Lighting / EX600RT with 7D and 60D HSS
« on: September 03, 2012, 02:08:30 PM »
I am reading conflicting information so am seeking some clarification.  Will HSS mode work on my 7D and 60D with the new 600RT's in radio mode or do the flashes revert to optical mode to do HSS?  I currently have a local buyer for my Pocket Wizard set and two 430EXII's and my intention was to get two of the new 600's with the money from my sale thinking the new set up would be easier to use.  But I don't want to lose HSS in radio mode.  I am reading some posts on POTN where they are stating that they are getting HSS with the older cameras in radio mode but I am concerned if they are using them indoors that perhaps optical mode is being used by the flashes and the users are mistakenly assuming radio mode is still working.  Any observations here regarding this issue?

Lenses / Need sharp wide-open
« on: June 28, 2012, 07:39:04 PM »
I am having a challenge finding a lens in the 24-35 mm range that is sharp at its widest aperture.  I have a 60D and a 7D and I am looking for a lens for capturing family and friends indoors in both still and video.  I am not having any luck.  I have FoCal software so have been able to analyze lenses with it to confirm best aperture.  I had hopes for the new pancake but, despite all the wonderfully sharp images being posted at f/2.8, the copy I had was optimal at f/4.5-5.6.  Today, I just tried the new 24mm f/2.8 IS, and it is quite soft at 2.8 and FoCal is recommending 4.0-5.6 for sharpness which matches what I was seeing in my images.  So this too shall go back to the store.  Am I asking for something that does not exist?  Is there not a fast prime that is sharp at its widest aperture?  One of my other problems is that I don't have the steadiest of hands, so I think I really need image stabilization for spontaneous handheld people shooting.

Lenses / Yet another "what lens?" question
« on: February 15, 2012, 12:14:51 PM »
Current set up: 60D (yes, I regret not getting the 7D ::)) with 10-22, 15-85, 100 macro, 70-300L.  Main interests are wildlife, birds, landscape, macro so happy with my lens collection.  Problem: I am now viewed as "the photographer" in the family so am expected to get general family shots plus we have 2 fast-moving grandkids.  Nothing in my lenses is good for indoor/lowlight photos or videos.  Was going to ditch the 15-85 and get the 17-55 which on the used market should cost me a net of $300. But, now the rumors of the new primes 24 and 28 have me second-guessing.  Adding one of these for the "family" situations would cost me $800 rather than $300 because I would need to keep the 15-85.  Any thoughts to share out there??
