The rubber on my 60D meike grip smellled like plastic-softeners - it was very unpleasant holding the camera up to my face so I just removed the rubber from the grip. In the OPs pictures the rubber looks just like my smelly one.
Great to hear they've done a version for the 6D - absolute necessity.

I did not grow up with analog SLRs, nor am I in the 35/40+ Range, nor do i have extra cash to spend. I grew up with P+S cameras and moved up to DSLRs.
My reasoning:
1) Optical viewfinder (no lag) and very low shutter-lag
2) faster focusing (with USM Lenses)
3) Much better grip (& Feel), plus all basic settings on dedicated controls
And of course selectable lenses. But that's not exclusive to DSLRs anymore.

5DII is very close to 40D/60D operation wise, as it has the same type of AF. Menus might be a little different, but you'll get the hang of it pretty fast. 5DIII is much more advanced especially regardig AF.
I came from a 400D to a 5DII and felt at home very fast. Going back was hard.

The 6D launch is kinda like the 60D launch - many whined over the new plastic case and loss of AFMA (the latter I agree on).
If the Image quality of the 6D - especially on High ISO - is comparable to the 5DIII, and Video quality is like the 5DIII in terms of DR,Moiré/Aliasing and Details, it can become the big brother to my 60D as soon as the price drops in about 6 months. I want to go FF, but the 5DIII is way out of my price range, and the Moiré in Video of the 5DII is just too bad for that kind of money. GPS and Wifi are a nice add in for the cost.
The missing headphone jack can hopefully be compensated for by ML using the AV out - just like on the 60D.
If it delivers on Image/Video-quality and high ISO performance, I am excited about it. That's what the original 5D was about - great sensor in a (relatively) cheap body. This is the successor to the 5D II I have basically been waiting for since 2010.

As I only have 3 lenses, it's quite easy. Looking back, I would choose the same (on a crop body)
17-55 2.8 IS
50 1.4 (money no object I might choose the 35 1.4 L instead, just to get a little more in the shot when I usually use this lens)
70-200 2.8 L IS

doesn't work on all cameras, but magic lantern has a feature called focus peaking. Very helpful for video, if it works in magnification I do not know.

Just 3 Lenses, order of purchase:
EF 50 1.4 USM - Nice and light, used it exclusively for almost a year. Can take some great images, although I find the focus to be slow at times - especially at low light. I still like to put this lens on and just go out and get creative. This was my first lens I bought to replace the 18-55 Kit lens after getting bitten and infected by a 5DII and 24-105L combo for almost 3 weeks.
EF 70-200 f2.8 L IS - Got it used from a photographer with a bigger wallet, this lens is my favorite from fell to image quality.
EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS - Needed a normal Zoom with IS and f2.8 mainly for video, and some wideangle shots. I wish it were built like an L lens. Image quality is pretty good, and IS saved quite a few lowlight shots so far. (the tamron 24-70 f2.8 IS was released a while after I bought this lens, I probably would have gone for the tamron instead, to be compatible with a future FF camera). Most used for "documentary" work like family events.
Wishlist:
EF 24 f1.4 L - I saw some Images a photographer took with it on a 5DII in Berlin at an event, and it just blew me away. Kinda expensive for an engineering student.
Tokina 11-16 f2.8 - interesting focal range for crop cameras.

I always say the "point", since when i said "f one four" once, I got a comment "that's kinda slow", as he understood "f1:4" instead "F1:1.4".

R&D costs are factored into the price canon sells these cameras to retailers - not the price end customers pay. Canon doesn't give these cameras away and asks for R&D money - they sell these to retailers at a price point that includes all costs & profits margin. As soon as Canon sells a Camera (or Lens.....) to a Retailer, Canon makes it's profits, and that's it. Different pricing to end customers affects Retailers! A one-man Ebay seller can live with much lower return than a photo store with infrastructure, employees, rent/mortage and other costs. It is these Retailers that get hurt, those that provide service beyond selling and shipping the camera.
@jrista: Ebay does not sell the camera. An independent seller is using ebay as a platform to sell it. He is raking the profits, ebay just gets a fee for it's services. Canon does not get hurt by this, as they get their money from selling to retailers.
Grey-merket imports are an exception if Canon sells the camera to retailers in that region at a lower price, but due to Canon's warranty practice, the customer might ultimately pay the price for that. But Canon is ultimately controlling pricing and it's profits through it's wholesale pricing & strategies.
Associating different retail pricing with R&D money is economical nonsense. Sorry.

Every time I use my 60D I'm glad I picked it over the 600D. The The addition of the rear dial is useful in manual video mode for setting the aperture, and the front wheel for shutter speed.
Using the 3x Zoom to eliminale Moiré will make a 17mm Lens have the FOV of a 50mm, so real wideangle is not possible with it.
If you can get your hand on both in some camera shop, go and do it. I made the decision very quickly after handling both.

Looking back at the last few updates I don't think so. Canon used the last updates to raise prices, as seen on the 5D3 and 24-70.

Get the 2.8 II! It's an awesome lens, and will probably serve you longer than the older version.
I only have the Mark I (the Mark II is out of my price range), but it is still a very nice lens. I make very frequent use of the 2.8, and have also noticed the 60D outperform the lens in terms of resolution. I have used the new Version, and it really shines.
About portability: I find it quite portable, so I take it with me almost all of the time.
