1. (less likely) The release of a new 100-400 will take some time after all because there's no immediate market pressure

2. (more likely) The new 100-400 will be much more expensive, i.e. generating more profit for Canon, and will be an "upgrade" to the existing lens rather than a replacement on the same level - more like 24-70 mk1 to mk2.

1. There is no market pressure, nobody makes a better lens in the size/price range.  That's why Canon hasn't changed the 100-400mm and the 400mm f5.6.

2.  New price will be similar to Nikon 80-400mm, probably something like $500 more.

Voted for the 400mm F4. I think this is very potential lens now they have the glass and parts for the 200-400 which it could share a lot of. Just a simple matter of a few adjustment and voila! Although I'm not so sure this would fit into my reasonable big white price thinking of £4500-£5000 judging on the price of the 200-400.

I think your price is in the right ball park.  The cost should be slightly lower than the 300mm f2.8L USM II IS.

I've been hoping that the rumoured price was wrong.
Nikon's 200-400 is less expensive than their 500mm f4. 
I was hoping Canon's price structure  would be similar.

I like the concept of the 200-400mm 1.4x, but not at the price. 
When i get a big white it wil either be the 500mm f4 or the 300mm f2.8 with the 2xIIIl

The masses aren't likely to have the $3,000+  needed to get the telephoto goodnes you are proposing.

Insightful post, PBD...but you're missing the big picture.  It's not just a 'because we can' moment - it's one more small step on the road to the EF TS 12-400mm f/2L Macro IS Pancake lens we all want.

Will it take extenders and focus at f8 ?

I bought  a 1.4x III from B&H under the rebate program. 
Definitely savings from the price before the rebate.
Not a  $50 dollar savings  as there price was already less than the MSRP, but check the cart,
$499- $50 rebate  = $429
They certainly have passed on savings over and above the rebate.

If you don't like the price  don't buy.

I was shooting with the T1i which I believe has  the same sensor as your 50D. The 400mm f5.6 is my usual lens.
I restricted my ISO to 800 and did som noise reduction in post.

I got tired of waiting for the 7D II and got a 5D3 just before christmas.  I now typicaly shot with  the 400mm f5.6 and the Kenko 300 DGX 1.4x  and go up to ISO 3200, typically without needing noise reduction.

Hope Sigma updates their 50mm 1.4 to the same standard.
Sigma's on a bit of a roll i got a 30mm for my m4/3 camera last year that is really good.

I'm curious...what is disturbing about the way the results are presented?  Are you equally 'disturbed' by their presentation of the results that show 14.4 stops of DR for the D800? 

What disturbs me is the lack of apples to apples comparisons.  It would have been good if they had at least given some comparisons of the two camera's with the same lens.  If I'm reading the data correctly the Canon 5D3 with the Sigma 85 f1.4 has the same DxO score as the D800 with the same lens.  The data give the sharpness of the Canon combo in their top ten, but not the sharpness of the Nikon Combo.  Does this mean the Canon combo is sharper that the nikon combo or did they just not test the nikon combo.  All their top ten sharpness combo's tell me is that the Canon 300mm f2.8L is one great piece of glass.   

It would also have been informative if they had tested some of the nikon lenses on Canon bodies.  What happens with a nikkor 85mm f1.4 G on a 5D3.

Focuses just fine at f8 with a 400mm f5.6 and a Kenko 300 DGX 1.4

Yes, that is the case.  I got an e-mail from them with a link to download teh SW.  Hopefully they have fixed the link by now since it was missing the .exe extension.  Once you stick that on there it works just fine.

Thanks, I was wondering how to get it to install after digging the link out of my spam folder.

Guess Google wanted us to work a little for the free upgrade.

400mm f5.6L Great lens for birding.

I also really like the 200mm f2.8L, fast, sharp and lightweight.

Can't really tell anything from this spec.
How the sensor handles noise will be the decidng factor for me.
If it is basically the same as the current 7D with usable ISO 1600 and 3200 then I will get it.
They should also probably tweak the AF system to make it as accurate as those  on the 5D3, 1DX. Nineteen cross points is fine they just need to be accurate points.

At Building Panoramics the only thing that we usually shoot with wings are flying buttresses 

But here are two pics of a Woodpecker feeding it's young. Taken with the mk2 and a 300 mm f4 plus 1.4X converter, positioned about 10 feet away from the tree and fired by wireless remote.

Great feeding shot.

Neuro, you just failed Photography 101. 
We just had our last lecture before the final exam and the instructor took pains to point out that
   "A camera is a light tight box with a sensor inside and a mechanism for letting light in."
I'm pretty sure thats going to be one of the answers required on the final exam.

Just  an observation, of the fifteen students in the class,  2 have crop Nikons, 1 has a Sony Nex and the other  12 have crop Canons ranging from the XTi to the 7D.   
Canon must be doing something right with their "crappy" sensors.

No. You didn't discern what he was saying. I could simply give the answer, but just reread your answer and neuro statement and you'll discern the simple comment.

What no sense of humour on the board?  You did notice the smiley?
 I understood that what  Neuro meant to say was that a Camera is not "just" a metal box with a sensor inside.
Or possibly is more than just a metal box with a sensor inside.
