Lenses / Re: I have a weight limit....what would you bring?
« on: May 17, 2013, 05:07:23 PM »
given that you have a full sensor body I would suggest
24-70 or in your case 24-105
70-200
and a TC.

it's your work
you were honest about it being photoshopped instead of trying to pass it as a legit photo
I would not call it photo anymore, rather it's photo based artwork.
Looks good

Canon General / Re: the rebate program... what a sham!

yes many fall for this marketing strategy
Canon is not the only one that uses this strategy.  Macy's for example has been doing this for more than 15 years.

this site should help you decide
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/400v400.shtml
I went with the 100-400.

are you sure it's front focusing?
at 1.4, your DOF can be minimal (depends on the distance of subject)
here is a calculator for you

why f8? Could use f5.6
why ISO 200? using f5.6, you can use iso100
light is a bit on the harsh side, due to time of day and altitude (guessing).  Consider a circular polarizer or a variable nd filter or ideally own both.

Why not use f/8?  I shoot a lot of landscapes and rarely use a larger aperture than f/8 - am usually between f/8 and f/16.

You have to be careful which VND you use as many of them leave colour casts.  yes these can be removed, but you will remove not just the cast, but also other colours at the same time.

using wider aperture(as long as it is sharp enough), you can speed up the shutter and minimize blur due to winds blowing trees around as an example.

it's pretty simple in my opinon.
I shoot with a 50d and 24-70 2.8 so it's hardly a stealth thing
Be courteous, polite, apologetic, and comply regardless of region, country.  I have shot in Japan, across Canada, Mexico, Brazil, across USA.
You are going to get a range of reactions from people, even varying reactions in the same area.
If someone intimidates me, I apologize and put the camera away and walk away.  No shot is worth offending anyone or getting in a fight or a brawl.
Are you earning a living shooting street shots?
I have even deleted the picture in front of the person to show that I am not going to do anything.
If you publish a picture of someone without a release and the subject finds out, they can come after you.  Find a good lawyer.
Easy to defuse a situation.  I am never defensive nor aggressive.  Show respect, apologize, delete the picture if requested, and walk away.

other things to consider
humidity can affect how light travels
distance.  the further away you are from the subject the more light diffraction you will encounter

50d shutter speed up to 1/8000
6d shutter speed up to 1/4000
If you can't freeze action at 1/8000, it's probably not the camera. Look in the mirror for possible answer

so you are saying depreciation bothers you.
5d's target consumer is pro's, who'll buy this cameras to make a living.  They are not going to complain about depreciation because they are making money with the equipment.
You can't afford depreciation, you can't afford the product.
Assume you buy a dress shirt for $50 today, you wear it, and try to sell it in 3 months.  How much do you think you'll get for that shirt?!!! $25?  You would not complain about that because you got your money's worth.
Go out and get your money's worth with the gear you bought.

CPL like mentioned already.
Also a dry bag.  While in hotel/house, where it's around 70 degrees, put your camera in the dry bag (a thin one is preferred as it will adapt to the temperatures more quickly). Pack the camera and head for the slopes. Take the camera out and you should have no condensation.
After you are done for the day, put the camera back in the dry back and head back to the hotel/house. Once in the hotel/house, leave the camera in the bag for about 30 min for the camera temperature get up to room temp. Remove the camera from the dry bag and you should have no condensation.
Same process should be followed when headed to the tropics.

Like asking if you can afford the monthly payments on Porsche 911.
or
if you have to ask, you can't afford it
