PowerShot Cameras / S120 Successor?
« on: June 09, 2014, 09:33:37 PM »
I don't recall anything being announced to succeed the S120, have any of you heard anything of a looming release?

Thanks in advance

I have a 5D3 with the following line-up:
24-105
17-40
40/2.8
50/1.4
85/1.8
100L
135L
70-200/4.0/IS
TC 1.4x, MK.II

I am toying with the idea of selling the 24-105, 17-40 and possibly 50 1.4 and was wondering others thoughts on this and if you have gone that route and regretted it or not. I would likely use the 24-70 as a general walk-around, vacation lens along with environmental portraits. I tend not to shoot video.

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Software & Accessories / Sager (gamer) Laptop for PS and LR
« on: September 12, 2012, 12:29:27 PM »
I was looking at Ultrabooks - the ASUS Zenbook UX32VD ($1500) but realized I would be paying 75% the cost of getting a less portable but way more powerful laptop ($2000).

Does anyone has has any comments on Sager notebooks?

http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.php?page=product_info&model_name=NP9150

They get some good reviews over at Notebookreview.com and they are very modular from a component standpoint.

I am looking at getting the following:
15.6" Full HD LED-Backlit Display features 95% NTSC Color Gamut in Matte (1920 x 1080)
I7-3610QM
16GB RAM (up to 32GB)
Nvidia 970M graphics
256GB SSD
750GB SATA HDD in lieu of DVD drive
mSATA slot available too

I like the fact that they are super customizable. Any thoughts on this brand or suggestions of others ones to look at? My budget is around $2000 and I hope it will do me for four years or so. It will be my primary PP machine.

HDR - High Dynamic Range / 5d3: HDR VS Multiple Expsosure vs AEB
« on: August 30, 2012, 10:43:37 AM »
I have never done HDR with the exception of playing around with the in camera HDR functionality.

My question is I may take some shots this weekend that could benefit from HDR processing and was wondering if I could get some tips on the best approach. From what I can gather, the multiple exposure function is just that, it does not alter the exposure with subsequent frames.

I would think shooting bracketed with at least 3 frames would be best. Obviously I would shoot on a tripod.

- Is AEB bracketing the best approach?
- If so, what are the best settings (0,-,+)
- How many frames should I shoot of each scene?

Thank in advance.

EOS Bodies / 5D3 Light Leak Issue - Did you send yours in???
« on: July 24, 2012, 12:38:02 PM »
I am considering sending mine in, not because it is affecting my images just because I think it should be updated. I don't intend to sell it any time soon but I am sure it helps in that regard. I saw number 5Dc sellers mention the mirror fix and 1D3 owners talk about the fix for AF being performed.

They say it will be 7-10 days to perform the repair.

What are your thoughts on this?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Odd Behaviour between CF and SDHC card
« on: May 19, 2012, 08:46:21 PM »
I am experiencing odd behaviour when I remove the CF card to upload images to the computer. Regardless of whether I am in Standard or Auto Switch Card mode, the camera will switch to the SDHC card. I just tried it with the camera off and it remained on the CF card when I re-inserted the CF again but I could have sworn even when the camera is off it has switched to the SD card.

Anyone else having similar issues?

EOS Bodies / 5D3 Imaging Viewing Malfunction
« on: May 13, 2012, 07:41:06 PM »
I have the original firmware (1.0.7) on my body and I experienced weird behaviour this past weekend on a shoot.

I turned the camera on and went to focus and it did not seem to auto-focus. I checked if the 85/1.8 was in MF but it was in AF. I took a shot and it thew image did not pop  up on the display. I thought that was weird and I hit the chimp button and nothing. I hit the magnify button and nothing. The display was illuminated with the shooting settings which is normal. I rebooted and the same thing. I rebooted a third time and it was OK.

Anyone else experience this kind of weirdness with their 5D3?

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / Quicj Release Hand Strap
« on: May 12, 2012, 11:10:46 AM »
I have a Canon E2 hand strap and am looking for a quick release grommet or eyelet to be able to remove the hand strap from the camera body top eyelet. I want the option to remove the hand strap without having to thread and un-thread it each time.

