EOS-M / Filters for M
« on: May 08, 2013, 09:15:22 AM »
Hi folks,

loving my M so far, polariser is on order, but I would also like some ND's, perhaps an ND16, but I'm struggling to find anything in 43mm (other than unbranded cheapies on an auction site) any suggestions?

also, has anybody used a faderND on their M?  Again, looking perhaps for a 43mm.  LCW do a 46, and there is a lot of crap out there, what are you using and are you happy?

Cheers

EOS-M / Subsequent m naming...
« on: May 04, 2013, 04:06:23 AM »
If canon expand or improve the m series I wonder what they will call the new models?

Didn't Leica get a bit defensive when Olympus launched the OM-1 under its original name of m-1?

So will it be the canon m1 m2 m3 etc?
Or the mA mB mC?

Or maybe even names?  The m biaritz?  The m mayfair?  The m club?

Just a bit of fun, but thoughts please....

EOS-M / Cases FOR EOS M + 22
« on: May 03, 2013, 05:35:45 AM »
Any recommendations.

The canon one is ridiculously priced and is only half a case.

I was hoping for something like an ERC, but with the tripod socket repeated so that the camera can be tripod mounted even in the case.

I've had a look around but can't really find anything that fits the bill.

As an alternative a compact case would do.

What are other M users using?  Real life experience only please, I can work google fairly well by now :o)

EOS Bodies - For Video / Adding XLR connections to a 5D3
« on: May 03, 2013, 05:32:00 AM »
Hi folks

I've a beachtek DXA-4 XLR interface which was designed for use with video cameras like the Sony VX2000 and FX1 etc.

I've recently sold my FX1 and so this is going to get punted.

It has a VHS pin which would be easily removed with a sharp pair or pliers or small hacksaw, then it'll bolt straight onto a 5D3.

It's a pretty basic unit, it gives you 2 x XLR inputs, which can be switched between mic and line level, and have rotary level controls, on each channel.  The device can be set up to work in stereo (seperate audio on each stereo track) or mono (same on both stereo tracks) and connects via a 3.5mm jack.

It does not provide phantom power, so you'll need a hot mic like a K6/ME66, or a line from a mixer.

This will let you record XLR audio in the camera, in the one file along with your video, no synching, no forgetting to hit record on a second device, no charging, no batteries to run out.

This will of course work on any DSLR, however I recommend for use with a 5D3 as this has the headphone monitor from the camera, so you can keep an ear on sound.

I'm the UK, and am open to offers, no matter how ridiculous.  The current equivalent is the DXA-2T which sells for around $180us and £160.  The unit is very lightly used and in full working order.  I'm going to put it on an auction site in a week or so, but thought I would run it past here first.

Lenses / Viking Burial Fun (eral) topic!
« on: May 01, 2013, 05:45:48 PM »
My local lens surgeons worked wonders on my dropped Sigma 18-50.  For £84 the brought it back to life and calibrated it better than it was new (Aj Johnstones BTW, for anybody in Scotland)

Before I got the repair I asked forum users for advice on a viking burial...

So CRoomies!  Suppose you have a dead lens.  The AF has banged, some spores have been spotted or you get the dreaded BC or ERR99.

How would you give your glass a worthy last hurrah or send off?

Third Party Manufacturers / Just when I was about to buy an M...

http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/04/17/pentax-ricoh-releases-ricoh-gr-camera-with-apsc-cmos-sensor

I've a 15 year history with Ricoh GR cameras,  from my GR1s to my GRD.

Very interested in this.  Ricoh quite often get the GRs just right.  Even if it did take my GRD a week to record a RAW.

Lenses / Replacement for Sigma 18-55
« on: April 07, 2013, 05:43:21 PM »
So I've lost two lenses this week.  My seldom used 600mm f8 Sigma mirror lens which has been auction sited off, and my most used 18-50 f2.8 DC EX macro.  Which has decided it wants to be a prime, instead of a zoom.

