Lenses / General purpose zoom for family vacation of 12
« on: March 05, 2014, 10:56:15 PM »
I am only posting this because i am bringing my 5d3 and coild bring my 24-70 2.8 ii but have been considering the 24-70 f4l is since i can get one for about $860 and also considering the canon 24-105. For me the thought process was if i can shoot at a lower shutter speed on some of the indoor shots because of the iS then
I could use less flash output for faster recycle times and a lower iso. Also it would be smaller and lighter since some of the trip is a cruise. But when testing it seems that my 24-70 is drastically sharper. Amy i crazy? Has anyone here done a comparision with this? Basucally just trying to see if this lens will help or if I should stay with the 2.8. Ohh the trip is a disney cruise followed by 7 days in the parks.

I am trying to do a little studio work and have rented a black and a white backdrop. Both were ok. I am just curious if there are some generic must have colors to appeal to most types of shots. I looked at a cool background and floor but its eater themed and I don't know if thats too specific since I have none. Any suggestions?

I am going on a cruise/land vacation to disney in june for 10 days. I am bringing the following and ma looking for a bag suggestion.

5d mk3
24-70 ii
35mm sigma 1.4
600 ex
Extra batteries and memory cards

I have a lowepro fastpack 350 but thats too much bag for this and want to travel lighter.

I have been saving all the random video clips of the family over the years but now want to merge them by year with adobe premiere elements. I am just not sure how to save/export them to not lose quality by processing them into another compressed format. When I am done I want that to be the new master so I can remove the originals. Can someone give me some guidance on this?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / A little pick me up about the sony alpha 7
« on: December 06, 2013, 12:12:14 AM »
I just got the sony alpha 7 with kit lens. I was hoping to replace my wife's nex 6 with this since it will hold her 16-50 collapsable zoom and be a FF travel camera for me. Not the case so far.

Iq worse with apsc e mount lenses
Auto-mode wife would use starts the shutter usually 2/focal length.
Phase detect is poor or does not come on during low light.
The two main dials sit in front and back of shutter release making this camera akward to hold.
The grip is tall but way too shallow.
Lack of speedlites and lens choices
Finally the awb and standard picture style make the reds look orange.

Sooooo I grabbed my 5d and all I can say is ergonimics and good glass make the weight and size worth it. Like anything other manufacturers will follow but this needs time to evolve. Now I see the light on Canon's choice for the Sl1 and 6d since they are smaller and lighter but are more functional. I do own a sony nex 6 but again the lens selection is low and as said many times on this forum good Glass is important than just a sensor alone. Just my 2 cents.

Software & Accessories / Looking for suggestions on which macbook pro.
« on: October 24, 2013, 11:09:39 PM »
I am looking to get either the 13" new haswell macbook pro or the 15".

I5 2.6ghz
8gb ram
512gb ssd
Intel iris 5100 graphics

I7 2.0ghz
8gb ram
256gb ssd
Intel iris pro 5200 graphics

I want to do pp work at home when its not convenient to use my workstation in the basement. I have the 15" early 2013 but want less heat, better battery life, better wireless, would like more storage but not sure if the 13" will be a huge downgrade for the additional storage. Any suggestions would be helpful. Finally there is the loaded on but costs $600 more and not sure thats the way to go since I generally upgrade yearly.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 2 5d3's or 1d x
« on: September 19, 2013, 11:30:42 PM »
I am getting my camera (5d3) replaced and have the opportunity to sell the replacement and get factory refurbed 1d x for $3900 or spend $1600 more to have 2 5d3's so I will have a backup. Just not sure if I should jump on the 1d x since I have lived this long with 1 body or get the 2 5d3's. My main want is stop better iso performance, customizable ae adjustments, more accurate metering. Just looking for people who have both to give some insight. I do like the smaller size, silent shutter, lower weight but want a tool thats best for the job. So far events and portraits are all I have done. Also landscapes and macro.

Lenses / Rare opportunity to get some nice L glass which would you pick
« on: September 11, 2013, 11:16:00 PM »
I have had some issues with my 5d and as a concession I can get some lenses I could use to fill my line up.

Here they are
24-105 $400
24-70 f4 is $400
100mm 2.8l $400
16-35 2.8 ii $800
85mm 1.2 ii $800
600ex $375
6d body $1100
5d3 $1500

all are canon refurbs. I only have $1650 to spend. I like portraits, travel and event photography. My current line up is in my sign. I was thinking 851.2, 24-70, 100mm but the 16-35 is tempting and the practical side says get the body but a new 6d is like $1700 so not much of a savings. Any suggestions?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / first paid gig need help
« on: July 19, 2013, 11:10:04 AM »
I am doing a friends birthday party of 4yr old twins. I am being paid and was told to get candids of games and group shots.

I was bringing the following and was curious if there are any suggestions, tips or lens/flash I should rent.

24-70 II
35mm Sigma 1.4
70-200 2.8II
600ex flash with stofen cap

I know that would cover it I assume but do not have anything longer than 35mm for shallow dof shots or just standard portraits. Also they want pictures of the cake and such. Just curious if there are any suggestions like the 100mm L macro, 50mm 1.2, 135mm f2. Those were lenses I was looking into anyway but do not want to buy just for this in a rush. I would rent one or none. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Or even tricks since I have a hard time balancing bounce flash for an even exposure. I know you here in the forum have said off camera flash but what do you do at a kids birthday party in a home without looking over the top?

Lenses / Favorite portrait lens for annual pictures of your our kids
« on: June 15, 2013, 11:43:06 AM »
I always take pics of the kids around their birthday. I have a frame that holds one from each year till age 18. They are turning six in two weeks and we will be at Disney. I have the 24-70 2.8 but have been torn on a prime for the shots since I will be down there I do not want to bring tons of lenses. I am stuck on either getting a 50mm 1.2L or the 85mm 1.8. I want it to double up as a lower light or dof isolation lens on the trip also since my 24-70 stops at 2.8. This will be used when I get back for portraits. Just torn on the 50mm vs. 85mm. I do like the background creamy and smooth but sometimes like the one I took last year had some kewl Disney balloons from their party that helped capture more of the scene and what they were into at the time. I have a friends 85mm and notice it's definitely not as sharp as my 24-70 to be expected and the CA is slightly annoying but can be fixed in post. Also I looked at the 100mm macro and 135mm f2 for portraits but unsure if that's too tight indoors or at some of the places we go since the kids are little we do not let them stray far. Sorry I just need to make a decision and would like any suggestions.

Software & Accessories / Where did you starting professionally?
« on: June 02, 2013, 03:51:25 PM »
I have been getting more and more people asking for pictures and copies of pictures from events I attend. Where did you start or do you have advice on where I can get a gallery going and be able to charge for photos, upload and give a password so the client could access them? I was looking at Smugmug or Zenfolio. Is there anything else I should do? I do not want to go overboard but I cannot keep taking free pictures for people then having to use skydrive to send them the pictures or give them discs. Also do I need to copyright my pictures? Just curious how to get my feet wet.

I would like to get feedback on some of my images for in camera and pp critisim both good and bad. Any suggestions?
