Lenses / Re: Cheap fisheye for canon full frame?

there is the lensbaby fisheye: http://lensbaby.com/optics-fisheye

Rather inexpensive, might buy one myself in time...

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Panning shot - settings on 1dx case
« on: April 22, 2013, 02:46:49 AM »
As i dont own neither a 1Dx nor a 24-70, i can only argue on the theoretical side. But as you shoot a car (a rather large object with some background to see the pan) at a very small aperture, i would focus manually. I'd set the focus to the hyperfocal distance for f/16 (live view is your friend) and then it should come down to smooth camera movement.
IS is off/panning mode? ;)

this is f*** ****some!

all i hope is that the price is in the 3 digit range ;)

Software & Accessories / Re: PP for realistic look - is DPP the best?
« on: April 17, 2013, 06:46:28 PM »
Not a long time ago there was the dilemma before pressing the shutter release. That was in the anlogue age, where you had to choose the right roll of film before the real action. ISO, temperature, color style and so on.
I am very happy these times are over - as a student, film was too expensive and too slow for learning.

Now, all these decisions must be made afterwards, and as many have pointed out, something as "right" or "real" is rather hard to get.
(Some presets that try to imitate all these films would be nice ;) )

But anyway, any decent RAW converter should be able to give you the results you wish, but clearly DPP, being from the camera-dev, has the ability to render a RAW similar to the jpg you can view on the camera.

But that is, again, not "realistic" or anything.

give the tokina 11-16 a shot. its a nice lens, and also a fast one. as they did lately a version II (better coatings, nothing more) you find the version I at a very good price ;)

pair it with the 40mm or 60mm macro and the 85/1.8 and... that would be my kit for extensive hiking ;)

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: White balance for moonlight
« on: April 13, 2013, 05:52:31 AM »
last summer, i shot some moonlit landscape, LR says 4381 for a pleasing slightly cold look. Tested 4100, rather frigid ;)

That WB setting greatly improved the moonlit shots that I was concerned about. What was your tint setting in LR?

i used -14 (was a compromise between the green grass and the grey mountains)

Lenses / Re: near future lens size and resolution

my thoughts for this matter:

1) the sensor-flange distance is only a problem for UWA's, not teles. To get smaller lenses, only DO helps significantly, where advanced tech might reduce the flaws.

2) If you get 100MP, then on rather large sensors (fullframe and maybe crop) due to physical limitations. But as FF sensors, or even bigger sensor will always exist because of DOF, the size of the big whites will not change, but as we've seen before, the next round might be again a bit ligther. If a lens is built for a smaller sensor, then it is of course smaller or faster.
Although, higher megapixels also have some draw backs: diffraction, noise, filesize and others, where the first can only be countered with better (and therefore bigger&heavier) lenses with build tolerances so small that they cost again a fortune.

My prediction goes only as far as the next (real) generation, where i hope to see a clumsy big megapixel studio body with superb IQ at native ISO but nothing much beyond, and the 1DXII 5DV, 6DIII will have a slight increase in MP count, but some 2 stops more DR&ISO.

Software & Accessories / Re: Bag while I am a "tourist"
« on: April 10, 2013, 07:42:39 AM »
i use for slightly less gear (600D ungripped with 24-105, 40, 85 1.8, 2 lensbabies, sigma 150, 580xII, cullmann nanomax 200T and batteries, cpl and stuff) a Lowepro Stealth Reporter 300AW, and it just fits.
This bag is all fine and even has a built-in raincoat ;)
Did many walks with it, also in the mountains. if this is my only pack, i tend to replace 1-2 lenses with snacks or so ;)
Although, fully loaded it is already quite heavy...

For your gear, id get the 400 or even 550 version.

hey, very cool interview/mini-doc!

what was your set up tripod-wise?

color-management?
RAW footage?

An IS-Lens seems too trivial, its not a game changer in my eyes...

Lenses / Re: What next?

ask your archive for preferred focal lengths&apertures.
Are you happy with the DOF your lenses offer?

Portrait works calls (in my eyes) also for a 85mm prime.

I shoot events mostly with the 24-105 because i don't have yet a second body...

Lenses / Re: Future of STM and USM
« on: March 20, 2013, 04:29:44 AM »
As i do not have a STM body but the Shorty McFourty, i'm not totally happy with the STM thingy, at least not for stills.
The main problem is MF, there is a delay and it just does not feel right, the worst thing is to change from MFD to infinity: the STM is too compared to any lens where i can manually pull the focus.

I hope that this STM stuff doesn't grow too much, because it's not the best thing for still photographers, and any decent videographer uses anyway a followfocus and prefers therefore full MF lenses.

So, please keep USM in the high grade lenses and STM in the consumer stuff (=

Technical Support / Re: Aperture/Shutter speed/ISO
« on: March 18, 2013, 04:06:44 AM »
Oh how I praise the digital age! All I did was understanding the concept of DOF, and after that I played around with Av/Tv and I got a feel for ISO performance (on my rebel: up to 400 is good, 800&1600 are acceptable if not printed).

What also helps is to team up with someone, I have an uncle who started photographing way back in the analogue age, so he has all the knowledge i crave for (=

From a mathematical point of view, its a single equation with three unknowns, so the solution is only a relation between the three unknowns.

If you hit the limits of your gear ISO- or shutterspeed-wise: always remember that you can easily underexpose 1-2 stops (if shot in RAW) and push it back to normal in post. On the other side (too much light) it's a bit worse, overblown highlights are more critical.

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / Re: Batteries or Charger fault?
« on: March 13, 2013, 10:15:16 AM »
wikipedia tells me that the 40D uses lithium ion batteries - and these babies go downhill after 2 years/500 cycles (rule of thumb ;) )

So a new one might not really solve the problem as this two year limit begins when it leaves the factory.
Try to find out the production date...
