EOS Bodies / Re: 5dmk3 freezes up
« on: April 23, 2013, 01:17:17 PM »
I had that issue with the old firmware only... not the current one.

It could also be a card error or if the lens isn't 100% secure.

PowerShot / Re: SX50 outperforming 5DIII +100-400mm
« on: April 19, 2013, 04:59:32 PM »
Meh, I want to see a comparsion using equivalent focal lengths 210 and 200mm is fine.. but the framing must be exactly the same (subject takes up the same percentage on the sensor). Both images downsampled (never upsampled) to fit here on the site. Any crops (as long as there's no upsampling ) should be fine... ex: 100% on the sx50 and 55% on the 5D mark III (for equivalent sized images.)

other than that it's apples and oranges.

Instead of fill flash just overexpose a bit... especially with her skin and make sure the ground underneath her or just in front of her is reflecting light onto her. (like a reflector or use an actual reflector). Unless using a softbox a fill flash looks like garbage IMHO.

-Some poses are absolutely not flattering and you can only figure it out by doing it... In one photo she's squatting to go to the bathroom it appears ;)

-In one a single leg is behind her where she looks like an amputee.

-In the picture reposted above her arm is being flattened by something making it appear larger than it really is. Try to minimize this. Girls like looking thin.

-Many of the pictures appear to be taken from a low angle... get to eye level or even above eye level looking down to make her appear a little thinner.

-I don't see any close ups of her face? What does she really look like?

-Many shots appear soft or downright out of focus, make sure that shutter speed is at least double the focal length, lock that focus and hold still. With that 50 all you need to do is sway slightly and your focus is gone. You might consider AI Focus/AI Servo.

Not the greatest... I'm assuming the flash that forgot to fire was above your head in order to not create shadows on faces...

Canon General / Re: DxOMark vs. Reality
« on: October 10, 2012, 12:25:42 PM »
Then we go into the "shadows" and there  I select an area and let photoshop with auto contrast calculate pixel values, and if there are any banding, noise. This is the difference in the lower level = DR
blah blah

So you're saying if as a photographer I constantly screw up exposure I should get a Nikon? With the 5dMk III if I come anywhere near correct exposure within a few stops (which is a huge range) then I get a great photo with little noise if any. With the Nikon even if I absolutely nail exposure I'll get noise at higher ISOs without changing shadows AT ALL...

Correctly expose your shots in camera and get back to us about noise.

Nice shots...

but maybe your tens of thousands of photos enraged him and made him disgruntled enough to kill. You know you really need to have your setup done before the talent arrives. ;D

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 5D MK III Focus Hiccup
« on: August 25, 2012, 09:59:53 PM »
I've had this exact problem with Firmware 1.13 on the first day I owned the camera. No lens movement ... nothing... no response at all. This was both with shutter and back button focus. I forget how I ended up fixing it if I removed the battery or changed the to/from AI servo etc... I fiddled with everything trying to get it to work again.

I've yet to duplicate the problem.

Of note: whenever I hit the back button or the shutter it would flash "M focus" on the LCD suggesting that I had the lens in manual focus mode (which I most certainly did not). Plus, if I had it in manual focus mode the shutter/mirror would have actuated, instead the camera simply refused to function as if it couldn't lock focus (but of course it wasn't even trying to focus).

EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: Chuck westfall on the sharpness of the 5dm3
« on: August 20, 2012, 12:57:42 PM »

In camera sharpening on video does happen before compression. It has to; sharpening after compression would require the camera to do another compression pass to save the sharpened data.

My point exactly... Since the 5D Mark III does not have clean HDMI output you get very little in the way of sharpening BEFORE encoding. If you have to sharpen in post then by the very encoding process you just lost data already. Now you have to sharpen and re-compress further reducing quality.

All I want is the option to have some better on camera sharpening before encoding... Or clean output ... pick one.

So let's say I don't want to do any post processing on my video... Why can't I have an option in the menu to sharpen it before the encoding process?

Seems like a logical request to me...

I have a 580 EX II with a pocketwizard... but that's probably excessive

Well on-camera flash is the Devil....

You could have easily made that shot with a $15 reflector.

My nephew, Rebel XT with nifty 50 :)

AHHH I find it so frustrating... I want the resolution of a MF camera (which I cannot afford), I want Canon colors, Canon lenses, Canon controls, and Canon high ISO quality. Why can't Canon deliver... I would literally sell my right kidney on the black market for such a camera.
