I tried to submit request for group purchase on canonpricewatch but I will be charged state sales tax because I live in NY. Then I look more closely and it seems that most major camera shops are in NY. Why is that?

And does anyone know of any good stores that are outside of NY? I only know Beach camera and buydig. But I think they are essentially the same company. I'd like to know a couple more to compare.

Lenses / How to protect gear from fine sand?
« on: February 25, 2014, 03:03:49 PM »
I'll be visiting Antelope Canyon in Arizona in the summer.  I've heard that the red sand is so fine that it gets in the lens very easily.  For those who visited Utah and Az, any suggestions for protection?  I wonder if a clear plastic bag would be enough to keep the sand out. Thanks in advance.

Landscape / Grand Canyon, North or South Rim?
« on: February 21, 2014, 05:54:01 PM »
I'm not sure if I should post in this section.  Here's my question and request.  I've been to South Rim before and am considering the North Rim this year, but it seems that there are not many facilities available.  For people who have been to both, is the north side worth it? Which side in your opinion is more beautiful?   Could you show your best Grand Canyon shots, North and/or South?  Many thanks.

It's mainly for secondary backup of my pictures.  What brand would be great and what brand should I stay away from?  I already have one WD. Now considering Seagate. Many thanks.

Photography Technique / Tips for using CPL
« on: January 20, 2014, 11:31:26 AM »
I'm new to CPL. Bought a decent one (b+w xs-pro 82mm) and tried it the other day.  I rotated the front such that my foreground appeared more saturated with less glare. What I noticed was that the sky was partially/unevenly darkened. I was not using an ultrawide lens. I was at 24mm. The sun was more or less over my right shoulder, 90 degrees to my camera axis. How can I saturate the sky more evenly? I'm sure it's a matter of technique and not a fault of my CPL, and I'm hoping someone could shed some light. Thanks for your help.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / What camera for a mom
« on: December 12, 2013, 11:29:05 AM »
My wife's friend saw pictures of my wife and my son on FB and it makes her want to buy a camera to take pictures of her daughter.

Instead of telling her to buy a 6D and a sigma 35, what should I tell her? Her budget is $500. No experience with DSLR.  She wants to do both indoor and outdoor photography.  She's open to any camera brand.  Perhaps a refurbished SL1 and a 50 1.8?

Lenses / Recent 24-70ii buyers, did you get white box or black/gray box?
« on: December 10, 2013, 09:34:41 AM »
Got a 24-70ii 3 weeks ago. The box was black and gray instead of white with red stripe. Initially I thought maybe Canon was switching to new design.  Today I got my new toy--100L. It's the familiar white with red.

I got my 24-70ii thru buydig.com.  it came with usa warranty card. The lens works great with no clicking noise. It's a pretty bad idea to return just because of the box, right?  But still, it's weird. ..

Software & Accessories / Any happy Marumi filters customers?
« on: December 04, 2013, 07:24:52 PM »
Just received a 82mm Marumi DHG super CPL. Didn't try it yet because I'm having second thoughts about it.  I'm thinking if I should get the very best (b+w) instead but will cost twice as much.  There's not too many reviews abt Marumi filters out there.  I hope there are current users on this forum who can share their experience.  Thx.

Software & Accessories / Good idea to upgrade to LR5? Regrets?
« on: December 02, 2013, 10:42:40 AM »
Been hearing problems about LR5. I regret upgrading to Maverick OS because I think it created more problems than it solved.  LR4 seems fine to me now. I'm concerned that upgrading to 5 will give me the same ordeal as my Mac OS. Any current LR5 users out there?  Comments? Worth the trouble?

Software & Accessories / Another question about filters
« on: November 30, 2013, 09:56:05 PM »
Are warming or color filters still relevant? While the effects of a polarizer may be difficult to replicate with software, isn't warming effect kind of easy to do in LR? Or am I missing something here?

What's your opinion on Singh Ray's Gold-N-Blue? Can I use a polarizer and then add color in LR later on? I've been watching some clips on youtube and this filter seems to be pretty amazing. But then again I can't help wondering if I could achieve the same effect with software. I do believe that I will get this filter at some point, and being able to nail the shot on the spot does make me feel good. However I would like to understand, technically speaking, what can and cannot be done with photoshop.

So far, I only feel that as far as filters are concerned, only CPL, ND and grad ND filters are absolute must. What do you think? Thanks for your help. I'm new to filters so don't mind me asking basic stuffs.

I am looking for a system that would work on both my 24-70 and 17-40 lenses. Is there anything that won't give vignetting on my ultrawide?  I also want something that would let me manually adjust where the transition would be.  I've heard that there are hard, soft transition.  What type should i get?  I don't have a big budget.  Ideally something around $100 would be nice. Thanks for your help.

Lenses / Just got my 24-70 2.8 L ii. Got some questions.
« on: November 21, 2013, 08:52:01 AM »
Got it yesterday. First surprise. It may or may not be a good one. The box is black and grey, not white with a red strip I was expecting. The box still has canon logo, UPC code, serial number, etc. Does it mean anything? There is a canon USA warranty card with the correct serial number. I got it through Buydig.com.  I just want to make sure I could get the $300 rebate. Forgive me if my question sounds ignorant. I don't usually buy new.

Second question. What's the purpose of adding a lock for 24mm? Any real world utility for it?

Third. The ring feels stiff. It should loosen up with more use, right?

Lenses / what filter for 24-70 ii 2.8?
« on: November 18, 2013, 10:28:21 AM »
I can't believe I bought it over the weekend. Anyway, what filter should I put on? Do I need a slim one? Thanks for your input.

Software & Accessories / software for correcting distortion
« on: November 13, 2013, 10:07:08 AM »
My samyang 14mm is on its way.  I'm well aware that that there's massive complex distortion,  but based on nice review and excellent price I'm going to give it a try.

What software would you recommend to correct the distortion?  I've heard of PTlens so far. I have LR but I am under the impression that PTlens would do a better job. Does it really? I'd appreciate especially for those who use samyang 14 to share their experience in correcting distortion.  Many thanks.

Lenses / When discontinued, does lens price go up or down?
« on: November 05, 2013, 04:31:03 PM »
I'm trying to say goodbye to my 24-105 but I'm not willing to sell it at lower than purchase price.  We are know it's incredibly cheap now. If it's discontinued next year do you think the price would trend up a bit?  On the other hand I'm concerned more people will be interested in the sigma version or maybe canon 24-70 f4. What do you suggest I do?  Cut loose or wait? It's collecting dust now but I don't urgently need the money.
