Has anyone had experience with CF-SD adapter card like these?

Is it intended for in-camera use, or for interfacing between CF card reader and computer?

If usable in camera, could be less expensive way to have higher capacity cards in cameras that use CF cards.

Is there a loss of write speed if used in camera with CF card?   What may be some of the other pitfalls?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Storing HDR Settings in Custom Shooting Mode (C1,C2,C3) for 5D MkIII

For my 5D MkIII, I've tried to create camera settings for HDR mode and store them in the Custom Shooting Mode (C1, C2, C3).   It appears that Custom Shooting Mode is greyed out (cannot be selected).  Could not find anything in user's guide that addresses this.

By contrast, settings for the very similar AEB shooting mode can be stored in C1, C2, or C3. 

Has anyone tried storing HDR settings in 5D MkIII?  Were you successful? How?

If this option is not allowed, why might that be?  Could firmware be changed to allow this?

5D MK III Sample Images / Japanese Maple at Night in Available Light

Took on tripod with 5D3 + 100 f/2.8L macro in available light - lit by a small ground spotlight below the leaves. 

Shot manually at ISO 400, f/7.1 at 1.0 sec.   

My first attempt at this and want to try more available (night) light shots of these leaves.

Any ideas?

Lens Gallery / Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM

Pictures of Shuttle Endeavor on 9/21/2012 as it takes its victory lap over Los Angeles before final landing at LAX to begin grooming for a permanent place in the California Science Center.  These shots were taken as the shuttle flew over NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab near Pasadena. Exciting sight as it flew overhead at 1500 ft! 

Pictures taken with Canon 7D + Canon EF 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM.  Shuttle#1 is uncropped, taken at 300mm (480mm crop) at 1/400 sec, f/8, ISO 100.  Shuttle#2 is cropped, with same exposure, except shutter speed was 1/640 sec.   Both images shot in RAW using AI Servo and high-burst option.

Lenses / Just got new 17-40 f/4L packed with "EF lens" CD

Just got my new 17-40 f/4L lens to add wide angle capability for my 5D3.  Now I can go wider than the 24-105 f/4L kit lens.  Looking forward to running AF MA tests to see how it performs. 

A first for me: the 17-40 was packed with a "EF lens" CD that has PDFs of user's guides for all Canon EF lenses.  Saves Canon from publishing handy booklet size guide that can be easily stashed in my camera bag.  Lens User Guides don't always have much in-depth info, except for speciality lens, like macro, tilt, etc.  With PDF substitute, not as convenient as booklet size I've gotten with my previous lens purchases.  Another cost-savings move by Canon.

5D MK III Sample Images / Navy's Blue Angels at MCAS Cherry Point, NC - May 6, 2012

Four images of Navy's Blue Angels taken with Canon 5D Mark III and 24-105 f/4L.  Each image shot at 105 mm with the same exposure settings:  ISO 800, f/8, 1/3200 sec.  Really enjoyed the Airshow and satisfied with results even though limited by 105 mm max focal length.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Is the 5D3 compatible with STM lenses (e.g., new 40mm f/2.8)

My understanding is that STM lenses offer quieter focusing for video and the new T4i is apparently compatible with STM lenses for this purpose.  Is this also true for the 5D3?  The 5D3 user's manual makes no mention of STM.  If 5D3 not compatible, can firmware update make it compatible?

Software & Accessories / Quick release camera strap for Canon 7D and/or 5D MkIII

Looking for a quality quick release camera strap that attaches to camera body like the Canon stock strap does.  That is, with a fabric connection to the camera NOT a metal connector that will soon rub the finish off the camera body.   

Thanks for any suggestions?  Please provide brand and model number if possible.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Lens micro-adjust for 5D3

I've downloaded and am reading the user manual while waiting for my 5D3 to arrive.  The AF microadjustment described on p. 104-109 has new capability (to me) that allows for separate calibration at each focal length extreme of a zoom lens. The manual calls these settings W (wide) and T (telephoto).  Once these settings are stored in the camera for a specific lens the adjustments for other focal lengths are automatically scaled by the camera based on the W and T settings.

I previously have attempted calibrating my EF-S 17-85 zoom with my 7D using the LensAlign MkII tool.  The 7D allows for a single microadjustment - obviously a limiting choice for zoom lens.  Seemed like a capability only for prime lenses.

The W and T settings may have been in 1D models for quite some time, or it could be new to the 5D3, and likely the 1D X too.

Does anyone have any experience with the W and T capability and can comment on its effectiveness?

Software & Accessories / What raincover solution do you use?

Going to Michigan next month to shoot the fall color and want to be prepared for rainy conditions. Need a raincover for my 7D + tripod that is effective, easy to use, and reasonably priced.  Have used trash bags in the past but find them a bit awkward.   Any suggestions?

Software & Accessories / corrupt file name provided by my 7D

I have always formatted my CF card with the 7D.  The standard RAW file name has been IMG.xxxx.CR2.

Suddenly I now get _MG.xxxx.CR2.  The file itself is OK, just the name that is automatically written has somehow been corrupted to  _MG.xxxx.CR2.
 
I have been numbering my files continous via the 7D menu.   Thought of resetting the numbering to zero, but would rather not, if it's not necesary to fix this issue.

Any ideas of how file name got corrupted, and how to get rid it?

Software & Accessories / A puzzling experience with LP-E6 batteries for 5D and 7D

I recently had a curious experience with one of my LP-E6 batteries....

I have four LP-E6 batteries for my 7D.  All appear to be genuine Canon batteries - not counterfeit.  I have numbered them 1 to 4 and have them registered in my 7D.  I rotate them regularly and keep them charged using the Canon LC-E6 charger.

One day battery #2 would not accept a charge and was dead as a doornail when I put it in the 7D - could not operate the camera at all with this battery.

I put the battery aside convinced it was gone forever.   In spite of this, a couple weeks later I put battery #2 back in the 7D and saw a small trickle of life in it.   I then succeeded in charging the battery.  The 7D said it was 95% charged but had some degraded performance -- meaning only two of the three green bars were lit.

Batteries #1, #3, and #4 continue to work fine, so I am comfortable that my charger is working properly.

I accept that battery #2 may nearing it's useful life.
 
Or am I missing something?    Any advice on special battery care that I may not be doing?

Lenses / What is significance of gold or silver markings on EF-S lenses?

What is significance of gold versus silver rings on EF-S lens barrel?   

The new EF-S 55-250 lens appears to have silver ring (if it is a color photo).  The older 17-85 has gold, the newer 15-85 has silver, while the 10-22 has gold.  There seems to be a random mixture - or is it really random?

Does this have a meaning - like the red ring is for L lenses, and the green ring for DO lenses?
