Third Party Manufacturers / At least we have Canon quality control
« on: November 22, 2012, 11:31:43 PM »
I stopped by my favourite hang out, my local camera store, the other day. I perhaps spend a little too much time there since I appear to be on a first name basis with literally every employee there... but I digress.

While chatting to the people to whom I like to give lots of money in exchange for fancy photographic toys, I asked them how the 5D mk III was doing against the D800. The answer actually surprised me, given the doomsday prophecies you hear around here. Apparently, they've had more returns for the D800, and the D4 and D600 to a lesser extent, than any other camera. I know the left-focusing problem on the D800 was one of the big ones, as was the dust in the D600, but apparently lots of little things have been going wrong, too. It would appear that Nikon's quality control might be in need of a shakeup.

My purpose here isn't to light a Nikon flag on fire and piss boiling oil into its eyes. I actually have an enormous respect for Nikon and have long maintained that the photographer makes the camera, not the other way around. Hell, I've seen some pretty jaw-droppingly amazing stuff come out of the Pentax K series that makes anything I've ever shot with my 5D mk III look like a pile of crap. My point, rather, is to express a thought I've held for some time now: balance. It seems to me that there's been a balance between Nikon and Canon for a while now. There always seems to be some kind of equalising factor that restores this balance so that, in the end, neither has such a huge advantage that tips the balance too far to one side.

Anyway, given some of the posts I've read about how Canon is dying and Nikon is the glorious saviour that will lead us all to the promised land, I thought that a bit of a reality check might be in order.

Software & Accessories / What is wrong with my settings?
« on: November 02, 2012, 07:33:39 PM »
So I calibrated my display (using an eye-one) and while I'm satisfied for photo editing and viewing, my internet seems to dull colours significantly, but only with certain photos. However, if I download the photos and view them (using irfanview) they look fine. Here are some screen caps showing this phenomenon along with my colour management settings.

Software & Accessories / Colour consistency
« on: August 31, 2012, 11:27:35 PM »
I'm curious to hear what people do in regards to getting consistent colour across prints and various monitors. I'm by no means pro, but I've got an online gallery and I want my photos to be as consistent as possible between monitors. I just got my brand spanking new laptop (Lenovo T530) a few weeks ago and am completely gobstruck by the colours on this thing (calibrated using an eye one) They're extremely vibrant and it's an utter joy to look at photos on it. But while things look awesome on my new laptop, they look really dull and boring on the other monitors (not calibrated) in the house.

How does one achieve consistency? Is that even possible? Would it make sense to edit photos for posting online using one of the other monitors and then use the new laptop's screen for prints?

Software & Accessories / Laptop for photo editing
« on: July 24, 2012, 06:38:37 PM »
It turns out that my current laptop can't really handle the images on my 5D3, so I'm looking to get a new one. I had bought a new one and got a hell of a deal on it, but I had to send it back to the manufacturer since there was something majorly wrong with it. Now a certain part is back ordered and there's no time line on when I'll actually get the replacement. So, I'm considering just trying to get a refund and get a different one. Here are my various options.

(My biggest concern is whether it will be able to handle 126MB 16 bit TIFF files in Photoshop CS5 using the Nik plugins (sharpener and noise reduction) at a decent speed (doesn't have to be super fast, just decent))

I've only listed relevant specs, as everything else is pretty much the same. I understand graphics cards really don't have any impact on photoshop (to my knowledge), but I've included them anyway)

Option 1: $1700 (this is the back ordered one)
-processor: Intel Core i7-2860QM (2.50GHz, 8MB cache L3, 1333MHz)
-graphics: NVIDIA Quadro NVS4200M Optimus technology (1GB)
-memory: 8GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (2DIMM)

Option 2: $2600
-processor: Intel Core i7-3820QM (2.70GBz, 8M Cache)
-graphics: NVIDIA NVs 5400M Graphics with Optimus Technology (1GB DDR3 memory)
-memory: 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (1 DIMM)

Option 3: $2300
-processor: Intel Core i7-3820QM (2.70GBz, 8M Cache)
-graphics: NVIDIA NVs 5400M Graphics with Optimus Technology (1GB DDR3 memory)
-memory: 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (2 DIMM)

Option 4: $2600
-processor: Intel Core i7-3820QM (2.70GBz, 8M Cache)
-graphics: NVIDIA Quadro K1000M Graphics with 2GB DDR3 Memory
-memory: 8 GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (2 DIMM)

Your thoughts? I'm particularly curious about memory. How much do you think I reasonably need? Would it be better to go with 1 DIMM or 2 DIMM?

 Any input would be appreciated.

Software & Accessories / DOF Calculator app
« on: June 17, 2012, 11:21:46 PM »
http://www.dofmaster.com/iphone.html

Here's a neat app for those without sufficient experience to be able to eyeball or calculate depth of field off the tops of their heads. Basically, you input your distance from target, focal length, aperture, and it will calculate the nearest and furthest acceptable focus. It could be a useful tool, depending on what you shoot. It could also help you learn DOF. Anyway, I thought I'd pass this on.

Lenses / Lenses to shoot the Milky Way. Is a 17-40 enough?
« on: April 29, 2012, 01:49:22 AM »
Just like the title says, I've always been awed by photos of the Milky Way and have long wanted to try it out. For the last four years I've been using a 5D1 and all my lenses are f/4.

But now I've got my 5D3 and am curious to know if my 17-40 is up for the job, or whether I should invest in a 16-35 or a 14mm 2.8. Obviously, the best way to find out would be to go and actually take some shots, but lacking a car makes that a bit difficult.

