EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS-1D X Delays
« on: April 09, 2012, 10:41:44 PM »
It can't be because of accessories... I mean, the 5D3 is out and the gps, wireless and web the grip is nowhere to be found. Dammit... Get it out already. My girl will be born soon and she was conceived after the 1Dx announcement....

Haha, Internet Gold Sire.
Hats off to you, you made my day.

EOS Bodies / Re: Should I buy a 5D3 or 1D4?
« on: April 07, 2012, 12:18:20 PM »
Anyone considering 1d4 and 5d mk iii instead of  the 1dx?

Yeah I am considering a used 1D mkIV for my newly found bird photography hobby. It is insanely addictive, the push to get that best avain shots of bird is alluring.

Need to save money for 1DMkIV, can't afford 1DX with longer glass.
a 1DMkIV + 400 2.8 IS with 2X and 1.4X TCs, along with my 70-200 will serve me okay for some years I presume.
Wish I had the money to get a 1D4. Right 550D is not cutting it for BIF lol.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: D800 sensor from Sony
« on: April 06, 2012, 02:15:09 PM »
Off course they had a deal. How do you think Nikon is going to put a seemingly weird format in their top of the line DSLR, which incidentally is made by Sony only(from last what I read).

Sony is going to make money selling that XQCD format cards. So win win for them

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: I've compared both
« on: April 06, 2012, 02:10:37 PM »
The bottom line is that the 7D's resolution is slightly better than the 5DM3's while the 5DM3's noise level is slightly lower. After applying NR and post-sharpening to both images, they are barely indistinguishable. This holds true from ISO 100 to ISO 3200.

BTW, this test result is not too different from a similar test I did with the 7D, 5DM2 and 1D Mark IV. This is what you should expect from the 5DM3's sensor which is almost identical to the pixel resolution of the 5DM2.

I did an equivalent test with the 7D and 5DII and came to exactly the same conclusion.

I think another factor which needs to be kept in mind is that when you actually crop a FF image, especially when shooting wildlife or Birds etc...

Now do keep in mind that light follows the inverse square law for luminosity, so the correct exposure for the same subject on a FF with 500mm lens is screwed up *if* you decide to crop for 1.6x factor.

True if you meter the whole scene (e.g. evaluative), but usually I use spot metering for birds/wildlife, meaning the exposure is set primarily by the subject.  In fact, I'm really looking forward to the 1D X's AF-point-linked spot metering capability.

Precisely but I think spot/eval/partial/* metering is moot when you are in manual mode, no?
Atleast that is what I used to think was true for low end DSLRs.

Is it not the same for 1D bodies?

EOS Bodies / Re: 1DX sample RAW images

There you go - http://www.davidcheok.com/storage/EOS1dXRAW.zip
The zip contains RAWs at 3200, 6400 and 12800 ISO.

Please create a mirror as original photog's site may slow down.

But question is, is support available for 1DX raw files?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon 5D3 vs 7D for birding thoughts
« on: April 06, 2012, 02:51:39 AM »
I think another factor which needs to be kept in mind is that when you actually crop a FF image, especially when shooting wildlife or Birds etc, you have to keep exposure int mind too.

When you use a lens of 500mm Focal length on a 7D you are using it at 800mm. So, what happens is that your metering and luminosity is spot on at 800 mm because that is what the camera sees i.e the real distance and so do you from your viewfinder.

Now do keep in mind that light follows the inverse square law for luminosity, so the correct exposure for the same subject on a FF with 500mm lens is screwed up *if* you decide to crop for 1.6x factor.

So definitely there is a trade off between resolution and noise. Add to this that you have to decrease your shutter speeds further on a higher density APS-C sensor to get sharp images.

I think 1DMkIV with a 1.4TC is still a much better combo than anything out there. But that is just my opinion :).

Please feel free to correct me, if I am wrong somewhere.

Thanks,

Lenses / Re: List of rumored lenses
« on: April 03, 2012, 07:25:53 PM »
I am an amateur photographer and recently got very interested in Bird photography.
Right now I have very constrained gear in a 550D, 70-200 F4L IS.

