Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / Laptop Editing - Best Setup
« on: August 13, 2014, 06:28:58 PM »
Hi everyone!  With my crazy schedule, I typically purchase a very high-end laptop and edit using it (since I've gotta be mobile).  My current model is a powerful ASUS which is in their Republic of Gamers lineup.  I've forgotten the actual #, but it's only 1 year old as of now.  I have had no problems with the ability to handle my editing needs, and the monitor (sometimes bashed as the weak point of Asus and their laptop lineup) has been good for me once I purchased/used the Spyder Pro 4.

Here's my question:  I'm getting a new laptop soon, but the specs I'm looking at are the high-end gaming ones.  I guess my question is this:  Is it overkill?  Should I be looking at a particular linup of laptops which someone here's had good success with?  I like having the newest stuff, but I don't wanna buy a gaming system which I'll never game on.

Oh, and Photography only.  No video, or plans to go that direction.

Any thoughts?  Thanks in advance.

Lenses / Brenizer Method Photos/Tips
« on: July 26, 2014, 02:23:15 PM »
Hi everyone, I've only recently begun shooting with this method, and I'm totally LOVING the results I'm getting!

I'm wondering, however:  I shoot using my 135L on a 5DM3.  Does anyone here use the 85mm?  I've noticed that with the 135, I'm shooting probably more photos than I need to, but that's because I'm scared I'm going to miss an area (those of you who shoot these photos know what I'm referring to).

Should I get an 85L just for this type of shot?  I actually don't have one, but I'd love to have one.  Maybe this is the catalyst to push me into that camp.

I've also tried it with my 70-200mm 2.8L m2 at approximately 85mm, but I'm more nervous because of the zoom ring.

Thoughts?  Also, if you have good Brenizer Method photos, please share!

EOS Bodies / Any New Bodies in Sochi?
« on: February 16, 2014, 07:51:43 AM »
I've been watching the Olympics and in years past, I've occasionally noticed photographers carrying interesting (and new) gear which ends up on store shelves shortly thereafter.

I was wondering if anyone had noticed a possible 7DM2 or other bodies they didn't recognize during any of the coverage viewed.  Anyone see anything?

Lenses / Which Lens for Ring Photos?
« on: December 31, 2013, 01:11:28 PM »
I'm a Wedding Photographer who's used other lenses to photograph rings and then cropped them with good results.  However,  I think it's time to grab the 100mm f2.8 for this job.  What would you all suggest?  The 2.8L or is the non-L good enough?  Does the L version justify the doubled price?  Any other macro lens recommendations?  I don't do any other macro photography other than my ring photos, so I'd love ideas.

Thank You in advance!

My current lineup:

5DM3
50mm 1.4
12-24mm
24-105mm f4 (great lens, but not sure why I still have it)
24-70mm mk2
70-200mm f2.8 mk2
135mm f2L

EOS Bodies / "Two New FF Bodies in 2014" - if 5DM4, would you jump in?
« on: November 29, 2013, 03:09:35 PM »
I know that if they actually rolled out the 5DM4, I'd be very interested in it.  However, if you own a 5DM3 and have realized how amazing this camera truly is, what would it take to make you grab one immediately?

I'm so happy with my 5DM3 that I truly can't wrap my brain around what they'd have to put into a mark IV to make a guy like me jump in.

Thoughts?

Lenses / Looking for a EF 135mm f2L USM...
« on: November 02, 2013, 03:02:45 PM »
I've been scouring the internet today looking for a decent deal on this great lens.  Do any of you have any leads which you'd be willing to share?  Nothing at Canon (refurbished).

I'd like to get a lightly used one.  Have about $830 to spend.

I need one for this weekend (two weddings).  I've been looking for a rental, but I'm surprised that I can't find a lens around!  Online rental services are going to run, with shipping, around 80 dollars.  Maybe I should just buy one!?

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / PocketWizard, Yongnuo, or Phottix?
« on: October 22, 2013, 12:19:20 AM »
My cheap-o transmitter (which I paid about 20 bucks for) failed at a really important portion of a bridal shoot last night.  Time To Upgrade!

