Lenses / Canon 70-300L with Kenko 1.4x or 2.0x
« on: December 26, 2013, 03:24:01 PM »
Anyone using the Kenko Pro-300 extenders with the Canon 70-300L on a Canon 6D or EOS-M ?

Any issues ?  Does AF work ?  Any lockups or other problems ?

Thanks

Lenses / Trade current lenses for 70-200L f4 IS or 70-300L
« on: December 09, 2013, 05:18:26 PM »
My local specialist shop has a pair of secondhand L teles in stock - both in fantastic condition.  I've currently got a 70-300 non L and a 10-22 that I can't use on my 6D, I've also a 1.4x II and potentially a 135L to trade...

Getting shut of the 70-300 non L and 10-22 is a no brainer, but I'm cut between the two white L teles that the shop are selling, both with a 12 month warranty.  The 70-200 would work with the x1.4, but would I miss the 135L if I traded that in too ?  Hmmm...

Thoughts ?

Lenses / How does EF Mount compare to other mounts
« on: October 19, 2013, 02:59:38 PM »
We often here that Canon had to ditch the FD mount in order to get AF working, what advantages did the EF mount bring and what exactly are the pros and cons of lens mounts by Nikon, Sony, Pentax and others ?

Lenses / UV Filter damage limitation on 16-35II
« on: October 03, 2013, 12:10:11 PM »
So there I was, walking along with my 6D & 16-35mm II and boom, my knee gave way on some steps, I fell to my knees and the front of the lens hit the ground, sound of glass smashing as I commando rolled over...  I've grazed both my knees, my left arm and dented my pride...  Plus did the attached damage to my 16-35mm II - can't get the filter off at the moment, going to take it into the local independent shop when I get home from holiday, filter is a dead loss, lens looks ok bar the marks on the outer edge and until I get the filter ring detached, I've no idea of the damage to the front filter thread.  Lens appears to work, two scuffs on my 6D are annoying too :-/

So folks - always fit a filter !!!

Third Party Manufacturers / Playful ideas with a Canon !
« on: August 23, 2013, 07:47:25 PM »
I've really got into playing around with how i take my photos recently, been using black glass for a few years, got a Lensbaby last Christmas, added the macro/wide/tele accessory kit around Easter, then a intervalidameter, then the lensbaby fisheye optic last month...  Also using Instagram and Kitcam on my iPhone almost daily.  I've read about people using old retro lenses, popping adapters on to use new lenses like the Nikon 14-24 etc...   Then I've read recently about the Lynny Lens, but what else is there ?  What playful fun do you get up to with your Canon, with lenses, sliders, flashes, timing accessories and such...

Lenses / 400mm f5.6 - Why ?
« on: July 14, 2013, 04:52:47 PM »
Been pondering my long tele options over the last few months...  A 100-400mm is looking very likely, but I'm left pondering, why would anyone but the 400mm f5.6 prime ?

Serious question, what does it offer other than being very slightly cheaper and lighter ?

Canon General / Camera bags inside Versailles
« on: June 01, 2013, 03:01:45 PM »
I'm currently in Paris on holiday armed with practically my full kit of lenses (see below) - we are planning on going to Versailles tomorrow (Sunday) and I've stumbled across the access rules which appear to suggest that bags and such have to be left in the cloakrooms before entering the palace, but they won't accept photography equipment left in the cloakrooms, I'm guessing for security/theft reasons - has anyone visited and could clarify the situation, as I'd like to take my kit bag or at least my small rucksack with at least the 24-70 for the gardens and the 16-35 for the interiors - but don't want to be caught out by the rules.  I would just carry the 6D and a single lens, but would prefer the flexibility of the 16-35, 24-70 & 135

I'm thinking as a one stop lens the 24-70 would work best, but would the 16-35 better suit the interiors ?  Thoughts ?

Lenses / Cut sized FF alternative to 28-300mm L
« on: May 28, 2013, 06:46:10 PM »
Another thread got me thinking, whilst the 28-300mm L is the difinative FF superzoom - what other options are there for full frame cameras given that other superzooms in Canon's range are APS-C only.

