Portrait / Re: My photos look so dull
« on: May 20, 2013, 10:54:44 PM »
A chance to try some post processing. Here's my attempt. I enjoyed seeing what others have done. I'm always trying to improve my skills in post processing. It feels like a battle I can never win. I've come to realize that its not easy at all. I should probably do some workshops to get some tips from some pros.

Lenses / Re: Why The EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x Delay?
« on: November 13, 2012, 07:55:54 PM »
I was thinking that it would be nice to have the 200-400 f4 an an every now and then use lens, but that's not going to happen if its going to cost $10K. I thought it would be closer to the price of the 70-200 II or 24-70 II.

Speaking of that. I see that these lens types of lens are commonly used for sports, but who pays for these pictures to justify the price of these lens? Especially when it comes to wildlife.

Pricewatch Deals / Re: EF 24-70 f/4L IS & EF 35 f/2 IS Preorders
« on: November 06, 2012, 01:43:08 PM »
You know what, I may just abandon my 24-105 for this lens. Of course, I'll have to try it before I buy it, and I won't be buying it right away. I'll wait for now. The high price means that there's no rush.

« on: November 05, 2012, 09:25:29 AM »
Since I already have the 24-105, I'll wait and see how this new lens compares to it. If its noticeably sharper, has better IS, not crazily expensive and doesn't suffer from lens creep (my 24-105 does), then I may switch to it. I also have the 70-200 f4 IS, so I don't mind switching lens as needed.

I'm going to stick to my original plan when it comes to lens, which is to buy the cheaper F4 zooms and supplement with fast primes (1.4 and faster).

Canon General / Re: Canon's MAP Pricing Goes Into Full Effect Today
« on: November 01, 2012, 08:32:18 PM »
Here I thought that Canon would drop the price to be more competitive, and hence push me over the edge to get one. I was so close. I'll know better next time. I'll get the 5D Mark IV or 1DX Mark II on day one. What's the point of waiting a year if I still have to pay full price (or close to full price) when a new model will be released in the next 3-4 years? I'll start saving from now.

I think that this is a sign. At one point I was thinking about waiting until the 5D4 is released or some other great camera. However, the lower price tags was starting to tempt me. I'm already spent enough money on other things for this Christmas, but I was looking forward to picking one up around Feb. next year. Now that the price has gone back up, I'm just going to sit this one out and keep using my 40D. Or maybe I can get a used 5DII.

This does not make me happy. Looks like I won't be buying a new camera this year afterall.

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 24-70 f/4L IS Coming [CR3]
« on: October 30, 2012, 04:09:31 PM »
My current lens strategy is to go with the cheaper f4 lens. They aren't very fast, but they are still very good. If I need faster I usually need really fast or really shallow DOF. For this I resort to a prime lens that gets me 1.4 or faster. However, these days I've been thinking of dropping going even faster as a base, from f4 to 2.8, I like my 100mm L.

An f4 version huh! I'm curious as to how it will compare to my 24-105L. If its noticeably better then I'll switch, if not, what's the point. Ideally I'd want the 24-70L with IS.

I prefer 1/40 or above..."IS" is useless in this case.
What does 1/40 have to do with IS? Do you know what IS is used for? Do you never shoot anything with a slower shutter speed?

Software & Accessories / Re: Need great Photo editing monitor
« on: October 25, 2012, 06:13:24 PM »
When it comes to Dell, one should understand that their monitors and their computers (PCs) are two very different things. I don't like dell computers. I use to have one in college, and I use them at work. I'm not a fan. However, I do own a Dell Ultrasharp monitor. I got the 2407 WFP (wide gamut) monitor some years ago when I, after doing lots of web development, realized that colors actually mattered. Since then I picked up photography. I still use this monitor today and its very good.

If you are serious about your colors, then a Dell Ultrasharp IPS display will give you great results. My only gripe with my monitor is at the very end of the dark spectrum. If you are working with details in the very dark shadows, and this work is super important (or you just demand the best), then you'll want to get a better monitor. Anything else and this monitor is great.

I plan to get a new monitor, probably by the end of next year. At that time I'll get a NEC or Eizo. The only reason why I don't upgrade now is because the photography that I'm currently doing is for myself. That won't stay the same come the end of next year.

Of course, I use a tool (xRite) to calibrate my monitor, plus calibrate my camera for Lightroom and Photoshop, etc.

EOS Bodies / Re: PhotoPlus Announcements?
« on: October 25, 2012, 02:26:54 PM »
Hmmm... I've been waiting to hear something great, but I haven't heard anything as yet. Did photoplus not start already, or is it that Canon has nothing to show other than their already released and announced products and their 42% loss in profits? The 5D2 was a great camera when it came out, with the exception of the AF. The 5D3 fixed that, but costs more after four years later. The market has changed over four years. Where's my high resolution camera with great AF and dynamic range... even if the ISO is capped at 6400?

EOS Bodies / Re: Are there 39mp & 50mp+ Test Bodies in the Wild? [CR1]
« on: October 22, 2012, 12:16:05 PM »
No problem there - people spending $9k on a camera are likely to be able to afford a fast computer and enough storage space, too. And besides that, the eos cameras usually have a m-raw and s-raw mode, so s-raw from a 50mp cam might be 22mp just like on the 5d3 :-)
Hehehe! I was wondering if anyone was going to comment on my statement. Yeah, my computer is nearing the end of its life for today's heavy graphics work. Its an overclocked quad core (3.0GHz) and I added a SSD earlier this year to boost performance. I'd surely build another one around the time I get a high MP camera. You do have a good point about the different modes. I never cared to use the smaller RAW formats since I'm currently capped at 10MP (40D).  :P

I'm curious to see what Canon has to show later this week.