I know Optex have these but it still does not solve the coupling between the strap and the loop:

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5D3: INFO vs. Q button
« on: April 03, 2012, 07:37:27 PM »
Is it possible to get the Q button to behave like the INFO button as it relates to 'Display Shooting Settings'?

When you are in still shooting mode, if you press INFO 3 times (or fewer if you have removed Display camera settings and Electronic Level) you are presented with the Display Shooting Settings window. If you click on the Q button, you cycle between being able make changes via the Multi-controller or pushing the buttons on top of the camera. Page 337 of the manual describes this.

My question is, when you press the Q button when the rear display is blank, you also get a Display Shooting Settings window. The difference is, if you try to bring up the on screen display to change, say the focus points, the screen goes blank. That said, there is a definite difference in the way these two buttons behave.

Any insight into this?

Thanks in advance!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Hand strap recommendation
« on: March 24, 2012, 10:39:29 AM »
I was thinking of getting a hand strap to augment my Black Rapid RS-4. There are occasions when I might prefer a hand strap rather than a sling. I know Canon makes one, although it is not wuick to mount or remove.

Any suggestions? I am open to eBay stuff if you have a link to a decent one.

Thanks in advance!

EOS Bodies / (CAN) Henry's extended warranty of 5D3
« on: March 22, 2012, 11:45:26 AM »
I have the option of buying an extended warranty on the 5D3 for $469 or the entire kit at $599. This would give me the following for a total of four years:
Anti-Lemon Protection
30 Day Price Protection
90 Day Defective Exchange
Global Coverage

http://www.henrys.com/Henrys-Extended-Life-Plan.aspx

1- I know it is only insurance, do any of you have any experience with this, good or bad, that you can share?
2- Is it worth it?

Thanks in advance.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Yongnuo wireless Intervelometer
« on: March 12, 2012, 10:12:47 AM »
I was looking into buying an intervalometer and was wondering if anyone had experience with the Yongnuo  MC-36R?

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/YONGNUO-MC-36R-C3-Wireless-Timer-Remote-CANON-5D-II-7D-1D-IV-50D-40D-30D-20D-/330673602061?pt=Camera_Camcorder_Remotes&hash=item4cfdaebe0d

It seems like it would work with any Canon that has a C8 connector such as the 5D2.

EOS Bodies / 5D Mk.III Prices set to Rise?
« on: March 07, 2012, 08:49:48 AM »
In the recent post http://www.canonrumors.com/2012/03/5d-mark-iii-availability-update there is a rumor that prices will be regulated.

cr says:
"It’s also rumored Canon will regulate the price of this camera starting in May. Which means, there will be a certain price point that a retailer cannot go below to sell the camera. This sort of regulation will also make such things advertising “free” things to bundle with the camera not allowed. This is good for retailers if true."

Does anyone think the prices could rise come May? Is this some scare tactic by Canon to spook the channel and perpetuate sales? Or does Canon want to maintain the MSRP as long as possible to avoid devaluing the new offering?

EOS Bodies / 40D vs 5D3: ISO and lens question
« on: March 03, 2012, 06:37:54 PM »
I currently have a 40D with a 17-55. I am looking at getting a 5D3 with the kit 24-105 lens. I am also knocking around the notion of getting the 24-70 II instead of the 24-105 in order to maintain 2.8 aperture.

I am a hobbyist who likes to do portraiture, the odd event, vacations and the like. I also have an 85/1.8, 135L and 70-200/4/IS.

ISO question:
I never go above ISO 800 (unless I really need to) on the 40D - what would be an equivalent ISO on a 5D3 or even a 5D2 for that matter? 3200?

Lens question:
The 17-55 is on the camera 95% of the time. Based on the better ISO performance of the 5D2 or 3, if I boosted the ISO up to make up for the loss of a stop on the lens, do you think they would balance each other out from a noise standpoint (DoF issues aside). In other words, if money was not an issue, as a general everyday lens, if you were me would you get the 24-105 or the 24-70 II?

Thanks in advance!

EOS Bodies / 5D Mk III Kit Lenses
« on: March 01, 2012, 06:47:20 PM »
It looks like there may be both the 24-105 4.0 IS Mk.I and 24-70 2.8 Mk.II being offered based on Photoprice.ca as they have placeholders for both:
