Lenses / Upgrade 300 F4 IS with 300 f2.8 IS
« on: July 05, 2012, 07:51:53 AM »
With the new 300 F2.8 IS II available, there are a large number of used 300 f2.8 IS available for sale.

I have had my 300 F4 IS for about 4 months and have been very pleased with the results; speed, sharpness, color rendition, etc. However, what I read about the f2.8 IS says it is even better (best).

Is this a no brainer to spend the $3000-$3500 on the f2.8 IS to get superior results than the f4 IS?

Lenses / Swap 16-35 f2.8 II for 24 f1.4 II on 5D3
« on: June 26, 2012, 08:39:59 PM »
I am considering Swapping my 16-35 f2.8 II for a 24 f1.4 II.

When I had my 40D, the 16-35 was on my camera most of the time. The 24-55 effective focal length suited many situations very well. Since getting the 5D3, I have rarely used it and when I have, it has only occasionally been used wider than 24mm.

The lenses I use most with the 5D3 is my 135 f2 and my 50 f1.2; my 300 f4 has been wonderful for the kids lacrosse.

So, as I am looking to add another prime to my kit, i am curious to hear from those who have used both the 16-35 f2.8 and the 24 f1.4 II can comment on their experience.

Lenses / 300 f4 w/1.4x or 400 f5.6
« on: May 19, 2012, 09:48:35 PM »
Looking to increase my reach occasionally.

Will adding the 1.4x III to my 300 f4 yield as good (or better) results as the 400 f5.6. Or would the better choice be adding the 400 to my arsenal?

Any feedback based on hands on experience/results is appreciated.

Lenses / Canon 70-200 2.8 MkI vs MkII
« on: April 30, 2012, 01:06:24 PM »
The recent rebate has me thinking I should take this opportunity to sell my 6 year old MkI 70-200 2.8 and get the new MkII. Recent online sales show a range of $1450-$1600 for a used MkI, that would put me at between $750-$900 out of pocket for the MkII.
Having recently picked up a 5DIII, I have been considering adding the 135 f2 (keeping the 70-200 MkI) but in many of the hands on reviews of the MkII have indicated that those with the 135 f2 use it much less often since getting the 70-200 MkII.
Does the MkII offer such better performance and quality over the MkI to warrant the $1000 investment?