What do you guys use/suggest/endorse?  Why?

Thanks in advance!  I value everyone's opinions here at CR forums pretty highly (...maybe a mistake..?)

EOS Bodies / 70D AutoFocus. Any experience?
« on: October 15, 2013, 01:39:12 PM »
I found this video showing the live AF on the 70D.  It looks remarkably good, considering the nature of the video and need for good, accurate, quick focus!  I was wondering how many others have had positive experiences with this camera.

...I don't own one (I have a 5DM3), but I watch it with great interest just because of the new sensor and focus system.  I'm anxious to see what it might do in the FF format.

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / Online Storage/Cloud - What's Good?
« on: September 06, 2013, 07:35:58 PM »
I've been kicking around the idea of using the many online storage or cloud options.  I've noticed that some are for ALL kinds of files, but being a photographer, is there one which you all use that works well for us photographers?  The idea of being able to show clients files anywhere/any time is very appealing.  However, all the services probably aren't created equal.  I'd want to be able to back up RAW/TIFF/JPEGS, etc.  Videos not as important.

What do you use?  What do you like about it?

Thanks in advance...

Lenses / Is This the New Sigma 24-70 f2.0? 2014 Can't Come Fast Enough!
« on: August 05, 2013, 12:22:31 PM »
I stumbled across this photo posted by CanonWatch.  What do you all think?  Does it look legit?  I don't know much about Sigma other than they're completely changing the lens game and I'll probably pounce on this lens like a fat kid on a cupcake!   ;)

EOS Bodies / 7DM2 as a FF? Hmmm...
« on: July 22, 2013, 01:07:04 PM »
What do you guys think of this rumor?  I'd only heard rumors before, but thought I'd throw it out into the CR forums to see what you guys all think.  Up until now, 7D has been thought of as the flagship for crop sensors.  However, is the 70D the new flag-bearer with big changes to come in the FF lineup?

Here's a link to the CanonWatch site where it's discussed:

Lenses / 85L or 135L?
« on: July 16, 2013, 11:24:44 PM »
Alright everyone, I shoot portraits and weddings and here are my current lenses which I use on my 5DM3:

24-105 (great kit lens, but I might sell it)
24-70 f2.8 MK2
50 f1.4
(Sigma) 12-24 - some people don't like this, but I think I got a good copy
70-200 f2.8 MK2

I'm trying to find a reason to buy either the 85mm or 135mm.  Which should I buy?  I know I have that length covered, but they're such celebrated primes that I'd just learn to zoom with my feet more and I know my results would be good.

So, here's my question.  Both are very well-loved in the photog world, especially with portrait shooters.  Which should I get?  Or, should I be considering another prime altogether?

Thanks in advance!

I shoot lots of weddings and events and I've been rocking two cameras.  However, with FF bodies, flashes and the massive lenses, I'd like to hear recommendations and ideas to hold the two cameras at once in the best/most secure way possible.  I'm a little leery about the plate attachment idea that most of the dual strap options have, so if you have battle stories, I'd really appreciate hearing.

I've noticed that using two straps, with one camera off to the side so it doesn't collide with my primary camera, if I grab for the secondary one, I've got to re-arrange straps just to make the viewfinder reach my eye.  Ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Oh, and here's the one I was looking at:

Lenses / If You Could Have One 1 Lens...
« on: June 23, 2013, 09:27:17 PM »
Alright everybody, here's the hard question.  Someone's gonna ask it!   :)

You can only pick 1 lens for the rest of your life from today's current lineup.  What do you do?

Take some time and think about your answer for

1.  A Crop Sensor camera

2.  A Full-Frame camera

Also, let us know what you normally shoot (weddings, landscapes, macro, etc.)

I'll start it off:

(I shoot Weddings and Events, primarily)

1.  EF-S 17-55mm f2.8

2.  EF 70-200mm f2.8 II (amazing lens)