I do not like the 18MP sensor 550D has as it is too noisy above 800 ISO along with horrible noise in shadows.
Since Canon 7D has the same sensor, I do not want to buy 7D. Waiting for 7D mk II with high hopes is the only thing I can do.

On lens part, I thought of buying a 100-400 L but then decided not to seeing rumors about the new 100-400 floating around.

Is it wise to pony up and save for next 100-400 L ?

Thanks,

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 7Dmk2 any rumors??
« on: April 02, 2012, 12:52:20 PM »
I am an amateur but I am a fairly technical person.
Recently I got interested in Bird photography and find my T2i lagging. Sure I have a just 70-200 F4 L IS, which I am thinking of upgrading to 100-400 L.

I have noticed that because of such high pixel density getting a sharp shot of even slow moving birds in flight is extremely challenging. 7D has same sensor but a much much better AF, so I guess it suffers from same disease of "triple your usual shutter speeds to get crisp action freezing shots".

Above 800 ISO, you get extremely noisy images even after I dial in +1.5-2.0EV on my T2i. This is very disappointing as most of the fine shots I can see happen during early hours or near twilight.

Canon 5D Mark III is exciting but then I will loose the reach of 1.6x crop factor, which is not what I want.

IMHO, 18MP is just too much for a crop sensor.

My wishlist for a 7d MkII will be:-

1. 14-15 MP
2. Improved autofocus
3. 8fps being retained.
4. Configurable DOF button like 5d Mk III.
5. Usable ISO till 6400.

I know usable ISO on a crop sensor is severely hampered. So my guess is perhaps Canon will make next 7D successor a 1.3x crop to give the much needed ISO boost.

Wishful thinking ...eh? :)

I noticed that electronic level is visible also in viewfinder. Custom function, by using AF points.
Did not see anyone mentioning this before.

Sound very good.

It asks for login.
Can you please host it on a site from where we can download without registering.

Would love to work with RAW file in DPP.

EOS Bodies / Re: 40MP Canon that's not the 5D3?
« on: February 08, 2012, 01:33:33 PM »
Well this is some good news.
Glad 5dMKIII may be withing 22MP. We need class leading clean ISO upto 25600( wishful thinking) and 7D'esque AF in next 5D iteration.

Well since we are on the topic, I am praying for a 7DMkII with 14-15MP with approx a stop less ISO from 1DX. I would buy it in a jiffy.
Enough of grainy pics at ISO 100 on my 550D sensor.

4300$ is a big lol'eth price.
2000$ and it will sell like hot cakes.

if at 4300$, Canon can kiss goodbye it to its fortunes.

EOS Bodies / Re: No 1Ds IV? [CR1]
« on: November 10, 2010, 04:47:23 AM »
say Canon makes 500$ profit on every 1DsMk IV body and just 200$ profit ona each 5d Mk III.

Now, number of 5d MkIII buyers = 50x(1DsMk IV buyers).

So effectively canon makes 10000$ profit for every 500$ profit it makes on 1Ds Mk IV.
So it is logical for Canon to listen to a 5dMKIII demand.

But what if Canon makes a $3000 profit on each sold 1DsMk IV body and only $30 on each 5d Mk III? How do you know?

Correct I would not know but then this means.
If Canon can get same 1D features(or a lil less) into a 5d and make 150$ as profit instead of 30$, you bet Canon will get more money.

See this is a simple rule.

More demand = more profit.
Also, lesser profit per unit with gazillion sales is better than more profit per unit with paltry sales.

No rocket science you see :).

Why a killer 5dMkIII is better than a High cost 1DsMk IV?
To understand this a small math will help -

say Canon makes 500$ profit on every 1DsMk IV body and just 200$ profit ona each 5d Mk III.

Now, number of 5d MkIII buyers = 50x(1DsMk IV buyers).

So effectively canon makes 10000$ profit for every 500$ profit it makes on 1Ds Mk IV.
So it is logical for Canon to listen to a 5dMKIII demand.

And honestly, they make more profit via lens sales than with bodies. They should try to keep customers loyal to Canon glass and perhaps pull in few more from Nikon camp with a well balanced 5d Mk III.

Thanks,
