Sports / 2014 High School Sports
« on: August 31, 2014, 05:24:53 PM »
Its that time of year when High School sports here in the U.S. really start to get busy.  Here are a few pics from a football game last night.  All shot with a 5d Mk III and 70-200 f/2.8L II.

Sports / Dirt car racing
« on: August 12, 2014, 06:13:47 PM »
Last weekend I was at the Knoxville (IA) Nationals 410 Sprint Car races.  Four days of the best sprint cars in the world after the $150,000 to the overall winner.  1200 pound cars with 900hp on a 1/2 mile dirt track with average lap speeds of approximately 125mph.  These were shots from the infield during time trials.  The air was so humid that it was creating contrails from the wings of the cars when they were at top speed which you can see in some of these shots.  All of these were shot with my 135mm f/2 on a 5d MkIII.  ISO was 3200-6400, apertures f/2-2.8, and shutter speeds were 500-640.

Photography Technique / Myrtle Beach, SC
« on: June 28, 2014, 03:41:29 PM »
Since there has been a few travel questions of late, I thought I would throw mine in there.  I'm headed to Myrtle Beach, SC in a couple weeks.  Suggestions on photo opportunities in the area that I should not miss?  I like shooting landscape, macro, and wildlife. Thanks.

Technical Support / Lightboxes, umbrellas, stands, etc.........
« on: March 03, 2014, 05:37:31 PM »
I haven't done much flash photography at all and this is the year I've decided to delve into it.  I recently acquired 3-600EX-RT flashes and the ST-E3-RT transmitter.  I've been playing around with them and will be taking a Canon Sponsored class on their use in my area in May.  The thing I need now is flash stands, umbrellas and/or light boxes, etc. to use with them.  I plan to use my flashes primarily for fill for indoor and outdoor portraits.  I will also use them to add light to macro shots that I take, indoor and outdoor as well.  I have no idea where to begin with the purchase of the aforementioned items.  Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks

Lenses / Big whites
« on: November 14, 2013, 07:02:20 PM »
Why doesn't Canon ever offer rebates on the big whites as they do other lenses? There is most likely as much if not more of a profit margin in them making it very feasible to do. I guess it may be because they figure if you can afford that much, a $500 or more rebate won't stop you from buying it? I've often wondered about this because I don't think I've ever seen rebates on big whites.

5D MK III Sample Images / NHRA
« on: September 27, 2013, 10:45:48 PM »
I'm at an NHRA event for the very first time.  Rather challenging.  The car in this pic was probably doing 250+ mph when it passed me as it accelerated to around 312 within a couple hundred more yards.  Tough to pan and get tack sharp images, especially after dark.  Shot with a 5d Mk3, 70-200 2.8L II, 70mm, ISO 10,000, 1/1250 sec, f4.5. I normally shoot RAW, but I forgot that I had shot some images in JPEG yesterday and forgot to set it back to RAW. this image was straight from the camera with minor cropping.

Software & Accessories / Cam Ranger
« on: June 20, 2013, 10:06:15 PM »
I am seriously considering the purchase of a CamRanger with the primary purpose for macro photography so I'm not crawling around on the ground so much (tough to do with rhuematoid arthritis sometimes). For those of you that have a CamRanger and have used it for macro shots, give me your thoughts on it (pros and cons).  My secondary use would be for some time lapse shots ( up to as many as 500 or so) using the intervalometer.  I've read some comments regarding a short battery life for time lapse work.   I'm having a tough time pulling the trigger for $300 unless its real worth it.

5D MK III Sample Images / Aerial photos, balloons, planes, and others
« on: February 15, 2013, 05:10:42 PM »
Had not seen a topic with a subject such as this so I thought I would start one with a couple of images I snapped today.  These are two pics of a USAF A-10 "Warthog" as it was doing practice bombing and strafing runs on ground targets.  I only had a few minutes to snap shots (it was very cold and windy and I wasn't at all dressed for it) and I'm looking forward to going back at some point in the future to shoot some more.

Software & Accessories / CamRanger?

Has anyone used one of these, and if so, what to you think of it?  You can view a short video of its use on their website, camranger.com

Landscape / Holiday Landscapes
« on: December 22, 2012, 11:32:09 PM »
I saw a post started for "Holiday" portraits.  Surely there has to be some outdoor holiday light pictures out there that have been taken.  I'll get it started with a picture from Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO.

Lenses / "Big White" lens choice
« on: December 20, 2012, 09:08:06 AM »
Sometime this summer I will be making a substantial purchase for a big white. I will be using it for field sports, football; soccer, and bird/wildlife photography. I am looking at 2 options:

500mm f/4L II

400mm f/2.8L II + Extender 1.4x III

What would you choose and why?

Street & City / Pictures in DC
« on: November 22, 2012, 05:57:44 PM »
Leaving for Washington, DC for two weeks, never been there before Most of my photo opportunities will be at night. I'll be taking a 5d III, 24-105, 135, and a 70-200 2.8 II. Plus tripod, remote release, no flash. Any suggestions for good spots to shoot on the National Mall or any other areas?  Thanks

5D MK III Sample Images / 5d Mk III - outdoor night time sports
« on: October 21, 2012, 04:00:56 AM »
Here are a couple shots taken last night at a local high school football game. My first attempt at a night game with my Mark III.  Both shots were taken using a 70-200 f/2.8 II lens.  Both were shot at 200mm @ f/2.8 and the shutter speed was 1/500 sec.  The ISO was set to auto and the leaping interception was at ISO 2000, the pass by the quarterback at ISO 4000.

Lenses / 85mm lens
« on: October 10, 2012, 06:12:22 PM »
I am looking at Canon's 85mm f/1.2L and the 85mm f/1.8.  I am amazed at the difference in price between these two lens as I read great reviews for both.  I am planning to buy one of the two, mainly to be used for indoor sports, i.e. basketball, volleyball, hockey, etc. mated to a 5d Mark III.  I currently use a 70-200 f/2.8L II for this, but I would like a tad more speed (so I can reduce the ISO and noise) and bokeh in my images.  Most shots are taken between about 90-140mm.  I can get closer to the court if need be.   I read an article a few months ago (can't find it now) in which the reviewer felt that the 1.2 version did not focus as quickly as the 1.8 which made it worse for indoor sports.  This was an eye opener to me and couldn't believe that a $400 lens would focus faster than a $2,000 lens. Does anyone out there have experience with one or both of these lens?  If so, can you give me some input on how you feel it would do for what I plan to use it for.  Thanks in advance.
