Software & Accessories / Re: Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4... DOH!!!

Win8 + the $5 Start8 program is a winner. Recently built a new PC and purchased a system builder copy of Win8 Pro and it really couldn't have been easier (as an aside, the system builder version is for home builders, not professional builders, they'd get a volume discount copy).

Zero driver issues, awesome stability, I've really had no problems with it.

The Metro interface really is pretty terrible on a non touch system though, but get Start8 and you'll almost never have to deal with it.

LR4.3 runs great, though I did build a pretty beefy system so it should.

On the AFMA thing, why does everyone assume it can be simply implemented via firmware in the 60d or Rebel models?  I assume it takes some processing power to implement on the fly and some storage to keep the values for each lens.  How do we know these cameras posses it?

My guess is they do, but not every Digic 5 has to be created equal, it may just be a general architecture.

I fall into the category of people that can't be bothered with it anyway, bought a 60d fully knowing it wasn't available and fully knowing I'd never take advantage of it.

And here I am having just replaced by T1i with. 60D because I found the T1i too small for comfort with anything but the kit lens (well, that was one reason). Kidding aside, my wife who has much smaller hands than I do and no desire to take the camera out of P mode would love the SL1.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Transition from Nikon to Canon

I just recently purchased a 60d as an upgrade from a T1i and am loving it.  The ergonomics are much better, the top LCDand controls are great and the viewfinder is much brighter. Add in the faster continuous shooting and deeper buffer and you've got a winner.

I definitely think there are some advantages to shooting e same system as friends / family. You can share gear easily and you have others you can ask for advice that will know your system.  Most of my family shoots Canon and it's great that I can just pick up one of their cameras and know where everything is, or can hand my camera off to someone to get a shot of me and know they can handle my camera.

That said this is a very slight consideration for me and would only sway me if I had no other reasons for choosing a camera.  Get what works and feels right for you.

I don't understand why people think the EF system would be suitable for a mirrorless camera. The flange back distance is huge compared to Sony's E Mount or micro 4/3. And as traveller said that equals a thick non pocketable camera and I've already got one of those (my T1i).

I'm really disappointed in the direction Canon seems to be taking with non-L primes. Can't we just have ring USM updates of the 35 f/2, the 50 f1.8 and the like?  No, we've got to add IS to slower, short focal length primes and jack the price to $800.

Again, I guess if someone wants a tiny lens for FF the 40mm makes some sense, but for crop?  No thanks.

I really don't get it. I'm a crop shooter and this focal length seems too long for a walk around lens and is there really any benefit to something this small on the FF bodies?

30mm or so and you might have sold me, besides it isn't as if my 35mm f2 is all that big.

The textbook definition of a "normal" lens is one whose focal length is equal to the diagonal of the imaging area. If you remember your Pythagoras, a full-frame 24mm x 36mm sensor has a diagonal of 43.27mm, meaning this 40 gives you as close to a normal lens as you'll find. I could see mounting it to an un-gripped 5D for a street / party type of setup. Hell, it looks like it's no bigger than an extension tube!

Totally get the focal length for FF, but is there any benefit to something this small on such a big camera?  Doesn't look like it would even extend past the hand grip!  Hey, performance being equal I guess smaller is always better, but things like the 35 f2 and 50 1.8 are already tiny and light.

Lenses / Re: Pricing of the New Lenses

Wow the pricing of the primes is shocking. Who are they marketing them towards?  I have been waiting for a USM update on some of the older primes (really want to replace my 35mm f2 with a modern focus motor) and the 28mm looked like a decent standardish focal length for APS-C. But $800!  For f2.8 and IS that I don't really want?  Insane.

Time to look at some 3rd party options.

This looks perfect for diving with a nice underwater housing. Much smaller than a DSLR with housing but a much larger sensor than current P&S options. Can't wait.
