Software & Accessories / External Video Recorders for the 5D3 Firmware Upgrade?

With the upcoming 5D MK III firmware upgrade, I plan to invest in an external recorder. I do a lot of VFX and some green screen work, so the ability to record in ProRes will be helpful.

I have been doing some research on the recorders and have read this series of blogs:

Can anyone share their thoughts /experiences / recommendations on a recorder from the standpoint of hands on experience? I do not necessarily need a unit that has a monitor (as I own both the smallHD DP4 and DP6), so that is not a necessity.  I have read the the AJA Ki Pro Mini gets very high marks.

Can anyone recommend a reflector holder for both in-studio and on-location use?

I have tried one of the cheaper versions with the tiny little mounting points and have returned it.

I am now considering the Impact Telescopic Collapsible Reflector Holder for $47, due to the size of the clamps.

Any help would be appreciated  .

I do have a small fortune invested in Manfrotto 501 QR ... would there be a Manfrotto ballhead that would meet my needs you could vouch for?

Browsing in the lens section of the Canon Refurb store today I noticed an interesting paradox.

Currently in the market for a teleconverter, the 1.4 II is listed at $349 in the Refurb outlet:

Lenses / Confused About 50mm Lens Filter

I have a UV Filter question:

I am sold on the B+W brand for UV filters for protecting my lenses.

However, there are 5 or 6 versions on the B&H site for my Canon nifty fifty 50mm 1.4 for a 58mm thread:

Lenses / Has Canon Reduced Its Refurb Inventory

As I recall, in the past there has typically been 5 pages of lenses listed on the Canon Refurb site:

Now there is just 2 pages, with notable omissions as to the models which used to be listed. Also, the BODIES listings also seems to be smaller.

Am I wrong?

Canon General / An Academy Award for a feature film shot all on 5D MkII?

Tonight's Academy Awards for the category of Best Documentary Feature includes a film shot by Danfung Dennis.
The relevant point here is that it was shot entirely on a 5D Mk II.

While the nomination itself speaks positively to the emerging viability of the HDSLR form, the fact that it was even nominated for an Oscar - the first nomination ever for a feature length film shot all on an HDSLR - is great for our camera (or at least, those who are passionate about using Canon HDSLR's for filmmaking .

Is the 1.4 v III extender worth the extra $170?

I will use this on my new 70-200 2.8, wondering if the vIII will result in significantly improved performance.

Canon General / Dumb Question...

Is it a bad thing to leave my 24-70 lens attached to my t2i when I am done shooting and for a few days? Should you always remove your lens when you know you might be awhile before you use your camera again?

Just thinking in leaving it on I might be somehow damaging the lens due to its weight ...

Canon General / A Different Type Of Investment In Canon

Since the next 6 months may very well re-define Canon's position in the market (at least the pro market), is it a good time to be investing in Canon stock?

I realize that pro sales don't generate the profit which their consumer products generate ... but there is the "trickle down" effect.

So do I buy Canon stock now with the anticipation they will hit home runs over the upcoming months?

There seems to be a replenishment of cameras and lenses at the Canon Refurb store.

Just picked up the 1.4 fifty for a little over $300. And saw where the 60D body only is back in stock.
