Lenses / Environmental Portrait Lens?

What lens would be a good environmental portrait lens. I am shooting  Crop Sensor (for the time being) and want a good lens for environmental portraits. I would love to invest in a 35mm 1.4L But just don't see that any time soon.

What would you reccommend?

I am getting ready to start revamping my kit for weddings and as i was thinking about my kit I was just thinking how different photographers can get completely different results from similar gear. As i thought about it more I got curious what you all find as your faithful setup. I am thinking of investing in more primes for low light but not sure if I can completely rid myself of zooms.

What are your faithful kits and why does it make the difference to you?

I am currently selling *(sold) my 70-200 f/4L IS (but can borrow it as i need) so I only have a 16-35mm for "normal" shooting(besides the kit 28-135 from my 50d). Would trading my 16-35 for the 24-70 and $200 be a trade you would be interedted in?

I currently have a 70-200 f/4 is and am looking to upgrade... The wedding season is right around the bend...

I am looking at a 70-200 2.8 is on Craigs List for like 1300 or a NEW 70-200 2.8 IS II...

the NEW lens costs almost double therefore I would have to wait  almost a year to buy it.

 Should I wait for the II next year or upgrade to the I before the season starts?