Visiting the repair shop tomorrow to see if they recommend reviving or giving it a viking burial (suggestions for a viking burial for a lens...)

Either way, I may be in the market for a replacement lens within this range.

The canon is too expensive, I wouldn't buy it on principle alone.

Had the 17-40, too slow for video, really needs to be a constant f2.8, as it's going to be mainly used for video.

The Sigma replacement has OS, which I don't need, and don't think is worth an extra £200 over what I paid for the old lens.

I really liked the images from the 18-55 IS kit lens (no, really I did, think they are great for the cash) but the variable slow aperture makes it a no-no.

So I've came up with a couple of ideas...

Tamron 17-50 f2.8 XR Di II. (not OS version) I've never owned a tamron. I held one yesterday, feels quite plasticky.  Reviews well enough within segment.  Not sure.  Would be most direct replacement for what I was using.

Tokina 28-70 f2.6-2.8 SV.
Would need to be a used buy, but these lenses get a legendary reputation, based on the angenieux heritage of the design.  Would lose a little on the wide end, make make it up on the tele.  Quite tempted.  And already happily use Tokina.

Canon 35mm f2.0 (old)
Would be a reasonable midpoint between my other two video lenses.  Like the bright aperture.

Canon 28 f2.8
An old favourite of mine.  But they are selling for silly prices, more used now than you could have bought for new 3 months ago. I prevously owned this lens and loved it.. But the option of a faster aperture like the above or like the...

Samyang 35mm f1.4
Would be great for video, but above budget ever so slightly.

Thoughts based on experience?

P.S. It's for a cropped sensor.  And I don't have L money.

Third Party Manufacturers / Lens repair taking forever - option
« on: February 05, 2013, 12:22:25 PM »
Background:

I bought a used late model (smooth finish) sigma 30mm f1.4 lens.

Worked fine in MF mode (using live view at least) but not in AF mode (including Focus confirmation in MF mode)
usuable on my 7D at +18 MFA, unusable on my 600D for stills.

Submitted to supplier for repair 3 weeks ago, told today that it will be another 3 weeks before Sigma will look at it.

Have been offered a replacement used lens, but older version (fuzzy finish)

Dilemma:

Do I accept the older lens (potentially as old as 2005) which may have the same AF issue?

Do I wait and hope Sigma fix the lens I bought? (was in very nice condition with box, hood etc)

It's a lens I am quite keen to have in my kitbag and got it at a good price (thankfully with guarantee)

What would you do between these two options?  Wait for the newer lens to be fixed, or take a (hopefully working) older copy of the lens instead?

N.B. Buying a 1DX and 35 f1.4L is not an option, so please don't be that guy.

United Kingdom & Ireland / Selling used gear UK
« on: January 24, 2013, 11:50:27 AM »
Had it with a popular auction site.

Noticed a known scammer had bid on a lens and managed to cancel before sending lens or losing money, feedback rating decimated however and the popular auction site staff won't rescind, despite being presented with lots of evidence of scamming.

I know from my days of retail that I can expect no more than 50% of sellable value as a trade in, so can I ask, has any UK user had any success selling gear elsewhere.

By UK I mean United Kingdom.  Only answers from UK users, in the UK, who have sold stuff in the UK.

Thanks!

If you have an Sony NEX camera and a bag of EF lenses this metabones adaptor makes some startling claims...
An EOS M killer?
Primarily for video use, why not stills too though?

Software & Accessories / Oddest kit purchase?
« on: January 03, 2013, 08:51:45 PM »
What object have you bought / used for your photography that specifically has a non-photography purpose?

From my own kit (mainly video biased):

In the first dv days (vx1000a) I used to have a nylon stocking stretched over a filter to combat 'jaggies'

Currently I use corn plasters to conceal the heads of wireless radio mics under clothing

Clothes pegs to fix mic cables

And I use an elastic jar opener as a focus puller

What ingenuous use have you found for non-photo items?
