Landscape / Shooting comet Ison and picking a body
« on: November 18, 2013, 08:18:47 PM »
I plan on heading out one of these early mornings to shoot comet Ison. And I'm looking for some opinions or experience. I've got a 6D and a 60D. The 6 has way better high ISO, but the 60 has a finer pixel pitch. Which do you suppose would be better for shooting the comet?

Lenses / Also chasing Tack Sharp
« on: March 25, 2013, 10:14:29 PM »
This is similar to another thread about sharpness, but what I'm looking for is a lens that is sharp wide open.  I have the 50/1.4 and 50/1.8 Mk1 and while they sharpen up nicely at about f4 or 5.6, they leave much to be desired wide open.

Here's what I'm looking for:

Wide aperture (prefer 1.4, but 1.8 would work. Maybe f2.)
Sharp wide open.
Approximately normal length.  Something from about 30mm-85mm, 30 would be better than 85.
Autofocus (so Zeiss and Samyang are out)

Any suggestions?  I'm seriously considering the Sigma 35/1.4, but I'm seeing conflicting reports of exactly how much better it is than others, and how it compares to other focal lengths.  Can I get sharper with a different length?

I currently shoot on a crop body, but may move to FF on one body.  I do not need weather sealing.  IS would be nice, but not essential.  Sharpness is more important than price, but price will be a factor.

EOS Bodies / My totally scientific announcement date prediction.
« on: June 22, 2011, 08:55:19 PM »
Just for fun, I went back through the camera listings on DPReview and based on past new body announcement dates, here's what I predict for the next announcements:

650D 5/6/2012
70D   2/24/2012
5D3   10/14/2011
1D5   10/26/2011
1Ds4 1/31/2010  (obviously way overdue)

I have no guess on a 7D2 because it's the only model in that line.

My methodology: I took the average number of days between announcements for a given line and added that number to the last announcement date.

For what it's worth, there have been zero announcements in months 4, 5, 6, 7, 11 and 12.  Other months as follows:

January, 2
February, 6
March, 1
August, 9
September, 5
October, 1

So August is usually the month to watch, probably between the 19th & 26th, then September sometime.

I didn't include the 1xxx line, or the D30 and D60.

Not that I really care, I'm not looking to upgrade anytime soon.  I love my 60D.

EOS Bodies / 60D Battery Grip?

Any rumblings on availability of the 60D battery grip?  What's the usual lag between camera release and battery grip availability?
