EOS Bodies - For Stills / Full Frame Sharper Than Crop?
« on: October 19, 2012, 01:24:54 PM »
So I've been doing some research and comparing different lenses on The Digital Picture's ISO comparison tool.  What I am seeing is that the the same lens on both full frame and crop cameras shows a sharper image on the full frame camera.  According to Ken Rockwell, he states that full frame will always be sharper.  I know people don't like quoting him much, but from what I see, he appears to be right.

Here are a couple examples...

50mm 1.4
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=115&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=4&LensComp=115&CameraComp=736&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=3

85 1.8
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=106&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=2&LensComp=106&CameraComp=736&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=2

Is there something I'm missing here?  Is the difference between the two cameras making a difference, or does full frame generally produce sharper results than crop using the same lens?

Lenses / First Portrait Lens, Need Suggestions
« on: October 06, 2012, 07:53:04 PM »
Hey Everyone,

So I'm about to buy my first portrait lens for my T3i.  I only have the kit lens as of now and always rent lenses whenever I do portrait sessions (fortunately The Lens Depot is five minutes down the road from where I live).  I've rented the new 40mm 2.8, the 50 1.4, and the 85 1.8.  I really enjoyed all of them, especially the colors of the 85 1.8.  However, it did feel a little long on my crop camera.  Overall, what are your suggestions for a good portrait lens.  I mainly do outdoor stuff and am not in the studio at all.  Here is a link to some of my previous work:

As of now, I'm leaning towards the 50 1.4.  Price-wise I'd like to stay under 500, yet there is a part of me that wants to save up for something nicer (like a 35L or 50L).

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 6D Center Cross-Type ?
« on: September 17, 2012, 05:48:34 PM »
Looking at the specs of the new 6D on Canon's website, I find myself a little confused.  It states:

AF Points
11 points

Center: cross-type at f/5.6; vertical line-sensitive at f/2.8.

Upper and lower AF points: vertical line-sensitive AF at f/5.6.

Other AF points: Horizontal line-sensitive AF at f/5.6.

So does this mean that the center point is a cross-type point at 5.6 or 2.8?  Currently, I own a T3i and I know the center point become a cross-type point when using f/2.8 or faster lenses.  Otherwise, with my kit lens it acts a single type focus point.  I use the center point only and usually get recompose after gaining focus.  The 6D looks appealing if the cross-type point is activated at 5.6, but I'm just not sure on the wording here.  Any ideas?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / $2,700 5D III?!?
« on: August 25, 2012, 12:15:55 PM »
Saw this posted on DPReview today in their forums.  The seller has good feedback, however the warranty looks like it could be an issue.  It says Canon USA warranty at one point in the description, yet in another part it says no manufactured warranty.  Are they even making money off of these?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Film Camera & Film Recommendations
« on: June 28, 2012, 12:31:31 PM »
As the title says, I am looking for a film camera suggestions.  I would like a Canon and one that works with my current EF lenses (50mm 1.8 and a few others).  I'm not sure what my budget is.  I know there is the 1V that I could find used for a decent price, but what do you guys recommend....

My first SLR was a Rebel T3i so i am not familiar with film based camera, however I would like to learn.  I know there are things that film can do that digital still cannot.

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to everyone's perspective on a good Canon Film Camera and their film of choice :)

EOS Bodies / T3i (or T2i) to 5D Mark III
« on: April 09, 2012, 09:27:50 AM »
Anyone here upgrade from a T3i (or T2i) to a 5D Mark III?  I currently own a T3i and am wondering what the differences would be.  I don't like shotting above ISO 800 (and oftentimes above 400) in RAW and am curious as to what the equivilent roughly in the 5DIII.  I went to a local photo shop and took some test shots comparing the two and from my rough unscientific test, I felt that the 5D's lower ISO's were much better, but 1600 was roughly the same as my 800.  Anything below 800 on the 5DIII was much better than my T3i.  So I know this may seem like a noobish question, but...

What other benefits are you guys noticing over your old crop bodies when upgrading to the 5DIII?  Is the general IQ much better at low ISO's comapred to your old crop bodies with the same lenses?

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / 430EX II Going Out?
« on: March 20, 2012, 11:33:49 PM »
Is Canon going to stop producing the 430 EX II.  Called my local Best Buy to go and get one tomorrow and they said they were not receiving any more stock of them since Canon has a new flash out (the 600 I presume).  Anyone hear or know anything about this?  would it be a bad idea to get a 430ex II now?

EOS Bodies / 5D Mk. III Best Buy Pre-Order
« on: March 10, 2012, 09:34:58 PM »
Anyone pre-order their new 5D's through Best Buy?

They have excellent financing and it's something I'm considering.  I haven't pre-ordered yet so I know I probably missed the initial shipment.  I usually buy big ticket items from them and have had a good experience the past few years.

Also, any chances Best Buy will have some at the store on March 22?

Lenses / Next 5D Kit Lens

Just curious as to what people's thoughts are concerning the next kit lens for the new 5D series that should be announced soon.  If you think a prime lens or other, state what you think it may be  ;)

Lenses / Kit Lens to New 24-70
« on: February 12, 2012, 02:47:16 PM »
Hello CR Followers,

I currently own a Canon T3i and have the kit lens (18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS II) that it came with. I've considered upgrading to a higher quality lens and the 24-70 has come to mind.  With the recent announcement of the Mark II version, I'm not too sure where to go.  I know production samples are not out to the general public so performance wise, we are simply left to look at the MTF charts.

So, money not really being an option and based upon what we know thus far, is pre-ordering the new 24-70 worth it?  If it doesn't perform much better than the old, I"ll pocket the difference and buy a new monitor.  2300 seems steep for a lens, but if it performs similar to the 70-200 f/2.8 II lens, then I'm all for it.  I've borrowed that lens before and was amazed at it's IQ and performance.

I know that the lens is not out yet so this is all speculative.  Just would like to know people's opinions and their thoughts concerning the purchase if they are in the same or similar boat as I.

Software & Accessories / Looking for a good monitor
« on: December 28, 2011, 04:55:16 PM »
Hello,

I was wondering if I could get some input from fellow Canon users about a good photography monitor.  Currently, I am leaning towards Apple's new Thunderbolt Display.  I own a Macbook Air and this would be a good set up.  However, I recently found out about Dell Ultrasharp monitors.  They have a 27" model and a 30" model that look nice.

So, what do you guys/gals use and what are your thoughts on the Thunderbolt and Ultrasharp displays?  I have about 1200'ish to spend and possible more if I wait a couple more months to save.   I currently own an HP 2310m 1080p monitor but would like something better.

Also, what would be a good calibration tool for good color accuracy?

Lenses / New Photographer. Need suggestions :)
« on: December 15, 2011, 12:33:23 PM »
Hello CR,

I've been following CR for a couple months now since I bought my T3i and have delved into the world of photography.  I've done some wildlife photography recently and some portraits and have discovered I really enjoy portraits and events.

I recently shot my brother's (with my wife's help) engagement photos with my new camera and a 50 1.8 lens I borrowed from a friend. They came out pretty good (Well at least he thought they did) and asked if I would shoot his wedding.  While I have no experience shooting weddings (and clearly told him so:), I said I would.  So...

What lenses do you suggest I use.  I know I can borrow the 50 1.8 from a friend and she'll let me borrow her 28-70 2.8L lens.  I'll probably borrow her 60D and shot with my wife (She'll use the T3i).

Also, any other suggestions for a budding wedding photographer.  Thanks in advance.

Mike
