I salute!

Also don't overlook monitor calibration like Spyder Pro. That will help alot for color consistency and exposure adjustments.

practice with one strobe first, that will help you get started one step at a time. By the time you feel already limited creatively with just one flash unit, then it's time to move on to two (then practice with it), then three. Three should be fine for most of us, but I know a few togs who'd want more Speedlites all the time (they borrow, beg, etc to get more Speedlites).

Buy or borrow some books like "Understanding Flash Photography" by Bryan Peterson and there's another called "A Speedliter's Handbook" by Syl Arena. I've been using SLR's since '85 but I do admit I only discovered that there are actually two types of exposures (ambient and flash) only a couple years ago. LOL.

I finally pulled the trigger and bought the 600EX-RT. I've been playing around with it and I hope my perception is correct but I do think the 600EX is doing a better job with flash metering than the 430EX II. I've always longed for a distance scale while I only had the 430 (the 430 only showed the max distance). I just blew my work bonus check with $5 to spare for the new flash  ;D

@AudioGlenn Yes, I have now experienced what you meant (ease of use). In case you missed it, CR let out a story this month about a 430 that's gonna have RT in early 2013.

I'm still keeping my ST-E2 until I can get a couple more 600's or 430 RT's (see, it never ends, never ends). But that's gonna be more than a year away.

Thanks all for the advice. I'm very happy.

Thanks for the reply and the valuable info! I'm leaning towards the 600EX - also one thing I'm attracted to the 600EX is the manual external flash metering, which the 430EX II does not have.

It is an expensive piece of equipment - I could buy one for CAD $525 ... is that an okay price? Plus 4 new rechargeable AA batteries and a Stofen Omnibounce. Almost 600 bucks. Whew. Anyway it's Christmas. LOL.

Lighting / Purchase advice for second Speedlite

Hello everybody.

I'm in the market for a second speedlite (for more creative flash lighting), and I have a somewhat tough choice to make.

I have a 430EX II and an ST-E2. I am looking at getting a 600EX-RT as my new flash instead of another 430EX II.

1. I read around the net and did not find any reference to IR triggering with the 600EX. Can it only be triggered by a radio transmitter when it's off the shoe or can it also be fired by a ST-E2 (solo or together with a 430)?

2. Aside from the higher guide number of the 600, is there any other advantage for it over the 430?

I am also thinking that maybe just a second 430EX II will be a more practical choice. Getting the 600 on the other hand may be a good choice if I want to move on to RT.

Looking forward for your great opinion.

Thanks.

Well Leolol's older posts show he is a Canon user who love the Canon ergonomics but is at the point that he would make that decision to cross over to Nikon because going FF and is more particular towards the new sensors. His only problem is now is his Canon glass and have to sell off some glass if he has to switch over. I say retain your old APS-C Canons and sell off your most seldomly used EF glass and try the D800 if it you really believe it will suit your needs. Crossing over brands as we all know is very expensive, but to me if I had the money I would love to buy Nikon D800, Olympus, Sony, and Pentax plus glass. Try to master the D800 and I hope you will be satisfied with it.

Cheers

You can press the AF point select  button then the M.Fn button to toggle AF modes.

There is also an option in the menu to make your AF point warp to the opposite side (I think it's called "continous") after the pointer crosses the outer edges. I find that easier than pressing the direction button to move the AF point to the center and then to the opposite side. I don't have my camera with me so I can't direct you to it.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Help me upgrade my 550d
« on: November 11, 2012, 01:54:11 PM »
If you can make it happen, go for the 5D3. You have to consider the possibility you might have wished that you did get the 5D3 months after you return to Europe and that would probably be stressful.

If budget is a problem, then yes, 7D may be good for you *for now*. You will have a camera with the same sensor and metering system but with more control and useful capabilities than you current body. Think of it as a 550D on steroids (except for the high ISO performance). With the 5D3 the ISO 12800 is usable except for pixel peepers. The new generation Digic 5+ processor makes a big difference.

As all with "big ticket" purchases, there will always be some feeling of buyer's remorse at first but in my case, as cheapskate as I am who would more than likely return stuff for a refund, I never got to regret my 5D3 purchase - it's more than my 7D can do and I am very happy with it. The +$4000  I paid for the body with the battery grip is a distant memory now and I don't miss it anymore (and I only bought the 5D3 last August).

I wish you the best whatever choice you make.

Pricewatch Deals / Re: EF 24-70 f/4L IS & EF 35 f/2 IS Preorders

I'm baffled by the price. But then I guess Canon will make this the replacement for the 24-105. There is no sense that they will co-exist - I think.

About time - perfect for lenses like the 100mm 2.8L IS USM with its hood on for example.

Lenses / Re: New 50 Finally on the Way? [CR1]

I really don't see the need for IS at 50mm.  I don't have the steadiest hands, but I usually have stable enough hands to get off a shot with a 50mm on a crop sensor (80mm) without issue.

I'm sure if the proposed logic for the recently released 24mm 2.8 IS exists... I probably don't have to finish that sentence, right? Anyways, Canon doesn't care what an individual person thinks. If they did, they'd have to release billions of unique products just to satisfy one person who doesn't shoot video or someone who lacks the desire to shoot lower shutter speeds to keep the ISO low in moments where even a human tripod couldn't keep still. I mean uh, who would buy an IS lens that "wide"? You'd be surprised.

I agree - I think I heard in one official Canon video that they are pushing to implement IS when making new lenses. In the last few years (post 2005) have we seen some of Canon's new lenses without IS? 24-70 2.8L is one exception I can only pin down - there might be a little more. But I'm sure the majority of new lenses they have added IS (correct me if I'm wrong).

I have the 50mm 1.8 II and almost bought a 1.4 a month ago, but I tried a few and didn't like turning the focus ring - I thought it felt too scratchy it could double as a percussion instrument. I hope the image and build quality of rumored new lens would be far more better and I'll gladly buy one.

Maybe soon we'll hear of an 85mm 1.8 IS USM after this.
