Lenses / Re: Please give me an advice for an prime lens 300/400mm

Hmmmm.....

Thats tricky for me.
Yes, an 500mm would be my first choice. But a new 500mm II is to expensive for me. I have been looking for one some weeks ago, but the 500mm lenses, where I am sure, that the product is ok, is still beyond 8500-9000€ (2-3 years old and signs of usage).
(I learned from an mistake I made some years ago, buying an 70-200mm 2.8 IS from an photographer, where the Is was not working correct and I had to invest another 600€). If you know an serious seller, tell me.

I like to shoot birds and other animals that are not near to me, so the longer the focal lenght is, the better it is.

I tried the 400mm II DO on monday in combination with the 1.4x extender in an shop. But the AF did not work proper with my 7D (long time of hunting for sharpness) the 6D was much faster. And I was allowed to use the 300mm 2.8 with and without the 1.4x extender. The 300mm 2.8 is a dream. An super image quality, but only 300mm... The shop assistent told me not to use an 2x extender, as the picture quality will go down al lot.

So there is still an big "?", what to do... 6500€s or more are still a  lot of money for me

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: The empire will strike back....

We heared in Japan, Sony is almost ready with the 36 megapixel successor of the Alpha 7.
There are some rumors, Sony will increase the MP to 53 million. Other rumors will have heared Sony works on an much faster autofocus system and on an visibly better DR and overall image quality.

I use my Canon lenses on my daughters new alpha 7II. And it works fine. looks a bit odd with an big white lens on an small black cam.
And one think we realised: Pay attention to dust an small water drops if you change the lens at skiing.

Lenses / Please give me an advice for an prime lens 300/400mm
« on: February 14, 2015, 02:43:55 PM »
Hi Guys!

As my children have grown up now, I can invest more time in my hobby. So I am looking for an mide-sized "L" prime lens to shoot animals.
I saw the 300mm II 2.8 L an the 400mm 4 DO II. For the 300mm I would suggest buying an 2x III extender, for the 400mm an 1.4 III extender.

Which combination would you prefer - if you look at the lens image quality?

The cameras I would use with the lens would be the 6D and the 7D MK 1.

Does anybody own the new 400mm DO IS II and can tell me, if this lens is as sharp as the 300mm?

Greeting from the white Tyrol

EOS Bodies / Re: Big Announcements Coming Next Week [CR3]
« on: January 28, 2015, 08:43:49 AM »
Rumors from Japan: There is an discussion between Sony-fans and Canon-fans about the coming high MP cameras. A lot of war between them. On thing appeared often: Price of the Alpha 7R successor is rumored about  2500€ (range 2100-2800€), the Canon price will be definitively much higher, some say double the price of the Sony body. But no one expects an high-fps body there.

The 750D will be an big step upward, but the rumors do not see an exeptional rise in IQ, more in MP. Price tag about 900-1000€, but only a few people mentioned the price.

If the high MP Canon body is priced at this height, I hope the specifications of the body will be "prime" too.

Let us see, if my Japanese friends do know more, or if they are just rumoring too...

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 7D Mark II Owners first thoughts
« on: December 17, 2014, 06:14:58 AM »
If I compare the results of the 7D to my brandnew 7D Mark2, I am diappointed. The body itself is great (like the 7D is). But I can not see an major improvement in the picture quality.  I can see highlighted (looks "artificial") edges, a lot of noise and mushy colours. On the positive side, the AF is superb and working well on fast objects.
Another point to critisize is the movie mode. The movies are a lot worser, than the 7Ds´. I will decide it after the weekend, if I send it back.

Strange he used the word mushy, that's what I thought only to find out its human error. I thought my first body was no good but it seems that this camera has a steep learning curve. All in all I'm very happy with these bodies.

The "he" is a "she"  ;) and knows how to use the basic functions of this camera.
Since yesterday I am not able to get JPEGS on the card, only RAW files can be stored.
On Friday I go to Munich again and get this problem fixed in the shop.
I know it is not intellegnt to write critics on new products in such an forum, where the critique gets bashed hard by the hardcore fans. But why to be not honest?

Lenses / Re: First Image of the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II Lens

Still thinkin some folks are way over shooting on price here.  And someone else just added evidence regarding the suspicions pre-release of the 16-35 f4.  $1200 steal in my opinion. 7D2, same thing.  Everyone was thinkin $2500, and it came at $1799.  I'm still saying this will be closer to $2k. Seems most everyone here feels the Sig or Tammy 150-600 is a much better value than a $3k 100-400.  The current model is being gobbled up at $1699, I just don't think they would so radically abandon an already well-established price range.  If this comes out at $3k, I'll buy the SIg Sport instead, and I think a not-so-insignificant amount of others will follow suit.  Canon didn't price the 7D2 out of the target market. They won't do that to this lens either.  But I will be happy admit I'm wrong if it turns out I am  ;D

Hello PureClassA!

You are right, many of us were expecting the 7D2 at about 2500€/$. This was a big surprise (a positive one for me). My contacts from Japan are irritated, why they all were wrong. The inner circle of the rumor board (they call themself as insiders (maybe they are working for Canon)), were a little bit shocked. There were many scenarios discussed. One of this is, that they were all foolished by an "insider" who made an joke. Another scenario was, that an "Canon-Foe" positioned an faked rumor. Another one, that Canon decided to cut off features from the 7D2, that were firstly contained in the Cam (e.g. Wifi, or an higher resolution sensor.). This last scenarion would made have sense, if Canon did an market analysis and realised, that an 2.5k Cam would not be accepted by the mass of possible customers. So, cutting off features would make sense.

