Photography Technique / Game Ranches for photography
« on: November 18, 2014, 05:29:38 PM »
Only recently I've become aware of game ranches for photography in the US.

I watched a dpreview of the 7dII at a game ranch in Montana, DD, I think. When I looked at the fees, it was like $350 for 90 minute experience photographing a prime animal such as a snow leopard.

In the Bay Area, there is a safari place near Santa Rosa, and I think San Diego Zoo has a wildlife park.

What game ranches have you photographed at? Prices? Positive/Negatives?

Note to Admins: please consider a section such as, Where to photograph

Thx

I follow Jeff Cable on FB. He photographs the Olympics, some motor sports, hockey and Bat Mitzvahs

Multiple vendors have provided him gear to give away, so there is a drawing

Any tips for photographing sky-filling BIFs at sunset?

Birds, ducks, geese etc are arriving around the Sacramento National Wildlife Reserve. At around sunset they take off en mass for the surrounding rice fields for some munchies.

Should I focus close to the ground as they take off? All the BIF at sunset pics I've seen are silhouette of birds against either a dark sky, or, if lucky, the sun as it sets

I will be using 60D, 70-200 with 2x III teleconverter

Software & Accessories / Source of Sci-fi digital backgrounds?
« on: November 05, 2014, 11:28:26 AM »
I will photographing a Cosplay event at the end of the month in Fremont and was thinking of using chromakey background and then insert a Sci-fi background.

I've seen the DVDs on ebay and Amazon, but can anyone recommend a specific source or DVD they have used? Thx

Post Processing / "Painting" plug-ins and stand alone apps
« on: September 24, 2014, 06:34:20 PM »
This is one of my first uses of Topaz's Impression, recently released. I've used other painting aps such as the ones from Alien's Snap Art, and DAP's stand alone. I haven't found a good, at least for me, tutorial for Painter.

This was taken with 60D, 70-200mm 2.8 (probably with 2x); 1/1600; f6.3; ISO 400

Location was Pescadero, CA

I have a 6D. Looking for product suggestions for a wireless shutter trigger & wireless flash trigger combo.

Flashes will be on manual. Don't need to worry about grouping flashes

Goal: not be tied down to camera body while talking to model

Don't really want any app-based trigger solution. Thx

Software & Accessories / Rastering of image in CC PS
« on: July 26, 2014, 04:40:13 PM »
I'm probably using the wrong term, rasterizing, but I'm trying to understand what is happening to my image

Using CC Photoshop, I select the sky, apply field blur, click ok, and bring it back into PS. The sky that has been blurred is wavy, like gradients.

Any tips would be appreciated

Thanks

Is anyone using large softboxes, over 40 inches, for their speedlights - which brand/model are you using. I'm looking for one above 40 inches, and have a limited budget

Third Party Manufacturers / What am I doing wrong?
« on: January 13, 2014, 01:25:30 PM »
When I switched to the Manfrotto 057 Magnesium Ball Head with Q5 Quick Release, I expected the droops to go away.

On top of it I use a 6D with 70-200, and sometimes with the 2x.

I was set up this weekend for some countryside landscapes, and had to keep framing higher than the image I wanted because of the continual drooping.

Any thoughts?
