Thank you to those who chimed into this thread with their points and suggestions.

In the mean time I have further tested the LP-E4N's and am pleased to report that the lock-ups/freezes I experienced appears to be a thing of the past after a few more days of extensive usage and recharging the batteries on my LE-E4 charger

Whilst I cannot say that I have identified the culprit of the issue with any certainty, I suspect it is the batteries higher capacity which the LP-E4 charger doesn't support that may have caused the camera to freeze initially. oh well....

I recently bought the LP-E4N battery pack to replace the original (LP-E4) I got with the 1DS Mark III. According to Canon, this new battery pack is compatible with the 1D Mark III and IV cameras models:

http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2013/lp-e4n_battery_pack.shtml

I would like to hear from people that are using this battery with these cameras if anyone have experienced the same issue that I am having. I have bought 2 LPE-4N's (new, manufactured in July 2012), and with both batteries the camera will occasionally lock-up. The power will stay on, but the camera is completely freezed and the only way to shot it down is to pull out the battery. When I the insert the battery again it will work as normal for a while. I have had never experienced a similar issue with the LP-E4.

The issue happens sporadically and appears to be completely erratic, at least I have no idea what causes it and I can't reproduce it at will. I have tried different shooting modes (one-shot and AI servo) and drive modes and even lenses.

I made a complete calibration and recharge of the batteries when I bought them on my LC-E4 charger. I am starting to wonder if issue with the new battery pack could somehow be caused by the higher capacity or safety changes to comply with the Japanese standards... At this point it seems to me that it must be a compatibility issue with the new battery, as I have never experienced any issue with my original LP-E4.

Thanks in advance for your feedback to anyone using this camera/battery combination!

Recent sunset shoot from the hillside of the old castle area, Kärnan, overlooking the old town hall of Helsingborg and beyond that, Öresund, the fjord that separates Denmark and Sweden.

On this particular afternoon a mist had risen over the fjord as a result of cold air above warmer water

Here is one more of another homeless person taken during the same outing (actually this was taken moments later than the other). The bond between human and animal came to be the theme of the day :D

A lot of great shots in this thread!

Here is a street portrait I took recently of a homeless person who was selling news papers (a paper that specializes on poverty issues and the challenges of homeless people in general) and feeding pigeons in the centre of Copenhagen. When one of the pigeons flew up in his palm I was reminded of a saying we have in Danish, which when translated in to English goes like  One bird in the hand is better than two on the roof top, and was immediately grabbed by the moment and the message the picture conveys

EOS Bodies / New Pro Canon body tested by Steve McCurry???
« on: November 30, 2012, 03:33:01 PM »
A part from an extremely enviable fotoshoot in an exotic location surrounded by beautiful girls it seems good old Steve could also be testing out a new pro-body prototype from Canon. I know it seems weird given his decade long affiliation with Nikon, but check out this video at exactly 18:37. Appearing is a 1DX type body with a very unusual grip (a 1DX without the outer rubber part perhaps) and – revealingly - missing the Canon logo :o

What do you think guys?

I don't own the 70-200, but just tested again with a 16-35 II and a 85 1.2 II. If there is a difference I am not able to detect it. The focus acquisition with the 85 was perhaps even slower than normal with the focus beam, but not by a consistent margin.

I have only tested using the AF back button in single shot mode

This issue is a strange one..... I have tested a 5DIII (paired with a 24-70 MII) with the 600rt in a very dark indoor environment and found it to be equally fast (or slow) in acquiring and confirming focus on either single or multiple focus points with and without the aid of the assist beam.

I have one of the first produced 5DMIII's with the light leak (6th digit is 1)

I couldn't have said it better

Never mind the AF at f.8 limited tele lenses, just correct the red illumination issue already!

Grr

I suspect Canon will target this camera for the truly professional market and price it accordingly. It will be aimed at studio and commercial photographers who traditionally have been using MF, and for this reason the asking price will probably be north of 9000$

The D800 is an enthusiast camera which doesn't really compete with the big boys that dominate this prosegment like Hassy and PhaseOne, and is priced accordingly.

My 2 cents :-)

EOS Bodies / Re: DxOMark Sensor Performance: Nikon vs. Canon

Funny how these threads emerge on this forum with each new Nikon review on DxO.  As an interesting comparison Tech Radar, who is apparantly using the same DxO Analyzer software, recently posted a comparison of SNR and Dynamic Range for the 1DX, 5DIII, 1D4, D4 and D800. http://www.techradar.com/reviews/cameras-and-camcorders/cameras/digital-slrs-hybrids/canon-1dx-1091200/review/page:5#articleContent

While it does show an advantage for the Nikons on base ISO Dynamic Range, the Canons actually shows a better ability to retain it over the ISO range.
:o :P