I intend to do some testing, but I'll have to wait until July when I do my 14 day self-supported cycling trip from Calgary to Banff to Jasper and back, but I thought I'd get your input. I'm going to rent either the 16-35 or the 14mm 2.8, and am curious to know which one you think would be better suited.

My gut tells me to go with the 16-35 and then sell my 17-40. I'm usually on a bicycle or hiking trip when I shoot, so simply swapping out the 17-40 for the 16-35 makes sense simply to keep the weight down. After all, it's easier to carry two lenses than three when weight is an issue. But, if the IQ of the 14mm 2.8 is much better than the 16-35, I'd consider it instead.

I'm curious to know your thoughts.

Software & Accessories / Chances of Lightroom 3.0 update for 5D3?
« on: April 06, 2012, 08:30:41 PM »
To my knowledge, this has about a snowball's chance in hell of actually happening, but I figured I'd pose the question. It would be nice.

So, what are your thoughts? Think there's any reasonable chance?

Software & Accessories / Need hard case for 4x6 Lee filters
« on: March 30, 2012, 07:22:29 PM »
Most of my shooting takes place while on multi-day hiking or cycling trips. Consequently, I'd like a hard case to keep my Lee 4x6 filters safe, since they'll likely be squished into a backpack or pannier. I've checked out the pelican cases, but there aren't any that are the right size. The 1120 is too small whereas everything else I've come across is too big. I don't need it to be water tight, just made of hard plastic. Something about the same dimensions as a DVD case but a cm or so thicker would be ideal. Bonus if it can fit the holder and adapter ring.

Any ideas? Been scouring the internet for half an hour and have yet to come up with anything.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Recommend settings for my new 5D3
« on: March 28, 2012, 07:19:59 PM »
Picked up my 5D3 last week and I'm curious about what the optimal settings would be, considering I shoot landscape and nature almost exclusively. I do all my own retouching using Lightroom, Photoshop, and the Nik plugins for sharpening and noise reduction, so I'm largely curious about settings that affect noise and sharpness. I'm under the assumption that external NR and sharpening is better than doing it in-camera.

The settings I'm curious about are:

-Auto lighting optimizer
-Lens aberration correction
-Picture style  (currently use "faithful," although I used "standard" on my 5D1)
-High ISO NR
-Long exposure NR
-Highlight tone priority (I've noticed this is restricted to certain ISO settings)

I've been busy micro focus adjusting my lenses (all two of them) and was using this technique to get a baseline to work from http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/cameras/1ds3_af_micoadjustment.html  (the first one on the page. The difference on the focusing ring between the live view manual focus ideal and the auto focus ideal was very tiny, it moved about 1mm. Then I tried taking various sets of test shots, experimenting with micro focus adjusting in camera by -1, 0, and +1. I see no appreciable difference between the images. I did see an appreciable difference if I adjusted to -2 or +2; the images looked slightly out of focus.

My question is: is adjusting by -1 or +1 enough to see an appreciable difference? If they all look the same, should I just stick with 0 (no adjustment)?

Software & Accessories / Microsoft Synctoy for backup
« on: March 24, 2012, 12:21:56 AM »
For months I've been trying to find a way to get my external backup hard-drives synchronized without having to micromanage files manually. I stumbled across Synctoy from Microsoft which surprisingly fits my needs perfectly; it's exactly what I was looking for. Basically, you pick the source folder, the destination folder, and then it syncs the two folders exactly.

I tested it out on two little thumb drives before using it on my photo backups. It seems to work pretty well.

My biggest problem until now was trying to keep all the drives up to date and exactly the same, but it was frustrating trying to get them to match by just manually dragging and dropping folders around.

This pleases me.

EOS Bodies / Why I think the 5D mkIII suits landscape photographers
« on: March 07, 2012, 12:52:35 AM »
There's been a lot of talk about how the 5D mkIII doesn't benefit landscape photographers. I searched for an appropriate thread to post this, but none of them seemed right. So here I am starting my first thread. (be gentle)

Personally, I think the 5D mkIII specs suit the needs of landscape photographers. Or, at the very least, it suits my needs as a landscape/nature photographer.

My reasoning is thus: I'm often shooting in the morning or evening (golden hour) in low light at an f-stop between f/8 and f/11 and quite often I'll be using various filters from polarizers to graduated ND filters. This means that in order to get decent shutter speed I generally have to crank the ISO up, but I want as clean an image as possible. So the 5D mkIII's improvement on the mkII's ISO will be a great help.

If the 5D mkIII was a high MP camera like many people wish, then I think the low light capabilities would be reduced and my early morning/late evening shots would suffer for it. I think 22MP is high resolution enough but without getting too high so as to hurt low light ISO.

I currently shoot a 5D classic and, quite frankly, it's 12MP sensor gives me more than enough resolution to work with, even if I'm making larger prints. The 22MP is going to be far more than I even know what to do with.

So I think what we've been given is a great balance.

So at the very least, it suits my needs as a landscape and nature photographer. Others may differ, but spec wise it seems like the right camera for me.

Site Information / Question about posting an image
« on: February 21, 2012, 09:57:13 PM »
Long time lurker and newbie so far as posting goes.

Anyway, I'd like to post some of my photos here. I've got a DeviantArt account where I've got them all posted. Is it cool to post here a thumbnail with a link to the full size version over at DA? Just thought I'd make sure... don't want make it look like I'm just advertising my DA gallery.