Just how good or bad are the old 28-200 and 35-350 lenses, will the Tamron 18-270 work on FF ?  What other options are there ?

Lenses / Standard Lens for Paris and London holiday.
« on: May 16, 2013, 05:32:58 PM »
I've hit a bit of a problem this week - I bought my 6D just before the New Year, I bought the body only and intended to use my 50mm f1.4 and 135mm f2 as my main lenses, soon after, my local shop had a second hand 17-40mm come in, I when to look and walked out with a new 16-35mm MkII Lens, which I'm really really very pleased with.  My itch continued in Feb with a Eos M & 22mm prime, which I also really love for when I'm out on long walks.  I'm missing something though...  I'm finding that I'm not using my 50mm because its fairly inflexible as a walk around lens...  What's a boy to do ???

I've now made the mistake of checking my local dealer and noticed they have a second hand 24-105mm (fantastic condition they say) in for about what a new one would have cost me back in Dec had I bought it as a kit lens.  I've a fear though, will I walk out with a 24-70mm MkII that I've promised myself next year ?

I plan to take my 10-22mm and 70-300 non L along as trade in lenses, I can't use the former and don't use the latter as my 135mm F2 gives better pictures when I crop in than the 70-300 ever could.  I'm starting to consider that what if I also traded my 50mm f1.4 too ?

I head to London and Paris late next week for a two week holiday - I'm wanting the 24-70mm but have a niggle in my head, is it the right lens for the holiday and should I get the second hand 24-105mm now, keep the 50mm and then as planned, get the 24-70mm next year ?

I like landscapes, available light, flower and portrait photography mostly.  Won't be taking a tripod, but may just pick a joby up at the weekend for emergency ND1000 usage ;-)

Help me deal with the itch please ;-)

Software & Accessories / Poor Lightroom output of Jpg's
« on: May 07, 2013, 03:11:59 PM »
Looking for a touch of brain picking, looking at photos I've taken using my current gear, everything looks fine when viewing the raw image in Lightroom, but trying all three output options starts creating nasty colours, which are in particular nasty looking when zoomed into the jpg of people's faces and the flesh tones.

I'm forming an opinion that this is a limitation of the gamut of jpg's, but is there anything I can do to mitigate the harsh colours I'm getting when zoomed into parts of faces.

Third Party Manufacturers / Sub £100 Nikon Lens for Airshows
« on: April 06, 2013, 12:21:20 PM »
Friend of mine against my better judgement bought a second hand Nikon D40 with a 18-55mm kit lens - we are heading off to a few airshows this summer and he wants a better lens - I'm thinking an old Nikon prime might suit his needs well in the 100-200mm range - looking at less than £100 - any ideas ?

Software & Accessories / B&W vs Dorr ND1000 Colour Cast
« on: March 18, 2013, 05:22:48 PM »
Had a 72mm B&W ND1000 filter for a long while now, well from when they where the only ND1000 filters available in the UK.  I've always found it gave a brown colour cast on my 450D, but not yet tried it on my 6D, so can't say if the same is true there.  I've now a requirement for an 82mm ND1000 filter, so thought I'd give a Dorr one a try, I've ordered, it's in the post, but out of interest, has anyone used a Dorr ND1000 filter, what's the colour cast on Canon sensors and also, does colour cast vary from sensor to sensor within a camera range ?

EOS-M / Future EOS-M Lenses
« on: February 17, 2013, 05:11:15 PM »
Ok, so I got myself a EOS-M "toy" yesterday, lets talk lenses - we have the following;
- 22mm - which is about a FFE of 35mm
- 18-55mm - which is about a FFE of 29-88mm

I'd like to see a few more, there has already been talk of a fast prime, a 55-300mm and a super tele, so what's coming and what would others like to see ?

Predicted;
- 55-300mm - I suspect this might be something less, perhaps a 55-200
- A fast prime ?  Maybe something like a 85mm - which is about a FFE of 135mm
- Supertele ?  Really ???  I just can't see this, maybe a 300mm ?

What would I like ?
- 15-85mm would be peachy

What about the rest of you ?