And now, rurmors from Japan say, that this lens will be cheaper than first rumored. Maybe, the announcements of 2 possible competitors (Sigma, Tamron), changed their market strategy too and they will announce it cheaper than calculated.

We will see in some days.

EOS Bodies / Re: EOS 6D Mark II to Move Upmarket? [CR1]
« on: October 14, 2014, 05:25:24 PM »
I wrote some weeks ago, that this could come true.
Friends in Japan see the 6D successor priced around 2000-2200€ and the 5DIII successor around 3500-4000€. The lower prices are the most named one, but the higher ones are rumored too...
Latest rumores for 6DII: Better AF system, more AF points, faster (1-2 fps), 1 double cross sensor, but no AF at f8.
MP count is just incremental increasing 20->22, 22-> 24(25) MP.  No mention about stunning low light capability. 6DII with better video quality.

All rumors are still rumors, as my friends saw the 7DII with a 24MP sensor. But Canon decided to use the 20MP, not the other tested 24MP.

I am interested in the Sigma 150-600/5,0-6,3 DG OS HSM.
Does anybody of you own this lens?
How is the AF and the image quality of this lens >400mm?

I am photographing with the common 100-400 Canon lens, somtimes with an converter on. But then the quality sucks a lot. Is the Sigma better in the high tele area?

EOS Bodies / Re: Multilayer Sensors are Coming From Canon [CR2]
« on: October 08, 2014, 05:17:50 PM »
Actual rumored in Japan: Next high end body will be a superb successor. No mention about which body it is. Clear seems to be, that this sensor technology enters in Canons high end line. A definitively clear plus will be added on the current price.
The rumored detailed specifications are still not really believable. They think that there are 2-3 bodies mixed up: 22-50MP, 8-20fps, clear iso up to 51000, AF speed halved, better battery ... The 1DX successor is rumored around 20MP.
But: No Canon fanboy knows exactly what will be inside.
Before the Photokina, Japenese forums rumored 24MP and 10fps and clear pictures at 6400ISO for the 7DII.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 80D????
« on: October 02, 2014, 04:21:33 AM »
I am interested in an 70D successor too. In normally well informed Japanese Canon-fan-boys forums there are actually no special rumors on an 80D. Girlfriend wrote, that the release date could be Xmas 2015 or spring 2016, as Canon is in fear of an small sales break down of the 7DII, if they release an 80D.
Rumored!: 19+ AF points (same system as 7DII), no F8 Autofocus, 7-8 pictures/s, better AF with L lenses, improved 20,2 MP sensor (less noise).

But, as Canon has an strict information policy, there could appear an 80D in next summer too... Who knows?

Added:
And there are first rumors (!) of an 6DII fullframe entry Camera. About 22 MP, more AF points (no number rumored), same good low-light performance as 6D, little bit faster AF system, ~5-6 fps, ~20 raw shots buffer, no F8 AF. Built quality as 6D. No flashlight built in. price 500$ more than 6D, new battery system as 7DII

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon Says Higher Resolution Sensors Are Coming Soon
« on: September 26, 2014, 03:29:02 AM »
It is good that Canon will respond on existing and coming competitors. I heared from girlfriends in Japan that there will be an small revolution in Mirrorless Cameras in 2015. All big Camera producer have realized that the market likes small and capable Cameras.
The autofocus system of coming ML Cams will be upgraded and an new generation of high MP sensors will appear. With better low light capacities. Rumored are a 24MP "low light" sensor and an better 36MP sensor (DR, noise) and maybe an big MP sensor around 50MP to compete the MF market. The lens problem has been acknowledged and there will appear better high-end lenses in 2015 & 16.

From Canon is said, that the next M... Camera will be much better, around 24MP and faster at AF. Some say, the AF system of the 70D will be built in. Price much higher than the exisitng M2.
Nikon will do the same on its 1 series.

Sony is working on an visbly faster AF system to be mounted on the A7 series successors. Heared that there will be an very significant update in the beginning of 2015.
There are some AF systems in testing, I heared of an combination of an area of very fast AF points (field area like 7D coverage) and an not so fast, but nearly fully covering AF area.

I would be glad, if Canon will be willed to produce an up to date mirrorless Camera.
I know, many of you like the big SLRs. But the majority of persons likes an light and small, but very capable camera (optimally:, integrated in their handy). As listened on Photokina, the MLs camera market will be one of the most important in the next years.

EOS Bodies / Re: A New EOS Pro Body With 46mp Next Month? [CR1]
« on: September 19, 2014, 04:07:58 AM »
Back from Photokina. The show was interesting, third party manufacturers announced a lot of accessories that will be helpful in future. New lenses (Sigma) e.g. One think to criticice: Each second person who talks about the 7DII praises the IQ of this cam. I asked some of them, how many shots they took with this new Cam. But NO one did. They just looked at a few pictures, release in the www...  ::)
Some rumors from US and asian visitors: In the near and far next month there will be some new bodies announced. A mid priced competitor to the D810 with an much better AF system and a new sensor (no recycled one with a little bit more MP). Low light noise will be improved. And an high end body with superior features and an much higher price than the 1Dx. No details on exact improvements. But it will be an stellar successor to the 1Dx. Two Asians rumored that there will be an separation of the high end line, features like the current 1DX and another body, focussing on IQ.
And that there is an entry FF camera with an extended AF system in development, around 20MP, more AF points... maybe an 6D successor, focused on AF system, as the IQ is very good.
Other brands will release new technology too: Sony will get an big competitor in the next years. They realised that their lens line is a big weakness. New highend Sensors are "in the wild" testing, and will be released soon.  Nikon tries to pimp up the D7100.
