EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: CF card recommendation for 1DX
« on: April 08, 2013, 03:33:45 PM »
Don't have the SanDisks, but have had no problems with the Lexar 1000x. I have 2 of the 16GB in my 1DX and I shoot primarily surfing which is fast action with a good amount of long bursts.

If you learn to use back focus you will love it and never go back. Makes so much sense to separate the focus from the shutter in many instances for me.

I'm intrigued by this little camera. Shooting in water and swimming with a small camera would be great. Put this in any manufacturers housing along with a 580 or 600 in a flash housing and thats the easiest thing to swim with ever.

Canon General / Re: your scariest photography moment?
« on: March 11, 2013, 03:11:04 PM »
Seeing a nice puddle of water inside the port of my SPL housing. Luckily it was only my 30D and my nifty fifty in there so it wouldn't have been a huge loss. It was a tough swim in with head high surf and good current that day all while trying to hold the housing over my head and out of the water.

Oh well, found the leak, fixed it and have been swimming with it again. Still scary as it hasn't happened in 3+ years of shooting in the water. Also a little nerve racking considering I will soon be getting a housing for my 1DX.

Lenses / Re: Sigma lens for birding?

I have the Sigma 120-400 and am very happy with it. I would like to have a prime 400 but do not have the funds and I have found this lens more than sharp enough. Fast focus as i shoot primarily surfing with a lot of movement in front of and behind the subject. No real complaints honestly other than I with it were faster.

Great shots. I'm pretty happy with my decision to pick up the 24-70 and 16-35 for now. I have used the 70-200 VII so I know how amazing it is and that is part of why I was so torn. I'll use the other lens to make some money shooting weddings and what not. The toughest part will be deciding whether to pick up the lens or an SPL waterhousing for the 1DX next.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 1DX import issues (not my camera)
« on: January 18, 2013, 04:53:26 PM »
My buddy just posted this on facebook. Not my 1DX but he just got one for the company he works with.

Any idea why they would all appear like this?

Got the lenses yesterday and am beyond happy with my choices. Just shooting around the house and the beach a bit the past two days. Super fast autofocus, quick to lock on in low light also. Feel so much better on the 1DX than my non L primes which were my go to's prior. Whether I get the 70-200 or a waterhousing for the 1DX next will depend on what the majority of my work is moving into the spring.

My 24-70 II is on its way right now. Can't wait to put it on the 1DX and shoot around.

I have a long lens for shooting from the beach already so the 70-200 wasn't going to fill that need, granted I do find myself pulled back to 200mm often for a more landscape style shot.

Instead of going longer after a bit of thinking for the future I instead went with the 16-35mm. I could use something wide as I only have a 10mm fisheye that I shoot with in the water on my 30D. In the future I'll be getting a housing for the 1Dx and the 16-35 is a great lens for in the water.

Why would you have enough money for the 1DX n 24-70II but not 70-200II??
if money is an issue with getting 70-200IIIS, I would have get 5d3+24-70II+70-200II.

What does this have to do with anything? I'm not asking you to consider my money issues. I have the 1Dx because I worked hard to save up for it and wanted the speed when shooting surfing which is primarily what I do. I now have once again saved up a bit more money so would like to add to my gear. I'll just add the 24-70 for now as I'd really like to have a good normal zoom in the bag.

Have the money to get the 24-70 2.8 II to pair with my 1Dx. It seems like a no brainer to me. I'll be using for event photography, portraits and will be getting into weddings. That said I'd really like to have a 70-200 as I love that range and use it often whether for surf photography or something else. Given the ISO performance on the 1Dx do I need IS (I really don't have enough money for the 2.8 IS II but may be able to swing the ver I)? Could I even go to f4 with good results or will I be spoiled by the sharpness of the 24-70?

Underwater / Re: Advice on inexpensive underwater system
« on: December 19, 2012, 08:09:54 PM »
You have two separate requests here that honestly require two different types of housings, or at least two different types of ports. Shooting over/under like said requires a large dome. If you're just getting into I'd really suggest starting with point and shoot and as you discover your specific needs. I shoot with a Canon 30D in an SPL housing. Its considered a splash housing and purpose built to shoot surf.

Full under water shot with a 10mm Sigma Fisheye

Above water with a 24mm 2.8

24mm again above water

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 1Dx battery?
« on: November 19, 2012, 05:24:32 PM »
Just looking to see if there were any good options. There are plenty for some of the older cameras and I've had zero problems with the ones I purchased for my 30D.

That said the LP-4EN does have great life but when I begin shooting with the 1Dx in 37 degree water for 2 hours on end it will drain much faster than I'd like.

And apologies that I'm a college graduate looking for a job who shoots surfing which sadly pays next to nothing. Busted my butt to save up for the 1Dx and am working hard to get enough for a housing.
