Lenses / How about a new 28-135mm?
« on: April 29, 2013, 04:54:57 PM »
With all this talk of new lenses...  How about a new 28-135mm?  I use this lens ALL THE TIME for events and walking about.  It's nice that I can get some nice landcape shots and still use it for some close-ups of various people and items.

The 24-105mm f4 L is really nice, but it doesn't have enough reach and it's f4...  f2.8 would have to be the absolute minimum...

For retail of $400, the 28-135mm is a REALLY nice lens.  While maybe not the sharpest, certainly versatile and good image characteristics.  Canon, how about dropping the 24-105, beefing up the 28-135 and putting some L glass in there with a f2.8-4?

EOS Bodies / 1DX - The Workhorse?
« on: January 27, 2013, 08:54:26 PM »
So I was reading the rumor on Canon's roadmap for 2013 and got me to thinking...  Is the 1DX really Canon's workhorse?

I'm a beginning fashion and beauty photographer that is working to get bigger and higher profile jobs.  I currently have a 5D Mark II which has served me quite well for many things in this arena.  However it's not as great an all-arounder that I would like for my non-fashion jobs which helps circulate my name and get me some additional income.

The 5D Mark III is a great camera.  But the lack of a user-replaceable focus-screen and no pro body is a downside.  It's fast enough and the AF is more than adequate.  But not sure if it's something I would be happy with for 4 or more years.  Which is what I expect from a pro camera.

The 1DX is what I want except that it doesn't have the higher MP of the 5D series.  Well, I was a little disappointed when it didn't have built-in WiFi...  But overall, it's pretty darn nice.  The way I look at it, as long as I have the appropriate lens, it can pretty much handle anything I throw at it.  Which would allow me to take more jobs that I know technical limitations won't be an issue.

However, I'm a little concerned about the 18MP.  For publication in large format magazines, I think 18MP would still be fine.  For fashion and beauty, is there a big advantage to go with 22MP?  The only step-up I see would be Medium Format which I don't see a need for at least a couple of years.  How much of an advantage would that be over a 1DX/5D3 in the fashion/beauty markets?

Third Party Manufacturers / New Zeiss 55mm Lens
« on: September 11, 2012, 02:03:00 AM »
Isn't anyone jazzed about this? Everyone is talking about the 135mm just announced. The 50mm has been the middle-child to the 35mm & 85mm.  The 50mm is a perfect focal length for me for many reasons, but There is a visual difference. Maybe the new 55mm will surpass it's two brothers...

EOS Bodies - For Stills / No more Katzeye for Canon 5D Mark II?
« on: August 01, 2012, 08:08:04 PM »
I will be pulling the trigger on a new Canon 5D Mark II on Friday and thought I would at least order the focusing screen optimized for fast lenses...  Went onto Katzeye and can't find their screens for the 5D Mark II.  Nada.  Nothing.  I sent an eMail to them for info...  Strange since they still offer view screens for the 10D and Rebels...

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Canon 5D MKII. Refurb or New?
« on: July 31, 2012, 03:43:55 AM »
Any long-term refurb users here? I am getting the 5D2 and wondering if going NEW is worthwhile.  There is a longer warranty, but I heard REFURB actually has more stringent quality controls.

It's not too early to think about it!  ;D

What kind of discounts could we see for the 1DX for the Holiday season?
