EOS Bodies - For Stills / Which body to bring
« on: September 06, 2014, 09:41:04 PM »
I am leaving for a trip to orlando, fl tom and love photographing disney. I went during june and with the family rwlized my af was front focusing and ruined a lot of pics. Since then it jas been fixed. Just curious if I should bring the 1dx or 5d3 for this trip it will be hot and may rain. I may only get 3-4 hrs a day to shoot. Would the 1dx be overkill? Or shoukd I bring the 5d?

Hello all CR,

I have been using macbook pro's for my editing running windows. I have tried several laptops and while they are close in color gamut and contast. The Macbook whites look pure white. Is this just because its a cooler (k temp) screen or does all the others that are a bit more warm and slightly leaning toward yellow correct? Does anyone have a test they do when calibrating a laptop? The one I have settled on is the dell m3800 with the 3200 x 1800 screen. For $1500 it seemed like the best editing laptop for the money not including mac's.

I have been using macbook retina's for awhile strictly running windows since the screen covers the rgb gamut and is very accurate. I just bought a thinkpad w540 with the 3k display. It covers 97% so close enough but the pics just do not have that pop the had with the retina since the thinkpad has an antiglare coating. The pictures look flat and the mac makes the appear to have more saturatiin. Does anyone here edit with a matte coated screen thqt has worked with a macbook that could tell me your experience? I am afraid the macbook is the better screen but I never run osx.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Cps gave me a 1dx and falling in love
« on: May 17, 2014, 11:55:50 PM »
Just an awesome camera. Iso is a stop better. Being able to control iso, shutter and aperture values so it does not drop below them is awesome. The burst af is just amazing, caught more expressions that i feel I would normally miss since its so fast.

Do not like on/off switch, drive and a few buttons are different from 5d3 so just need to get used to it.
Meter is on right in VF and used to bottom.

But it hustles and feels like I have no excuse at this point with this beast. Also the colors seem a little nicer or its in my head.

Tomorrow I am going to use the 5d3 and compare raw files and hopefully I should now. Just so tempting.

On a canon 5d3 24-70 v2 82mm
Tripod will be used of course. Looking for high quality. Any suggestions from experienced users? Looking for 8-10 stops

I was shooting a 5k for family today. I fired test shots before my group was coming and all were good. When the time came I shot 1/250, f9, iso 400, eval meter, center zone, case 1, burst high. In dpp most of the shots are soft whent they should be sharper.
Camera 5d3
Canon 70-300L
Most were in the 2-300 range.
I am going on a trip in three weeks and am curious if this sounds like a user error or a lens issue?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Sell a spare 5d3 for 1dx?
« on: May 07, 2014, 10:58:15 PM »
I am considering getting the 1dx for manual exp comp, better tracking, cleaner iso images 3200-6400, more customizable features with the second mn function button.

I shoot portraits, indoor sports, nature and gettigpng into wildlife. I can sell my second body and get the 1dx, sigma 50mm art, 1.4 extender iii.

Or

Get 16-35 2.8 ( for landscapes, large groups)
More backdrops, lighting, etc
300mm f4 is
1.4 ext iii
St-e3
Canon 8-15 f4
Grip

I have a $6k budget and on the fence on the 1dx or more completing my lens lineup.
Just looking for options. Is the 1dx worth the reasons I mentioned?

Lenses / Bought the 300mm 2.8 ii and think its huge
« on: April 19, 2014, 05:40:25 PM »
I felt uncomfortable for the first time ever with this lens. Its awesome fast and sharp but wonder if the limited use will be worth tying up $7300. Any uses that would be helpful to try.

Lenses / General purpose zoom for family vacation of 12
« on: March 05, 2014, 10:56:15 PM »
I am only posting this because i am bringing my 5d3 and coild bring my 24-70 2.8 ii but have been considering the 24-70 f4l is since i can get one for about $860 and also considering the canon 24-105. For me the thought process was if i can shoot at a lower shutter speed on some of the indoor shots because of the iS then
I could use less flash output for faster recycle times and a lower iso. Also it would be smaller and lighter since some of the trip is a cruise. But when testing it seems that my 24-70 is drastically sharper. Amy i crazy? Has anyone here done a comparision with this? Basucally just trying to see if this lens will help or if I should stay with the 2.8. Ohh the trip is a disney cruise followed by 7 days in the parks.

I am trying to do a little studio work and have rented a black and a white backdrop. Both were ok. I am just curious if there are some generic must have colors to appeal to most types of shots. I looked at a cool background and floor but its eater themed and I don't know if thats too specific since I have none. Any suggestions?

I have been saving all the random video clips of the family over the years but now want to merge them by year with adobe premiere elements. I am just not sure how to save/export them to not lose quality by processing them into another compressed format. When I am done I want that to be the new master so I can remove the originals. Can someone give me some guidance on this?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / A little pick me up about the sony alpha 7
« on: December 06, 2013, 12:12:14 AM »
I just got the sony alpha 7 with kit lens. I was hoping to replace my wife's nex 6 with this since it will hold her 16-50 collapsable zoom and be a FF travel camera for me. Not the case so far.

Cons:
Iq worse with apsc e mount lenses
Auto-mode wife would use starts the shutter usually 2/focal length.
Phase detect is poor or does not come on during low light.
The two main dials sit in front and back of shutter release making this camera akward to hold.
The grip is tall but way too shallow.
Lack of speedlites and lens choices
Finally the awb and standard picture style make the reds look orange.

Sooooo I grabbed my 5d and all I can say is ergonimics and good glass make the weight and size worth it. Like anything other manufacturers will follow but this needs time to evolve. Now I see the light on Canon's choice for the Sl1 and 6d since they are smaller and lighter but are more functional. I do own a sony nex 6 but again the lens selection is low and as said many times on this forum good Glass is important than just a sensor alone. Just my 2 cents.
