I'm going to an owl flying display next week with my 5d3 and 70-200 2.8 ii.
They will be reasonably close so I don't need anything longer than 200mm.

I need some help/advice on what settings to use, particularly the af settings.

It will be under tree cover with mixed lighting so raw Is a must.  I was thinking keep the aperture between 2.8 and 5.6 and aim for a shutter of around 1/1000 to freeze them in flight.

The owls will be flying side to side and straight at me.

Any ideas for the af settings or anything else I should consider?

Thanks in advance.

Lenses / Re: Canon 85L II AF speed on 5D III???

I've had my 85 1.2 about a month now. (On 5d3)

Generally going from close to infinity takes ages and is too slow for street work.

However going from 3m to infinity is actually pretty snappy. So prefocusing is key.

I've had reasonable success tracking some pigeons in flight, although admittedly it was slow at initially locking on.

Software & Accessories / Kata revolver
« on: May 02, 2013, 01:02:14 PM »
Does anyone use the new kata revolver bag?

I kinda like the idea of being able to fit 4 primes and a tele and still have easy access plus being able to fit 1 body plus lens.

Any views or opinions?

I'm interested in fitting in a canon 85 1.2 but not sure if it will fit in the "chambers". Anyone know what the largest lens it can fit? Or the internal chamber dimensions?

Can you get another body in the top with no lens attached?

Anyone got any pics showing the chamber with lens in?

Thanks for All responses in advanced.

I bought a used one for £1150 about a month ago. Mint condition except the hood which was battered and scuffed beyond belief.

If they made a 50mm 1.2 with similar quality to their new 35 and under £1k I'd buy it.

I have the sigma 35. focusses like a dream straight out the box. Servo performance is good and no AFMA needed on my 5d3.

I tested both the canon 35L and sigma 35 before purchasing and found the canon to be faster on AF but softer @ f1.4.

I sent it back today. Have asked for a refund.

Not sure ill get another one mail order. Think ill buy one from a shop where I can test it first.
Might be rethinking my wide angle needs because of some poor QC issues I have been reading about the 24 l

I have wide apertures covered from 35mm upwards on my 5d3 therefore have no need for a general purpose zoom such as the 24 105.

What are the best options for covering the wider end? (Ie 24mm and wider)

I generally shoot street. But I want something wide for a bit of wider general purpose and environmental portraits. Definitely want AF

I've recently done the same and upgraded from 7d (+ 60d) to 5dmk iii. Sold my 7d but kept the 60d as I like the flippy screen. I've kept my 17-55 as I like the IS and zoom range for video. Other than that I have been selling all my crop lenses and trading up for better L glass.

Most of the time I leave my samyang 8mm on my 60d. just because its so much fun.

thanks everyone for the messages.

I've sent an email to the shop. I'll definitely return if for another copy. I want it for use @ 1.4 and if the AF is not perfect out the box. I'm not interested. (particularly for £1200!)

Lenses / canon 24L 1.4 ii lemon
« on: March 29, 2013, 06:53:31 AM »
I bought a new canon 24l 1.4 ii last week and found the AF to be wildly inaccurate.

AFMA adjustment of +15 made it better but I still found at anything further away than 50cm it was very hit and miss.

I'm going to send it back for a refund. but I'm wondering if I just got a lemon, or are all canon 24L 1.4 ii like this?
Anyone experience anything similar?

THanks
Alex
