Pricewatch Deals / Prices trending higher?
« on: May 09, 2013, 01:28:41 PM »
I'm itching to click the buy button on the 5d mk3, but the last week or so it's jumped $400.  Is MAP really starting to effect things?  Or does wedding season really lower inventory this much?  I view the body as a solid $3k and the kit a solid $3,500 price point.  Might need to check to see if the loyalty program is valid on the refurb mk3's.

Site Information / Recommendation sub-forum?
« on: February 08, 2013, 03:49:58 PM »
There is a lot of 'what do you think I should buy' topics, and grouping them together would be really nice.  Toss on top of that doing a sticky FAQ on what needs to be a part of these recommendation requests.  Things that are constantly asked - what do you have, what do you shoot, what's your budget - those tidbits.  Lens discussions shouldn't be mixed into rumors.

Thoughts?

Canon General / Dream Package for Soccer???
« on: September 28, 2012, 05:14:37 PM »
I won an auction to shoot sideline/endline at a MLS game here in Seattle.  Having done this before, I was slightly limited in what I was shooting, but I'm going all out for this one.  The dilemma I'm having is what to rent to augment my existing kit...  At this point here's what I have coming from Roger (in red) with my existing kit:

Monopod with Manfrotto T bar and RC4 QR plates with:
5d3 with 300/2.8IS and 1.4xII tele
1d2 with 70-200/2.8

Spider belt with:
Right Hip 7d with 24-70/2.8
Left Hip T4i with Tokina 12-24/4 with a 40/2.8 and 17-55/2.8IS for fun

Now, to start with, I'm not even sure the placement of the 5d3/1d2/7d is correct, but I think that with the range on the 300 and the wide of the 24-70 (28-112) are going to be the main image makers, but the 1d2 is getting lots of range in the middle of things.

Now the fun, if I get ambitious, what would you 'upgrade' from this??  I've considered a second 5d3/7d, 70-200/2.8isII, 300/2.8isII even going so far as a D800e with a 200-400 or a 14-24/4.  In a really bad dream I'd have a H5d-80 for some amazing shots, but my bank isn't that crazy with me...

The location is Qwest Field / CenturyLink field (just hosted Monday Night Football) so the lighting is as good as it'll get.  Time frame is beginning of November, and being Seattle, there is a chance of rain possible...  I've been digging around my existing photos from a few years ago trying to notice a pattern in MM, but it's all over the board, and some of it I cropped down.  Oh, and we get some great support so there'll be plenty of crowd shots:

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Shooting both in front and behind yourself?
« on: September 20, 2012, 02:36:13 PM »
So, I heard a long time ago when shooting, make sure to turn around and see what's behind you - it may be a better photo.  When shooting sports, the celebration around scoring - thinking in soccer specifically - I'm actually thinking having a body on my back with a wide angle prime lens and a wired remote (set it to low speed continuous shooting).  That way when I'm looking at the player, shooting, I'm also getting the fan reaction behind me, looking at the same player.

Any ideas or thoughts on this?  Grab one of the body harnesses and wear it backwards?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5d2 or 6d

4 years is a long time, but the 5d2 is still an amazing camera.  Drooled over a 5d3 but really can't justify the purchase (yet).

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Advice for checking a used 5Dmk2
« on: April 05, 2012, 01:59:10 PM »
With all the new mk3's out there, I'm going to snag a used mk2 on the cheap (and I won't be the only one).  What advice or process would you use to look at a used body?  Shutter count doesn't really matter if the unit was mainly a video rig.  Checking for hot pixels is key, but how can I test a camera in 10-15min prior to handing over $1,600 cash?
