Canon General / Best Filter for 40mm Pancake?
« on: June 08, 2012, 09:21:19 AM »
Interested in what everyone thinks is the best filter for the 40mm Pancake?

I am looking protection from scratches and fingerprints from a 3 year old, with out effecting image quality.

I have pre-ordered the lens and B&H recommended a $6 Tiffen UV filter.  Is this one as good as any?  I do not mind spending more if the money is well spent.

I guess the question could be: Is it a good use of money to upgrade from a $6 UV filter to a $30-$50 UV filter?

Thanks! -- Steven

United States / 70 - 200L IS MII vs 70 - 300L based on price
« on: November 29, 2011, 09:32:31 AM »
First thanks so much for this great forum.

I have been thinking about a nice telephoto zoom and been looking at the 70-200L IS MII or the 70-300L.  I currently have a 60D.

Current Prices:
70-200 = $1974
70-300 = $1369 ($600 Less)
70-300 + tripod collar = $1369 + $150(approx) = $1519  ($450 Less)

Based on the current prices would you step up to the 70-200 IS MII?

Originally I was thinking of the 70-300 based on price but for the next few days the 70-200 is less than $2000, making the prices closer.

I like the fact that the 70-300 is smaller but I really like the idea of flexibility of f/2.8 on the 70-200.  I have a feeling I will be in more low light situations rather than needing the extra length.

All opinions are welcome! -- Steven

United States / EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 or EF 16-35 f/2.8L
« on: November 04, 2011, 05:15:38 PM »
First thanks to everyone for their posts and information.

I just purchased my first real DSLR body a 60D today.  My neighbor will let me borrow some lenses to get me started.

I was thinking of going with the EF-S 17-55 but I started looking at the 16-35L

Which do you think would be a better lens if you can only have one?

The primary use of the lens interview videos in a studio setting
Family pictures, I have two little girls.
Pictures around the house and places we go.
Other fun hobby photos.

I am leaning to the 17-55 but I like the fact that the 16-35 is an EF mount and could work with a full frame camera.

Which do you think will work better on a crop body?

I will probably try to rent each lens to try it out but interested in peoples experiences / opinions.

Thanks so much.  Cant wait to start with my new camera! -- Steven

EOS Bodies / The 1DX is announced -- What will October 26th bring?
« on: October 18, 2011, 01:23:55 PM »
Not to move topics to quickly but...

Now that we have announcement on the 1DX today, What do you think Canon will be announcing on October 26th?

It sounds like a Printer for sure. Could anything else be announced also?

I am pretty sure it will not be the 5Diii but could a new entry level full frame body priced below $2500 be revealed?

United States / What should my first prime lens be?
« on: October 04, 2011, 11:23:17 AM »
I am getting back into photography and thinking of purchasing a 60D (or maybe something else if it is announced soon) for Christmas.  I am currently borrowing a friends Nikon D90 with the kit zoom lens.

It will be for filming video for the web in a studio setting and family/hobby/fun photos.

1. I have read many people suggest buying the body only and getting a good prime lens and a good zoom.  Is this the best way to go?

for the prime lens I am looking at:
  • Canon 50MM f/1.8 (approx $100)
  • Canon 50MM f/1.4 (approx $400)
  • Canon 50MM f/1.2L (approx $1500)

I think the 50MM f/1.4 is the way to go for me.

2. Is it worth an extra $300 to move from the f/1.8 to the f/1.4?

3. For almost 4 times the price what are you getting when you move from the f/1.4 to the f/1.8? Is the step up worth the extra money?

4. I have also read about a sigma 30mm f/1.4 (approx $500) would that be better to start with?

5. As prices get technology progresses and prices drop I may move to a full frame and would like the lenses to be somewhat future proof.  Would you answers change if I was using a full frame body?

Thanks so much for your time and this forum!
