EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: M RAW or "full" RAW on a Canon 6d?
« on: May 14, 2013, 06:36:15 AM »
Good question because why using an inferior raw file?
The purpose of getting the most of a picture is lost!

Some good explanations from Canon:
http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/education/infobank/image_compression/file_types_raw_sraw_and_jpeg.do

Hope it helps,

To be fair, the comparison is ... unfair!

You are comparing jpeg straight from Canon SL1 to Raw file processed in Adobe Photoshop CS5 with manual White Balance set up for the Nikon 3200 (that what exif of full file say).

There is no doubt the Nikon D3200 produce good Raw files but for this type of Camera, it is unlikely the user will purchase Photoshop and spend a lot of time tweaking them.

This is a good example of bias.

Comparing real life jpeg with tweaked Raw.

Result seems quite good and with the 40mm, it could nearly be a nice street camera.

I purchased an Olympus TG for underwater activities, be on the beach and pass it to kids without fears :-[
My sun killed my G10 during vacation so now it is a great cheap alternative.

PowerShot Cameras / Re: Any rumors about the G16?
« on: March 07, 2013, 11:49:33 AM »
Hi
It is highly unlikely that G16 will have a new sensor.
Usually Canon use the same sensor in the G series for 2 years whether it is new version or not.
G15 is just new and I bet G16 will have only cosmetic change and minor improvements if it comes this year.

Anyway, it is very expensive for what it is and at the moment, the best deal is for sure the G1X. For roughly the same price, you get a big sensor, articulate screen and great Image quality (if you can survive with an ugly camera :) ).
The “G2X” may be around the corner but it will be more expensive (according to new Canon price policy, to be good, it HAS to be expensive  :( ).

Hi,
I would sell it and purchase a G15 or G2X (not yet here).
This would be for short notice trip when you don’t want to carry all the bulky stuff :-[
and you just have G15 with you everywhere  :) allowing you to get good shot at any time ;D.

There is 99% probability that 60D will collect dust for years and lose any value.
You will use it only for very risky trip (beach, mud, storm…) and G15/G2X will do nearly as well.
So sell it before 70D is out.

I don’t consider EOS M as I found the AF really really slow and lightweight is not an argument anymore. Much prefer G series.

Software & Accessories / Re: Oddest kit purchase?
« on: January 04, 2013, 04:55:14 AM »
Some years ago I was visiting Florida and the Everglades.

I did a bike tour in the middle of Alligators, snakes and other funny animals.

All I had was a Canon G9 which was a bit limited to shot the big ones in the pond below.
I was not brave enough to come closer :-\

So I used binoculars that I placed in front of the lens. It is a bit tricky to setup but I got some “decent” picture :D

For a European, it a bit surprising that you are warned that coffee is hot at McDona.. but they let you ride a bike in the middle of alligators and snakes without a word about danger ???

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon 5D Mark iii + 50 1.4 ii?
« on: January 03, 2013, 05:00:54 AM »
First, you are extremely lucky to have a girlfriend like that :)

If you have no budget, I would go 40mm 2.8 for 150$ and offer her some flowers ;)

You will keep it for years (the 5D3 ;) ) so have plenty of time to decide which lens is right.
I would save a bit and go for a 24-105, even second hand.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon T4i or wait for T5i?
« on: December 27, 2012, 04:49:49 AM »
I would go for a good offer on a 650D / T4i now (sales time). It is a camera with very good value. You can purchase a nice lens (15-85 or 17-55) that you will use with the following one also. I don’t see it renewed before summer time and it will be more expensive that T4i now.

I don’t see canon launching a much better sensor in T5i before the release of 70D / 7D2.

So if T5i comes soon, it might get a slight increase in FPS, same for video and may be higher pixel count to be on the par with Nikon.

If it comes later and better, you will have lost 6 months of nice pictures if you wait :(

I inherited from my father a Film SLR, don't remenber the brand
1990 Minolta 5000 (Film)
1998 Olympus µ2 (Awesome tiny film camera, got 2))
2003 Minolta Dynax 7 (I loved it) :)
2005 Canon Ixus 50 (Canon story start)
2009 Canon G9
2010 Canon G10
2011 Canon 600D/ T3i
2013 Canon...
I am still wondering if I should go for 7DII or 6D! 5DIII is ideal but a bit expensive for my use :-\

Lenses / Re: 70-300L for Outdoors?
« on: December 07, 2012, 05:59:33 AM »
Hi,
I have the T3i (600D) with the 70-200 F4L IS and find the weight balance perfect.

I tried the 70-300L but I found it very heavy in comparison and as the camera is light, this is very unbalanced.
May be perfect on 7D.
Image quality is great but i would advise you try it on YOUR body before buying.

Canon General / Re: soon to be a 'Canon/DSLR newbie' here!
« on: December 03, 2012, 09:36:58 AM »
I did have the same decision to make last year.

I purchased the 600D (T3i) with the 18-55 kit and a 70-200 F4 L is.

I was using Minolta SLR for long. Then moved to Canon G9 then G10.
What I can say is that I have been very disappointed by the lack “pleasure” to use the 600D. I found it not easy to use if you want to setup manually.
The image quality is very good, with the 70-200L you get quality you don’t even think the sensor is capable of :D. The lens make the difference.
In the price range, the 7D is a bit bulky and heavy. The 5D2 does not have a built in flash.
I would definitively go for 60D unless you are doing a lot of video (for video, 650D is better).

The replacement should arrive in a few month but I suspect the price of the new model will be much higher :(.
So now, I would get the best deal on 60D to get a very good camera.
If there is some cash left, the 17-55 is just amazing. Try to get a good second hand one.
Otherwise, the 18-135 is a very good all-purpose travel lens.

Anyway, welcome to this forum.

EOS Bodies / Re: POLL: With what features would you consider the 6d?
« on: September 19, 2012, 09:06:41 AM »
I own a 600D and what prevented me to go for 5DMk2 was the lack of built in flash.
Failed again!  :(
So for a hobby user, not sure the 6D is versatile enough without flash for fill in.
I don't understand why Canon think flash is only for dummies  :'(
May be I underestimate the low light capability of FF.
Concerning AF, this does not upset me as future test will tell how it performs. I believe it will be on par. We can't expect 5D3 performance here.

Lenses / Re: Considering the 70-200 f4 is for my next lens
« on: August 29, 2012, 03:15:43 AM »
I have the 70-200 f4 IS and the image quality is just amazing. I tried the 70-300L at a Canon exhibition. It is a bit heavier but it is shorter (easier to pack in a bag). Image quality seems equivalent to the 70-200 and if I would do it again, I would definitively go for the extra reach of the 70-300.
