with a 1/1.7" sensor and there are loads around and for sure this isn't going to compete with the Sony RX100.

So bye bye Canon. You shot yourself in the feet with this one.
I'm heading over to the Nikon camp where they knew what we wanted when they cloned the G12 and gave it a better lens!

Don't worry I am not dumping my G11 just yet but I am not a happy bunny. Number one the P7700 is not available yet and number two as you quite rightly mention the lens is an unknown quantity anyhow the same goes for the ƒ1.8 lens on the G15. I just had notification the G15 will sell at 499$ in the US no doubt 499€ in Europe.

I am going to Japan on the 8th of October so there's no way I will be able to get my hands on a P7700 anyway so it looks like the G11 will go on it's third trip to Japan. Be very silly to buy a P7700 in haste.

Oh dear, Canon just shot themselves in the foot.

Two steps forward, the sensor and the lens. One step back to the past, removing the swivel screen.

I am not dumping my G11 just yet but I am not happy with the G15 Canon dumped the flipping screen. Talk about a step backwards. I just had notification the G15 will sell in the US at 499$

Canon made the G15 smaller but at what cost, it now has to compete with all the other 'pocketable' cameras and will definitely lose out against the RX100 as it has nothing else to offer against that bigger sensor. What a disaster.

One step forward, one step back:
They lost the flipping screen, it was so useful, waist level shots, ground level shots, over the head shots, macro from awkward angles.

If it has a flippy screen and better video than the G12, I'll happily pay $600 for it and replace my G11.

It lost the flipping screen so it lost me, I'm off to buy a Nikon P7700 to replace my G11, tests or no tests I am sure I wont notice any appreciable difference in IQ as the sensors are the same size!

OK so the lens is not quite as bright but it has a longer zoom. I hardly used the OVF so that's no big deal. The G15 may have a faster lens but it's only nominal. I'd rather have had the minor extra thickness of the flippy screen than something 'pocketable'. Sorry Canon, you lost the plot. You had a brilliant camera and you just went and ruined one of it's selling points. That screen was really useful. A flat screen in bright sunlight is hopeless.

How could they ruin a camera that was so good and had such a following? What got into their heads? There were already enough pocketable cameras around we didn't need another one. they even had one themselves the S100 now the S110 so why another? If I really wanted a flat screen pocketable camera I'd have bought the Sony RX100!

Considering that the RX100 is also cheaper... easy win for Sony, as far as I am concerned.

but we are not comparing the G1X with anything here, we were discussing the G15 rumours. The G1X was an anomaly the X indicating it was an eXperiment. Now there's an EOS M the G1X has no place between the G15 (whatever it might eventually turn out to be) and the EOS M.

Sure the RX100 gets rave reviews but it has a short zoom and no vari angle screen apart from being pricey for what it is. If the new G15 doesn't have a vari-angled screen the Nikon P7700 might be a better bet once it's sensor and lens have been tested.

One more day of nail biting.

Maybe the case, but from what we have seen so far, neither the G15 or S110 look exciting as the RX100.

Why isn't Canon offering more with a larger sensor?  Though that is only part of it.  If they haven't corrected the performance seen recently in the G1X, S100, and G12, then no spec will make up for it.

It all depends what you are looking for in a camera, so far the specs we have seen for the G15 have only been rumours, nothing official. We will only know tomorrow for certain what the camera will actually look like and what the specs will really be. Then it will be a matter of putting it to the test before making any comments on the relative merits of one against the other. We assume there will be an official announcement tomorrow because it will be the first day of Photokina but nothing is certain 'until the fat lady sings'! :)

If it has a flippy screen and better video than the G12, I'll happily pay $600 for it and replace my G11.

If no flippy screen, NO SALE.  (The leaked photo doesn't look look promising.) I'll sooner buy a used G12 on eBay.

I for one have been eagerly anticipating the G15 and all the rumours have been just that, unsubstantiated rumours, we have had nothing concrete so far only speculation. Perhaps's, maybe's educated guesses but nothing concrete so there's no guarantee the 'leaked' image is accurate.

That the single image doesn't show any evidence of a swivel screen doesn't mean there's no swivel screen only that the previous swivel screen had an external hinge bump. If I hold my G11 at the same angle there's a distinct hinge bump whereas the image of the G15, if an accurate representation shows a smooth side. So there are three possibilites,
1) the G15 doesn't have a swivel screen anymore,
2) the image is an artist's impression of what the G15 might look like and not an accurate representation of what the camera will look like when announced (wont be the first time, look how many artists impressions there have been of iPhones over the years which bore little resemblance to the finished article),
3) that the G15 has been completely redesigned of which the repositioning of the viewfinder, pop up flash and loss of dials, bears witness and just maybe Canon have integrated the swivel screen better into the body. Apple did it on their MacBookAirs.

However if when announced tomorrow the swivel screen has gone, so will I have, to the other camp and Nikon P7700 will get my vote and my money despite not having a viewfinder.
If we are wrong in our observations and interpretations of a leaked image are wrong and the screen is still there the G15 will get my vote and my money. We have to wait and see wont we.

Oh gosh, just a day to go I am biting my nails in anticipation. Will it just be announced or will it be released? I see no stores even offering pre orders yet.

Just a point brought up elsewhere, has anyone else noticed that the new body (if a true representation) seems slimmer than the G12 and that the vari-angle screen hinge 'hump' has vanished, the focus lamp position has moved and there now seems to be a pop up flash apart from the missing exposure and ISO adjustment dials?

Hope it's not another EOS M fiasco, announced in July and not available for three months!

Now there's the Lumix LX7 and the Canon G15 possibly there will be a few G11 and G12s going second hand you could pick up cheap?

Not quite sure which model you are referring to maybe Lumix LX7? but it lacks the vari angle screen and the P&S doesn't have a viewfinder?

Ah yes, I had forgotten that other drawback of the G1X.
Surely now with the G15 and the EOS M the G1X becomes an anomaly, just redundant?

That's wonderful if the G11 can turn out pictures like that just imagine what the G15 will do with a ƒ1.8 lens and improved sensor!

I tried a G1X on a recent trip, put my G11 along side for size comparison then put one in each hand to test the weights. G 11 wins every time. The G1X is a kind of studio camera, neither bird nor beast. Now that Canon have the G15 and the EOS M I wonder if there's any reason to keep the G1X as it was only vaguely enthusiastically received by a small group and clearly didn't sell well hence the price drop.

The G series is just perfect for travel if you dont want to carry loads of kit. My G11 fits in my bum bag ready for use at a moment's notice. Does everything from macro to infinity. Unless you are a pro these days who needs a dslr unless you really have to turn out A3 or even A2 prints. I have an A3 printer and have hardly eer used it for photos only for genealogical trees.

So is there any need now for a Pro1X?

be interesting to see tests on the glass when both models are compared. P7700 wont be released until the end of the month.
