Lighting / should I get a second 600 flash or get the St-e3?
« on: May 25, 2013, 02:40:16 PM »
Hello,

I have had the 5d3 for about 6 months and love it.  I just recently upgraded to the 600 flash, mainly to have more flash coverage when using my 17-40l lens (because the 600 flash goes down to 20mm, the 430 ex ii only went down to 24mm.)

When I had my 60d I loved the wireless flash transmitter that was built in.  I used it all the time with my 430 ex ii mounted with an umbrella diffuser.

So now I would like to wirelessly mount my 600 off camera and use it with my 5d3.  I am torn between getting an extra 600 flash to act as the master and have the second 600 off camera or if I should just get the st-e3 and use that to trigger my existing  600.

I hear that the st-e3 does not have af assist and that may be a factor in low light situations.  I would mainly be using these for baby and toddler pictures in door so it won't be dark - but it also won't have lots of daylight either --- thus the need for flash!

Any suggestions?  Sorry if this issue has been explored before...

Lenses / The IS of Canon 70-300l
« on: December 27, 2012, 07:30:11 PM »
Was going to get the 17-40mm for $699 at BH for myself for Xmas but am stumped now that Adorama has the 70-300l is for $1099.  I could probably get $350 for my non-l 70-300is on ebay so the lenses would in essence cost the same amount.

question about the description of the 70-300l - note below in red

Designed to deliver ultra-high quality images along with lightning fast operation, the new Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS USM telephoto zoom lens brings a favorite zoom range to the celebrated Canon L-series of lenses.

It features two Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) elements for improved image quality and reduced chromatic aberration, incorporates a floating focusing mechanism for sharpness from close up to infinity, plus an IS system that increases usability by approximately four stops.

The EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS USM features a function that prevents erroneous operation when the lens is mounted on a tripod or monopod. Gleaming white, with an optional removable tripod collar, dust and water resistant construction, and a newly developed Fluorine coating that keeps soiling, smears and fingerprints to a minimum, its phenomenal performance and flexibility is assured.
---------------------------------------------

what does that mean?  it auto detects when the 70-300l is on a monopod.  I use my 100-400 on a monopod and keep the IS on all the time?  does this have anything to do with the 70-300 not having a tripod collar?  sorry if this has been discussed before, I haven't had time to look at past postings about this lens and have to order by Jan 5.

Bought a lens last week from B+H and now it is $100 less than what I paid for it on their site.  It's not even here yet.  If I contact B+H, are they good about issuing a gift certificate or store credit for the $100 difference?  (i bought it with a B+H gift certificate). Or do I have to do a RMA and physically send the item back?  Thanks in advance, looking for some guidance before I call tomorrow.

Lenses / 50mm macro vs. 60mm macro on aps-c body
« on: December 09, 2012, 05:49:16 PM »
Hello I have the 60mm macro and will likely be upgrading to the 6d or 5diii in the next few weeks.  I really like the 60mm macro but obviously vant use it with the 5d3.  However I do have a t3i for work stuff and do use macro frequently.

So, I am trying to decide if I should I sell the 60mm and get the 50mm macro so I can use it on both the t3i and 5diii....or is the 60mm macro so much better than the 50mm on an aps-c body that I should keep it?

I eventually want the 100mm f2.8 l macro with is but that is about a year away...

Thanks!

Lenses / slim filters necessary for wide angle 17-40? and 24-105 lenses?
« on: December 04, 2012, 10:55:19 AM »
Hello, I may be obtaining these 2 lenses in the next few weeks and had a question about if I need a slim filter for the 17-40 and/or the 24-105.  I prefer B+W filters and have them on most of my lenses.   I presume I need the B+W slim UV filter as an everyday protector for the 17-40?
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/132948-REG/B_W_65_026901_77mm_Ultraviolet_UV_Filter.html

I'd also probably get the slim cpl

With the 17-40, would I be able to stack the slim cpl on top of the slim uv filter or would I need to remove the uv filter?  just curious.

And is a regular filter on the 24-105 ok?  such as this one?

Thanks in advance!

EOS Bodies / Why are flash sync shutter speeds getting worse?
« on: September 24, 2012, 09:21:05 AM »
As a 60d shooter was looking forward to the 6d entry level ff I was hugely disappointed by just the additional 2 af points and 1/180th fash sync.   Came across this good comparison page regarding flash syncs

http://www.photographe-mariages.net/blog/20120404/vitesse-de-synchronisation-par-appareil-photo/

Why do the 60d, 50d, and 7d have a faster flash sync than the 5d mark ii and iii and the 6d?????

I'm holding off to see how the 7d mark ii shakes out now.  the 6d doesn't impress me and the 5d mark iii is too much.

I am fairly new to Canon Rumors but wanted some guidance from those shooters who upgraded from APS-C to Full Frame and what full frame macro lens they went with if they were shooting with the 60mm APS-C macro.  I have the 60d and used the 60mm macro for closeups the last 18 months.  The type of closeups I shot with the 60mm are babies feet, flowers, engagement rings/wedding ring type shots, and documents.

I plan to upgrade from the 60d to the 6d (or whatever the entry level full frame is called when it comes out) so I'll likely be getting rid of the 60mm since it's an ef-s.   I know the 100mm 2.8 is l macro would be best lens to go with on the full frame and that I've basically been shooting with a 100mm since the 60mm x 1.6 is 96mm equivalent.  However, I think I'll get the 17-40l (one of the reasons I am upgrading to ff is to get true wide angle / noncropped wide angle shots) first so the 100mm l isnt in my budget.  Therefore I'm considering the 50mm f2.5 macro (mainly because of it's great price of $279) or regular 100mm macro.

Questions:

1.) I've seen a few reviews that mention that the af on the 50mm macro is noisy...but is it so noisy/loud that it would disturb a quiet baby?

2.) What has been the experience of shooters using the 50mm on a APS-C body (just in case I end up keeping the 60d)?  On an APS-C the 50mm could serve as an 80mm equivalent when needed.

3.) What full frame macro lens did you select for full frame when upgrading from APS-C to full frame and why?

4.) If you have both the 50mm macro and 100mm macro do you find that you use them equally and for what kinds of shooting?  (I'm thinking that the only shot I would use the 50mm macro for is documents).

Thanks!
