Lenses / Help with event lens ( weddings, anniversary's, etc)
« on: April 09, 2012, 08:41:40 AM »
camera: 5dM2
Flash: 580 EX2
lens: 70-200 f/4 L IS USM

Question: I need a wide zoom or possibly prime wide angle for indoor shots of interior, groups of people, etc. I can't afford the 24-70II and my hands are not the most still and IS really helps me out when the I stop down and in certain instances don't use my flash but was wondering if I should get the original 24-70L 2.8 or possibly a third party brand, a canon prime, etc? The function of this lens will be at events where generally depth of field will not be much of an issue and most likely shooting at f/8 or f11 for maximum clarity and sharpness. I have my 70-200 at f4 for more isolating shots  and thinner dof portraits. Of course the 16-35L looks real attractive to hit every wide focal point and then keep my 70-200 for portraits? It's just, with the 24-70 I can get a wide and then not have to switch lens to possibly get off a portrait shot if need be at 70? (only carrying one body on me)

Many Thanks!

Any recommendations or suggestions greatly appreciated?

Software & Accessories / Standard size of web bio pic?
« on: February 21, 2012, 11:02:46 AM »
My apologies if this question is in the wrong forum. I was trying to figure out what the standard size of a web based bio pic is? After shooting portraits in raw and then PP in LR3, what export size jpg would be the standard corporate web site size pic?

Thanks.

EOS Bodies / Clarify some Canon 5d M2 in-camera processing questions
« on: January 04, 2012, 02:59:31 PM »

I recently bought a Canon 5d M2 and have been playing with it for a couple months slowly learning how all the settings work. I shoot Raw+JPG as a way to compare my photos when I'm in the PP part of my workflow using LR V3.x.

I have a few questions that are still lingering and would love some advice or suggestions if possible:

1. Is it correct that the preview on the LCD is of the JPG and all the associated Canon in-camera processing settings that are set by me or Canon defaults?

2. If you shoot RAW only, is the JPG preview the same as the JPG preview with RAW+JPG?

3. If one wants to reply on PP software such as LR, what settings in camera should be enabled, disabled, etc? I realize that they can all be changed in PP but what is the best way to view the preview and see it based on the exposure you just shot it at?

4. Is it ever ok to rely on the in-camera processing for important work like portrait shots, landscapes, etc? I'm excluding situations like sports or possibly weddings where possibly thousands of shots are taken.

Thanks.

Portrait / Canon s95 shot of daughter at Disney World

Disney World. Shot with s95 after receiving it 24 hours before. Not sure what the white dots are in her eyes? Also, cut off her arm, but at 3.5 years old, did not have time to compose.

Lenses / Outdoor Portrait? 85 1.8 or EF70-200f/4L IS USM on Crop Body 1.6x
« on: November 03, 2011, 08:32:30 AM »
Hi All. Love the forum and the masterful insight from many members.

I'm shooting a portrait outdoors ( warm light: about 1 hr before sunset) using a white background and 1 reflector. Equipment will be Canon 50d and a tripod. No flash. These shots will be very tight and only include head and top of shoulders on model.

Question: What lens will be sharper? The canon 85,, 1.8 USM or EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM (IS will be shut off because using a tripod)

My sole intention is to get both eyes in focus and generally face but the rest does not really matter as much.

Can i shoot at 1.8 or should I stop to 2.8 for better sharpness? On the 70-200,  if using the same focal length ( 85mm or 136 (crop fov) will the 70-200 be just as sharp at f4.0 or should i stop to 5.6?

Thanks for the time to read and any help is appreciated.

Best,

EOS Bodies / 5DM2 Purchase From Canada (Henrys) to USA
« on: November 01, 2011, 03:55:03 PM »
Hi all.

I'm a US citizen and noticed Henry's Camera has 5dM2 for a great price. I sent them an email and received this response: (they were NOT in stock at the time)

"Payment for items being shipped to the United States is by PayPal only.  The charge of $2012.95 is in Canadian Funds and will be exchanged into US funds at time of shipment.  We will not set US Funds exchange until then as the exchange rate varies on a daily basis."

Theoretically, if the camera was shipped today, the exchange rate would be: (2012.95 would convert to $1973.87 US Dollars)

I then sent them an email and requested if any other fees would be charges as I'm just trying to find out EXACTLY how much I will be charged.

They responded: "We have the camera in stock as of the writing of this email.  If you ordered today it should theoretically ship tomorrow.
There may be brokerage fees associated with your purchase, but they are set by the USPS."

I do not know what "Brokerage fees" are and sent an email requesting explanation but have not heard back. I then did some research via Google on the term "brokerage fee"  and found this:
"FORMS & FEES:
NOTE on Brokerage Fees (there are none): Because USPS & CanadaPost have long standing agreements to handle each other's mail, brokers' fees are NEVER charged. EXPENSIVE BROKERS FEES MUST be CHARGED BY MOST OTHER COURIER/SHIPPING SERVICES. BUT NOT USPS or CANADA POST! :-)"

Could anyone tell me if Henry's is a reliable source and what the final charge would be for a 5dm2 purchase? Also, don't understand brokerage fees and i'm a bit skeptical at this point.

Thank you.
