Canon General / Re: How come Canon never responds to anything?
« on: October 13, 2012, 09:13:33 AM »
How come Canon, and a lot of big companies never explain or answer any questions.  Why make a new sensor for the 6D when everyone was hoping for the same 5DIII sensor?   Why limit the video compression?  etc. etc..
Are there good reasons or are they just protecting other lines and/or money, as everyone keeps on guessing.

The McDonalds videos are a marketing campaign. McDonalds probably felt that one of their primary issues was problems that potential customers had with food quality, and this ad campaign is trying to address those issues.
Does canon feel that customers have issues with the quality of their equipment? Are they trying to address that through their own marketing? Perhaps, but not currently in such a direct way as this latest McDonalds campaign AFAIK.
Canon has in the past produced "behind-the-scenes" videos on how some of their lenses are produced, but again that was just marketing... the average consumer EF-S 18-55 lenses probably don't receive the same amount of care and attention during their construction.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 70D & 3D Prediction from Japan

I'm surprised that no-one has brought this up yet, but this really sounds like an amalgamation of the 7D and the xxD lines into a single line once again...

Moreover, the EOS 60Da’s Live View mode is equipped with a Silent Shooting feature that eliminates shutter-induced vibration for maximum camera stability when the camera is mounted to a telescope or super-telephoto EF lens.

Enhanced noise reduction on the EOS 60Da sensor offers photographers the ability to experiment with the wide array of ISO settings and increased ISO speeds up to 6400 expandable to 12800.

I don't get the enhancement - enhancement over the 60d or 20da? If this silent shooting mode the same one as on the vanilla 60d it's not exactly silent say in comparison to a Nikon d7000.

Actually, this probably refers to the electronic first curtain that many canon cameras use when shooting in "Live View" mode. It's not necessarily any quieter, but it drastically reduces the vibration when taking a shot and is ideal for use at extreme magnifications (like in microscopy or astrophotography)

(I'm not affiliated with this link in any way, but I do take photo's through microscopes...)

Canon General / Re: Patent - 400-600mm f/2.8-f/4 zoom lens
« on: May 28, 2011, 12:10:43 AM »
Are you sure? My take on the patent is that it is actually a patent for 6 different lens designs. The first 4 are 400mm f2.8 lenses, the next is a 300mm f2.8 and the last is a 600mm f4, all have IS. If you examine the block diagrams they are obviously different optical designs...

Just like how a 300GB hard drive or 8GB CF card are never that much. A real GB is 1024 MB but that makes things complex and not big and round so all storage is approximated to 1GB = 1000MB because that markets better.

Chris

?? It seems to me that 1000MB is 1GB by definition (your argument is like saying that 1024 metres is a kilometre).  ???

Canon General / Re: Patent - EF 50 f/1.4
« on: May 26, 2011, 03:35:23 PM »
It looks like a different optical design, this patent has 8 elements in 6 groups, and the original has only 7 in six groups. It is the elements behind the stop that have changed.

The performance wide open of the current lens is not that great, it suffers from spherical aberation causing halation. The good news is that this patented lens has 2 aspherical elements which might (speculatively) improve the image at 1.4.

While the focusing on my 50mm f1.4 has never bothered me that much (and is still working fine, fingers-crossed)
it is not super accurate and an upgrade to true ring-USM would be welcome. Hopefully if it does come out it won't be too expensive...
