EOS Bodies - For Stills / Canon Surveys for 5D Mark III
« on: November 08, 2012, 09:06:52 AM »
So I got my feedback request e-mail for the 5D Mk. III from Canon today. Thought a couple of questions were interesting. Firstly:

Quote
How desirable would it be for you to have the following features in your future digital SLR? Please rank your first, second and third most important features:

1. Higher resolution (more megapixels)
2. Higher dynamic range (shadow/highlight detail)
3. Faster shooting speed
4. Bigger buffer memory
5. Wider ISO speeds
6. Larger/brighter/more shooting information in viewfinder
7. Faster Auto Focus (when shooting by viewfinder)
8. More accurate Auto Focus (when shooting by viewfinder)
9. AF performance (when shooting by liveview)
10. More Auto Focus points

Second interesting question:

How desirable would it be for you to have the following features in your future digital SLR? Please rank your first, second and third most important feature.

1. More compact & lightweight
2. Built-in Flash (with wireless flash control)
3. Vari-angle LCD screen
4. GPS
5. Touchscreen LCD
6. Wireless communication function
7. Better weather resistance
8. Performance of LCD (size/resolution)

I guess it's Canon sussing out the perception of the competition, but it might give some idea as to the future of the 5D. Make of it what you will.

Lenses / Could a 35mm f/1.2 L be in testing? (pic)
« on: June 20, 2012, 09:56:05 AM »
This is just a bit of fun, because this is certainly a typo but it's fun to speculate.  I was browsing Jeff Ascough's Canon profile and came across this shot.

EF35mm f/1.2L huh?  :o

Lenses / Suggestions for making my gear uglier
« on: May 09, 2012, 11:28:34 AM »
Bit of a strange topic, I know. I'm planning on a bit of travelling this summer. My gear is all insured so this isn't life or death, but I'd like to make my shiny red ring lenses a little less attractive.  So I thought 'hey, why not [carefully] cover them in gaffer tape?' ... Opinions?  The main thing I'd like to avoid is leaving a sticky residue on the lenses, but I'm told gaffer tape is designed to avoid this.  I hope I don't sound like a madman here.  :o

So... enough time has passed for a lot of users to have calibrated their 5D Mark IIIs.  I'm left wondering, out of curiosity's sake, how the new AFMA works. Let me expand on that...

With the new AF system in the 5D3/1DX, users can now provide 2 AFMA values; one for the long and one for the wide end of zoom lenses. Let's say for argument's sake my 70-200 worked best with +4 at 70mm and +12 at 200mm - does the camera scale the AFMA across the zoom range? (i.e. automatically guesses +8 at 135mm, halfway between the two extremes?).

I'm not sure how anyone would have this information, but I'd love to be enlightened.

Software & Accessories / Advice for first graphics tablet
« on: March 25, 2012, 07:58:46 AM »
I've been putting off the purchase of a graphics tablet for some time, for a couple of reasons (they're quite expensive, mixed reviews for anything but the really expensive ones, fear of the unknown etc.) but have decided I must stop editing with a mouse because I feel like it's taking me far too long to mask properly in CS5.  Does anyone have any recommendations for a graphics pad?  I'm a firm believer in buying something that's meant to last and not to compromise on functionality - after all, even the cheaper graphics tablets are expensive.  I'm aware that Wacom are the leading brand in this line of equipment so that's what I've been looking at so far.

EOS Bodies / No RC-6 love for 1 series bodies?
« on: February 23, 2012, 09:52:24 AM »
Does anyone have any ideas why compatibility with the infrared RC-6 remote was omitted from previous 1 series bodies?  Is the RC-6 seen as an "unprofessional" solution? Line of sight can be a pain, but this little wireless tool is so handy when you don't have time to set up a cable release.

Who knows, maybe Canon have kept it a secret that the 1D X has built-in wireless capability to control (and be triggered) the new speedlite. Yeah, dream on...  ::)

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / New speedlites - Am I the only one...
« on: February 22, 2012, 04:44:52 PM »
With the upcoming [CR3] announcements... am I the only one who's equally excited by the idea of a new speedlite with radio signalling built in?? The creative possibilities without spending literally thousands of dollars on expensive ETTL third party triggers - I'm nearly salivating.

Perhaps I'm getting a bit ahead of myself... it is still a rumour!

The only problem I face now is I currently have 3 580 EX IIs - Canon releasing a radio add-on for legacy speedlites really would be wishful thinking, wouldn't it?

EOS Bodies / Ziv Koren on shooting with the EOS-1D X
« on: February 17, 2012, 12:43:56 PM »
Made aware of this story by http://www.the-digital-picture.com

Link Ziv Koren's experiences with the 1D X: http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/education/technical/ziv_koren_eos_1dx.do

Bear in mind this is an "interview" with Canon Professional Network, so just treat it as an advertisement really.

Still, he does mention (and more importantly, they do print)

From my testing, and looking at the images I produced, I think that [ISO] 25,600 is about the same in terms of noise performance as the EOS-1D Mark IV is when shooting around 4,000 to 5,000 ISO. As such, I’d be totally happy to shoot at ISO 25,600 on the EOS-1D X without having to worry about it. Even if I had to go higher, I wouldn’t see it is a major problem because the files really are that good.

But of course, this is in JPEG only...

Lenses / Refurbished 24-70 via Canon UK @ eBay
« on: February 08, 2012, 09:15:37 AM »
In the wake of the 24-70 II announcement, at least a few of us are thinking of buying the original 24-70mm.  I just thought I'd give a heads-up to those of you in the UK that there is a newly listed Canon refurbished lens on eBay for £900

Link here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Canon-Lens-EF-24-70-2-8L-USM-Refurbished-/270910416491?pt=UK_Lenses_Filters_Lenses&hash=item3f1384e66b

Personally I ended up buying a second hand copy for £835. The next lowest price for a new copy seems to be £930 from Amazon, but those are grey imports.

Lenses / Canon 16-35 L version I vs II
« on: February 02, 2012, 09:20:43 AM »
I'll be moving to full frame within a few months and I'll be looking at adding an UWA lens to my kit. What I can't seem to figure out is the benefit of version II of this lens versus the old 16-35 f/2.8. Resolution chart comparisons seem to suggest that they each perform better at different focal lengths, both lenses are weather sealed, both have roughly the same design...

Also, version II has 82mm filter threads, an awkward size for sharing.

... Was there a particular reason for updating this lens?  :o  The only reason I'm currently considering version II over I is the mark I still sells for about 70% of the price of a new mark II, and I'm generally suspicious of people selling lenses on eBay.

Retailers are continuing to take pre-orders and presumably will do so until the release date. Based on past experience, what proportion of these will be delivered on release?  After that I'm guessing it's first-come-first-serve, but for how long is demand likely to be greater than supply? Just curious. Speculation welcome!
