Lenses / Canon 50 1.4 Focus Ring Not Smooth
« on: April 24, 2013, 02:28:49 PM »
Maybe this has been discussed prior.  With the latest deal, I picked up my first Canon 50 1.4.  In autofocus, it's great.  However, one thing that bothers me is the focus ring... Whether I am focusing manually or full time focus in autofocus, I noticed that there was a friction when I turn the focus ring.  Along with the friction, I can hear some sound as the focus ring turns.  Unlike the 24-105 or 70-200 or the shorty 40 where the focus ring was smooth like fluid and silent, this one has a drag and some sound as though it was rubbing against something.  I realize that the 50 1.4 does not have USM ring type like the other ones.   For instance, without evening turning on the camera, if I hold the camera on one hand and then start turning the focus ring on the lens, I can hear the sound and feel the drag.   Is this normal or is this a bad copy?

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / Canon 1.4X III vs Canon 2.0X III
« on: April 12, 2013, 02:13:29 PM »
I am looking at both the Canon 1.4X III and Canon 2.0X III.  What I am confused is why they are both at the same price.  Been reading some reviews on the web, but given that both are the same price, which one to choose?  I am aware of the loss of 1 or 2 stops of light as well as image quality being not as sharp.  I have a 7D and 5D3 with  70-200 2.8 II.  I would love the notion of extending the reach to 640mm on my 7D, but I don't know if that means that my image quality would suffer greatly or settle for the 1.4X and be limited to 448mm.  Or I can settle for 280mm or 400mm on my 5D3.  My intent for the extra reach would be for wild life.

Any advise?  Thanks in advance.

Lighting / Canon 580 EX ii Lock-Release not working
« on: December 27, 2012, 02:21:04 PM »
Hi... I have a two years old 580 EX ii... Over the weekend, I was taking pictures and when done, I tried taking it off the camera.  Press the release button and normally, then I can slide it to the left to release it so that I can smoothly pull it out of the camera hot shoe.  I pressed the button and then noticed that the lock release slider wasn't moving.  Normally, I hold the camera on my right hand and then use the left hand to do it.  I noticed a tension.  I tried again... What?  It wouldn't move.  I then hold down the camera against the floor, left hand on the flash, right hand on pressing the release button.  Still didn't move.  After a while, I was able to get it off.    I was confused.  I put it away.

10 minutes later, my wife wanted additional pictures.  I put it back on.  Putting it goes fine.  When done, I couldn't take it off again.  I struggled with it after some times, and managed to take it off.  That was on a 5D3.

Next day, I tried the flash on my 7D.  Took two shots with it.  Then tried taking it off.  This was worse.  It was like it was super glue onto my 7D.  After numerous attempt, I got it off.

Anyone has experienced this behavior?  Up unitl now, I have no issue with it and it performs flawlessly.

Software & Accessories / Black Label Photo Satchel Bag, Large $75 at B&H

Hi... Any comments on this bag?  Good or bad...

Looking for a new bag to hold 5D3 (no grip), 24-105 and 70-200.  Of course, it would ideal if it can hold the 580EXII flash, too, but not likely with this bag.

From B&H:

Any other comparable bag?

Lenses / Red Ring Broke Off on 24-105 lens
« on: November 25, 2012, 02:05:52 PM »
Hi... I have a 24-105 for two years now and yesterday the red ring just broke off.  Just came off for no reason.  Didn't drop the lens or camera.  I took the camera out of my camera bag  to shoot and noticed something out of place.  Looked at it closer and it was the red ring.  It's made of hard plastic.

Any ideas of how to get another red ring?

Lenses / Canon 10-22 vs Canon 17-40
« on: December 23, 2011, 04:23:01 PM »
I am at a cross road and need some advice.  Currently shooting with a 7D.  I have the 24-105 and 70-200.  Looking for my third len and was looking for a wide angle.  Both the Canon 10-22 and 17-40 are at an incredible price at the moment.  10-22 at $649 and 17-40 at $705.  I do plan going to FF in  about two years.  I was thinking of going with the 10-22 for now and when I do upgrade to 5DIII then sell it and get the 17-40.  Or I can go with the 17-40 and be FF proof.  Any comments/advice are greatly appreciated.
